need to make a NES label...yes I know it has been asked

I can't find a link to the thread on the "how to make a NES label" topic. I need to "invent" a Space Invaders label. I tried a search, but only got four topics. I know it was discussed not too long ago. Can anyone direct me to the right source? Thanks!!

  • What exactly do you mean by "invent" a label? You mean like design and produce the label from scratch using photoshop, or physically print it out and stick it on the cartridge? I've made labels before, it's not that hard.
  • The whole bit. I built a Space Invaders cart for NES, so now I need to make a label. I saw a full thread on it before, but now cannot find it. My wife is going to design and print me a label from scratch....unless there is an easier way to do it.

The article mentioned size and pixel...plus what kind of paper stock to use...and even how to get that shiny cover. She is a wizard with photoshop, but I figure there is no reason to try and learn all the little stuff by "trial and error" for just one label....especially since the info is out there already.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Here is an example of one I made: Moon Crystal Label. The dimensions I used were 325px (width) by 562px (height) and it seems to work pretty well. I don't know what the "official" dimensions are, but that's what I use and it works pretty well. Make sure you have it printed out with a width of 2.25 inches and a height of 3.88. I think those are the dimensions I used, which will make it SLIGHTLY larger than a standard NES label, but I like it slightly larger because then you can cut away the excess label around the edges to ensure that you don't have any tiny white borders.

As for printing out labels, the way I do it is just print them out on my own home computer onto glossy sticker paper, and I have a straight arm cutter that I use, although regular scissors will work to cut it also but you have to cut carefully to make sure your edges are straight (obviously).

Also, I have read before that you can print it out on regular sticker paper, and before you cut it out, cover it with clear packing tape, THEN cut it out to get the waterproof label effect. I have never tried this myself, but from what I understand, it works pretty well.

How did you get a Space Invaders cart?

It was released in Japan, so you can make your own repro using the ROM widely available on the web. At least, I'm assuming that that's what he did.
  • That is exactly what I did. It is easy to turn any Famicom into a NES....just use a convertor. And it is for sure that if this old guy...with no skills...can do it, it is very easy to do. I wish I could do a Frogger. The classics are so cool.
  • well, after reading again what you wrote, that is not exactly what I did. I don't know a thing about making repros, I just took the Space Invaders famicom chip and attatched it to a Stackup/gyromite convertor...then put it in a NES cart. Super easy!!

But I need a label now.

And thanks for the help so far!

Even easier! (assuming you've got the Famicom game lying around)
