  • Stoked for Octopath Traveler (why they decided to name it "Project" Octopath Traveler and tack on an overused cliché-sounding extra word to an original-sounding title, I'll never know). The demo is great so far, definitely picking it up when it drops. It's great to see third-party developers jumping aboard the Switch train, the system is already leaving the Wii U in a cloud of dust in the rear view, which is probably to the delight of Nintendo. Although it had some truly great first-party games (maybe 30 good games on the system total) and I don't regret buying one, the system taken for all of its merits was essentially a fucking disaster. My hope for the future of Nintendo waned dramatically during the Wii U era, so I'm extremely happy with the results the Switch has produced so far.

I think "Project" is on there because they don't have a definite name yet. Octopath Traveler is just a working title, so I imagine if they do stick with that title they will probably drop "Project".

Agreed on Wii U though. It was the first Nintendo system I've owned that I just couldn't get into. I barely played it the first year I owned it until Mario Kart came out. On the flipside, I've played the Switch multiple times a week since it launched 6 months ago. The portability and game selection is great and getting even better. I'm glad it's doing so well.

That said I'm mad we still don't have as something as basic as Netflix on the Switch. Seriously, what is the hold up?

Here's to hoping they drop the "Project" from the title. It's one of a handful of cliche game title words that if I never see again, it'll be too soon. Right along with "Legacy", "Legend", "Tales", "Chronicles", "Mana", and "Story". Imagine how many results you'd get if you entered any one of those words into the GameValueNow search bar. At least 400,000 of each. Ok maybe not 400,000. Maybe like 50.

I'm with you on the basic missing functions/apps on the Switch. No Netflix/YouTube? I have "black" and "white" to choose from for my themes? I mean you can't even set a damn screenshot as your background image, really? You'd think it would take one member of the Switch development team about 6 minutes to implement a feature so simple, but nope. 6 months in and zero on the theme front. It's baffling. Game data transfer if your Switch encounters a problem and needs replacing? Y'know, a feature included on every other Nintendo console since the advent of the SD card? Newp. Another baffler. Here's to hoping they work out these kinks, and fast.

I am beyond hyped for the full game of Octopath. I was curious about the game when I first saw it but after the demo I am super pumped for it. It's the kind of RPG I've been missing, that old school FF feel. Bravely Default was alright but didn't reek of old FF IMO. Where is this survey for Octopath?

I've played for about half an hour and am diggin it hard so far (would love to have spent more time but work) it def gives snes era vibes in the best of ways.
Apparently the survey is after you beat the story of the charecter you selected (or at least what story is presented for the demo)
  • Just played through both stories in the Octopath demo. This game is fantastic, it is 1000% a day one purchase.

I didn't see where you can rate it or whatever though, odd.
  • Coming soon on the eshop has Sine Mora Ex as releasing 9/26 but amazon has it as 12/29...

Nintendo did this on purpose no worries. They are staggering features as mentioned above to give the Switch a feel as you are always getting improvements. This is going to be a feature rich system but plan on seeing versions next year with larger internal SD cards when Netflix etc rolls out.

Nintendo had nothing to do with the lack of Netflix Hulu Youtube etc. It was a decision THOSE companies made. Whatever is not on the switch, sans a native browser, is not there because those companies decided not to support the device. End of story.

Not sure where you got that information or making an educated guess....... either way follow up when they start rolling out via updates.

    Wrong
  • Q: Netflix and video apps are absent from the Switch. Is this console just a gaming device or is other entertainment a part of it?

A: Our development focus was creating a game-playing machine. That's going to continue to be our focus.

We are having conversations with companies like Netflix and Amazon and Hulu, all of the companies that make a range of different applications. Certainly those types of experiences will come to the platform.
  • Aka Reggie didn't want to say outright that the WiiU was such a pile of shit that even Netflix didn't want to Dev an app for it a lunch. Now they're spinning it like, oh yeah we wanted it like that. It's like when Billy Madison says it's cool to pee your pants. It's not. The WiiU fucked Nintendo and they're dealing with it in a healthy way.

That doesn't make sense. Netflix has their app on so many different devices, many of which sell less than the Wii U. And it's not just Netflix, it's all streaming services. I don't think that the Wii U's commercial failure had anything to do with the delay with Netflix/Hulu/etc. Not only that but the hype behind the Switch was and is pretty significant.
  • Netflix, Hulu, and the like are free to download apps. They get money from subscriptions. The only reason they would refuse is if Nintendo didn't want the app.

9/26 physical and digital I believe. It's only $20 on Amazon right now, which is pretty good.

I believe this is also correct from what I'm reading online of a physical release in the US 9/26 and EU in October. I have this on ps4 but will gladly buy another for Switch.
  • Just watch Netflix, Youtube, and the internet browser come out next year locked behind a paywall. This will give the Nintendo subscription service "value."
  • You guys see how they found an NES emulator and GOLF 'hidden' on every Switch.
  • I saw that, yes.
  • Didn't want to start a whole new thread or anything so thought I would post a pic of my new Joycons here, where the Switch fans hang out:

...fuck yeah a portable Doom? Sign me up. Wonder if they'll make amiibo for it? Doom slayer/guy would be awesome

Doom is a great game for the Switch regardless if you personally buy it or not. It's really bringing a lot of positive attention to the Switch for being able to run a game like that on a portable system. Even YT channels and forums that are typically polluted with PS4/Xbone graphic whores are generally praising the Switch. So insane to see how things have come around for Nintendo with this console. First attaching Zelda to it and now producing quite a few 3rd party titles that aren't that old or watered down. I thought it would be a snooze fest after Zelda (which is was briefly), but now this system seems to have a ton of support behind it and I think Doom will help bring in more 3rd party support and has given the system a lot of respect from people who generally poop on Nintendo.

Doom on Switch will be a 1.5+ year old game that will be vastly inferior to the PS4/XB1 versions. It's a great game, but I can't imagine it will sell a ton of copies on a Nintendo system. Also, anyone who's a graphics whore is gaming on PC, not console.

Obviously it won't be competing with Nintendo 1st party stuff in terms of sales, but I think it will do relatively well... good enough for them to justify porting it over.  And honestly, a year and a half old game on high powered home consoles being available on the portable device, that's not bad in my opinion, even if it will only be running in 30 fps/720 in handheld mode. Regardless, I think it's a positive move for the Switch and caught a lot of people by surprise when it was announced. Due to the portability of the console there will be a number of people double dipping on the game no doubt.

  • ^Yep. I've got Doom on PS4 but if I can take it to work and play on breaks? That's awesome. Also, it may not move tons of systems but these games coming out means we can be hopeful that third party developers are genuinely backing the system so we may be seeing more similar titles in the future. And, again with the portability, this makes the Switch desirable to people who normally wouldn't care for Nintendo.
  • ^^ I agree with the comments above. I think DOOM coming to the system is fantastic. I for one will be buying it, so there is at least 1 sale

OP updated with today's releases: Dragonball Xenoverse 2, LEGO Ninjago Movie and Pokken Tournament DX
  • The only thing turning me off about Doom is it is supposedly 720p 30fps. 720p doesn't bother me at all, but I think 30fps for a faster first person shooter like Doom might be a bit too much of a downgrade.

Is anyone getting Pokken? I had it on Wii U and got like halfway through the single player before I stopped. It was ok, but not something I would buy again at full price.
  • I never played Pokken and I'm not a huge fan of Tekken or fighters in general so it's probably a pass for me. Xenoverse I may give a shot, though. I had the first one on PS4 and got a little bored with it... but as an on the go game it might be better.

I wouldn't get too wrapped up in the numbers. Most impressions I've seen online are very positive despite it only being 30fps. I think it's an understandable concession for it running on a hybrid device. Most people I saw were very impressed with what they saw and played.

I played it on PS4 and I'll be picking it up despite already owning it on PS4. I will also be double dipping on Skyrim since I never finished it and have never tried the DLC. The option to be able to switch from the TV to handheld mode when my wife/kids need the TV is a key feature for me. It lets me keep playing without having to go to my gaming room. I've fell in love with the flexibility.
