So barrelsAndRivets... is that device comfortable to play NES on? I just tried Marble Madness on my PSP and it's a definite no go.
Does it come with a magnifying glass?Wow.
It's not THAT bad. Plus, I have amazing vision. Maybe not for long if i keep using it, though, hah. Plus one of the perks of a shield is that is has a tegra GPU in it, and can go via HDMI to a TV very nicely. Granted, this thing is overkill for old-school emulation, but it's all I really use it for.
As for NES emulation on this, I've played on worse d-pads. This one is a bit stiff, but is very responsive. I never bother with the analog sticks, but they feel loose. So... yeah, it's OK. Definitely nicer than having the screen and hands on the same horizontal line like the PSP.
But yeah, for those that don't know, a shield portable is made by nvidia, and is basically an android phone with a processor on steroids, an attached beast of a controller, HDMI out, etc etc..

So I have to admit, I fucking googled gamemaster 5000 ( or whatever it was hosehead said it was). But anyways, that thing is pretty cool! It would however seem the controller is attached to the screen? Is it fragile and easy to fuck up?
Not fragile at all. Solid, well-built piece of hardware. Screen flips up, so yes controller is attached. You can use Bluetooth controllers with it too. Screen is touch. It really is a super rugged android phone on steroids, minus calling.
I'm probably not going to get to play at all this week. Future in-laws are apparently showing up tomorrow and staying until Sunday (my better half, who has been in another state for work, is coming back tomorrow as well). Suffice to say the TV in the house will be occupied (it's in the living room and how nice for us, they're going to stay on our large couch).

Welp! I'm getting one of those if you are giving it that solid a rating! I've wanted something like that for awhile now!
There, I finally broke the fucking 170k barrier and it only took many, many, many hours of practice.
Well done, Mbd!!!
*pom-poms* You can do it. You can take 1st place!
Well let's see. To get that score I got to the ultimate race with 99 seconds left and beat it in 25 seconds. If I could figure out how to beat it four seconds faster then I'd get a much higher score. I doubt that it's going to happen, but who knows.

170 is a top 8 lock. It would be cool to see someone hit 180k.

Heck yes, it would be pretty awesome to see someone break 180k points.
Don't count on me to try that, though. Gotta leave to those people who are good at videogames and this to try.
IF I post something, it will be a meagre participation score.

I can't imagine playing this with a keyboard. You need a good old NES pad for this one, where your thumb can easily slide around the small directional buttons and hit diagonals.

I've found the NES Advantage to be more suited to this game, personally. An analog stick goes a long way with more acccurately hitting those diagonals that are so prevalent in the game.

It is pretty terrible, but I am yet to find a gamepad that suits my needs whe playing on the PC with an emulator.
Even the XBOX 360 one felt laggy for me. All the USB adapters for traditional gamepads also added a lot of lag in my tests, so I stuck with the keyboard for playing emulators.
There's a weird glitch in the aerial race that I've wondered about. I've found an example at the 47:25 mark in this video. Sometimes in the last jump of the piston section, it looks like you're landing correctly, but instead the marble shatters. I wonder what triggers this.
That particular jump is very finicky. It's easy to screw it up.

I'm not sure exactly what triggers it, though my guess would be the jump followed by a steep incline. I don't know if that happens elsewhere in the game, it's definitely a unique jump in general.
I've had exactly that same thing happen to me enough times though that I always come to a full stop before making that jump. I lose a second, but save a life (and thus more seconds overall).

That's my most hated jump in the game. I'll have a good run going hit tyat jump and die somehow...
Well I have to thank the weekly contests for giving me incentive to get good at another game. I could not even beat this game before practicing it for the contests, and now I can beat it with over 100k in my sleep.
Some other games that I could not beat before playing them for the contests were Double Dragon, Battletoads and Isolated Warrior.

Maybe the game thinks you fell and shattered given the descent after the jump. I saw on his second attempt he paused after jumping and survived.

Makes sense. The game may have a short timer (half a second maybe) where if it sees "in air" and "descent" to certain degrees within that interval, it calls you broken.

Congratulations man! I only had a chance to beat the game once this week and I only managed 92k. I'd be happy if I could break the 100k mark.
