  • This is atleast a once a week post on here, so yeah it happens alot

And its bullshit everytime. Id have chewed him out about if you have employees that price stuff that wrong then why the hell price stuff at all in your store and just look everything up. Id have called him a penny pinching greedy piece of shit and told him Id tell everyone not to go there.

Then Id plan my own game store and put him out of business.
  • The situation with the OP experience is a sad but not too uncommon reality of the retro scene. It happens not only in retro shops, but we need to acknowledge the practice exists online with dodgy eBay sellers etc.

As collectors , we all want good deals. On the flipside, so do the resellers. And on either sides, there will always be the good eggs and the bad eggs. The bottom line then, is to avoid the bad egg sellers and don't waste much further time on them.
  • Shit, there's two shops here that don't even price games. They look them up as you ask. Horrible experience.

I went to a convention where a dealer didnt price their games so he had to check them on a laptop every time I found something interesting.  After getting two high quotes and them not check condition (I.E.  dented missing manual etc) I asked why they kept the prices in a spreadsheet.  He said he was checking each on eBay then sorting by highest first and averaging the top 5 together.  I instantly left that booth.
  • The place by me has had a lot of trouble pricing games lately. The other day they had a Castlevania III CIB in pretty good condition for $50 or $60 and then a cart only copy of Link's Awakening next to it for $75. They often get burned pretty hard with overcharging for games.

I was I Baton Rouge, LA a few months ago and experienced this. Thousands of retro games and no price tags. I was kinda confused and asked: "are these priced individually?" He says: "ya, bring me what you want and I'll get you a price." I immediately left...

That stuff blows my mind, especially at a convention.

There was a store here that did it too, but at least he would knock some off the completed prices he found.   And he would just sell sports games for a buck (until one of his employees looked up NHL 94 before he could speak up and stumbled on my $14.99 completed sales)

Well one time I went to trade in about 25 ps2 games. The owner checked out the prices online, put a small price sticker on it which puzzled me, but he was having a conversation on the phone. He then offered a ridiculous low ball amount for the trade in after seeing his prices on each game which was higher than eBay prices. I asked for more on the trade in he said that was the nest he could do. I told him I will keep the games and he got upset because he had already priced the games and I told him to remove his stickers. I have not been back to that store.

What convention? We're all in Ohio. Wondering if it was at CORGS or TORG Summit?

  • I have kind of balanced out the good with the bad around here where I live..... I absolutely will not go to GameStop for anything, so I don't have to bother myself with all that drama. Most places are out of their minds on the retro gaming stuff with prices these days so I don't bother. I found one little gaming store that has some good games from time to time and the prices are fair or they will even give you some wiggle room to pay under what eBay asks. Retro gaming is just a big wave it goes up and down.....
  • The local guy who got busted for burning down his store used to do this too. If he was stoned you could get a good price but if he hadn't hit the bong that day it was bad, same for trade in values it all depended on his mood. The other used game store sold way under the going price for most games, sadly it closed to. We need to out these stores so that everyone knows to avoid them.
  • Incredibly scummy behaviour, not worth the effort of chasing up/arguing. Give a bad review on their FB page if they have one.

I had a similar experience a couple of years back.

Went to a Cash Converters(ns if there are any in the USA. it's bit of a snazzier pawn shop with franchises, does loans and payment plans too) saw a bunch of SNES games priced and for sale in the glass cabinet.

DKC 1-3, Mario World $19 each, Bubsy 2, Super Chase HQ, Ghouls N Ghosts $15 each.

Bit of bartering, worker says he'll do $85 for me total. Happy with that. go to the counter, he scans them, apparently they can't be sold and should not have been priced to sell. May have been something to do with a loan issue? I can't remember.

They told me that i'd be able to buy them tomorrow. I said fine no worries. Went back the next morning before work, only the latter 3 were available. Knocked $5 each off of them.

Reasonably happy ending, was a bit annoyed at the time. Yo'd think they'd have practises in place to stop that from happening.

When the GameStop employee scanned the game for purchase it came up at $19.99. I told the employee first , the game says $9.99 on the price tag and second, it was in a 50% off bin. The GS employee said the $9.99 must be the 50% off price. I walked over to the bin and grabbed the sign. I gave it to the employee and said read this. "50% off price marked". The employee told me it must be a mistake and someone must have move the game from the wall to the bin. I again walked over to the box and grabbed 2 other copies of the game, held them up and stated and these??? The GS employee looked at the two copies and said mine was the deluxe addition with some other game on it or some BS!! I think he could tell I was getting upset (to say the least) and gave me the game at $5 plus tax.

I got home and really didn't feel like I won. I was upset I had to prove my point to a GS employee who shouldn't one, argue with a customer and two, give a sh*t about an xbox 360 game that was "so called" mismarked.

**Insult to injury...The damn game sucked!!!

That is rediculous on their part. Experiences like that make it difficult to come back. I had a couple similar experiences with Gamers on 72nd & Dodge except they didn't budge and I told the location on 130th & Center what happened and they had me sign a petition to change the management. I found the whole experience odd. I wonder if they just had so many complaints about the store that they made up the petition thing to seem like they care and convert the customers to their location?

OMG.  I totally agree, worst service in Omaha has to be Gamers on 72nd.

Last I saw that location closed, or they had a huge dumpster out front.  When I was in gamers on 72nd they were pushing some IKEA crap stating the owner now runs an IKEA outlet from the store??  Whatever...I would rather order from Ebay as the prices with shipping are $3-10 lower than what Gamers is charging.

For local stores I stick with Ben's Game Zone in LaVista.  He is average priced but you can sometimes find a good deal or two.  Plus Ben is a nice guy.

Lol. I've bought quite a few different things from them on ebay and were literally near half price BIN than they were in store. I really want to ask someone in management what that was all about. I've stopped in at Ben's Game Zone a couple times. He hasn't been there but his family was and they were pleasant to talk to. Game On in Council Bluffs has the best retro prices around but they don't get a huge inventory. I've flipped a few of their games on NA...
