I just laugh at how cheap all the homes are. Ppl buying houses for under $700k. That's like a cardboard box in an alley here
Jeez. Where I'm from, it's possible to get a house for $50k. A small one, in a crappy area, but still.
My mom watches these shows all the time too. I think it's funny when they always complain that the kitchen needs to be entirely remodeled when it's better than ours which is perfectly functional
I do get kind of salty though seeing kids my age who somehow have a budget of $850k and I'm sitting here making payments on my student loans, like damn.
People just want the best of the Best for no cost oh man this 1yr old kitchen needs to be redone. My favorite is when the paint color is a deal breaker.
It shows that they have no idea what they are talking about
As a kid,I used to hate HGTV. Now I love that channel. Property Bros is my favorite. I do understand where you are coming from though Estil.
What is funny is that most of the time these shows have younger attractive couples with huge budgets. Like $750k+. Are they all doctors, lawyers,CEOs?
The show I find hilarious is the one where people who just won the lottery are looking to buy a house. It's funny because they are spending all this money and the overwhelming odds are that they will blow all the money, end back up where they originally were, and will end up having to get rid of the house.
If you want annoying, try working at a place with predominantly elderly people who just want to watch Fox News,CNN,etc all day every day. Now THAT gets very annoying very quick.
Let me be clear, I also love hgtv, diy network and "This Old House" Is my F'in JAM but house hunters is annoying. But for some reason I always end up sitting there and watching it for like two hours.

50k? You can't get a spot for an RV at a trailer park here for that.
If you can swindle your wife into it, see if you can't get her to watch repo shows as well.
The only shows I'm into that she won't really watch are Archer and Bojack. (I'm guessing on Bojack since it is basically a cartoon version of Californication, and we made it about 3 seasons into that show before she couldn't do it anymore)
We don't watch a lot of HGTV, though. (but the Roku app does have a pretty good back catalog)
I've heard that Archer is really off-color, so my friend recommended it to me as a compliment to my personality. I dunno if that's true or not; I should really check it out sometime.
I mean, are they coached into saying those things?
Essentially the whole show is staged. Many times the buyers have already purchased a house, and the houses they are looking at aren't even for sale. By showing off houses that are "finished" they can promote their other shows that tell you how to finish yours!

Well damn. I thought this thread would give me some helpful advise for when my wife decides to have an impulse home redesign. Like how to prevent it from happening.
My wife often likes to watch House Hunters and other such related shows on TV and it drives me crazy!! In every...single...episode...every episode they want stainless steel appliances, granite counter tops, center of city (but then complain about traffice noise!), curbside appeal, entertain guests, crown molding, and all I ever see is dogs, never any kitties And it's always one wants move in ready, the other fix-er-upper. Seriously if I wasn't some boring ol' teetotaller (I just never liked alcohol or tobacco) I could make a drinking game out of this!
Seriously, don't people have different tastes and such about what kind of houses and such they want? Why does most everyone on those shows want the same...old...thing?? I mean, are they coached into saying those things? Do they have some sort of behind the scenes deal with US Steel and whoever is the main granite companies? As for non-stainless steel applicances being called "outdated" our apt complex was just renovated a year or two ago and our white (gasp!!) refrigerator that comes with it was made in 2015.
I'm building a house this year with stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, crown molding, and we have a dog with no cat. You missed another big one though, island kitchen, as that is fairly standard for a "modern" house.
That's just what we like and what is the norm now if you're buying or building a new house. If you don't have those tastes that is fine, but those are typical of the "average" American looking for a new house. Go look at any new house in a new development and that stuff will be on display I'm sure.
Seriously, don't people have different tastes and such about what kind of houses and such they want? Why does most everyone on those shows want the same...old...thing??
Women don't have their own opinions and are led by current fashions/trends/social signalling. If the purchase decisions are led by women, this is the result you get.

Broad generalizations of people don't really do anyone any good. We have a diverse group of members here on NA, including women, and I personally know plenty of strong, independent, very intelligent women who are quite capable of making their own decisions. I have seen plenty of 'jokes' over the years here and elsewhere about women and I don't think it's constructive or appropriate.
FYI, all reality TV is scripted. I mean, Fixer Upper shows 3x houses at the beginning and the buyer chooses one. My wife and I have always asked why do they do this-- it can take months to buy a home, so the home they want will always be pre-bought before the episode. I mean, it adds time to an episode to waste 10 minutes looking at homes and "choosing" one, but mortgages take time and they can even fall through. That's a risk of wasted footage and time that HGTV (or any cable company) would want to spend.
The only part that is "real" is certainly all of the work and, certainly, the reveals... but sometimes they do have to shoot reveals multiple times when something ruins the first reaction.
Anyway, it's TV and it should never be trusted as legitimate, so just enjoy the ride.
We had an episode of HH International filmed at the gym.
It's scripted.
Well, it's official. The life of the Nolan's is just too interesting now.
We shut down the gym for a Saturday, they filmed for 8 hours, a girl hitting a bag for literally 2 seconds made the cut, and we got a "blink and you'll miss it" credit. Total waste of time and negative experience.
The episode was "Changing Plans for Love in Roatan" for those interested.
Seriously, don't people have different tastes and such about what kind of houses and such they want? Why does most everyone on those shows want the same...old...thing??

Late to the thread, it seems, but I feel your pain, Estil. My wife watches those shows pretty regularly and I often just have to leave the room to avoid it souring my mood. Can't stand them. They only exist to advertise for real estate brokerages and major hardware/building-supply chains...which is fine, I guess. I'm just not the kind of person who can stomach that kind of thing.
This isn't an HGTV thing but what's up with this so called "Real" Housewives? I'm sure none are even close to being anything like a real housewife. Now this is an example of a real housewife:
PS: Notice her distinctive "woosh" needs a hangin' (and in her Coal Miners Daughter song her mama scrubbed their clothes on a wooshboard every day)...it's a Kentucky thing, y'all wouldn't understand
If you can swindle your wife into it, see if you can't get her to watch repo shows as well.

Archer is one of the best shows on TV. Love it.
We both have some shows that we'd rather watch alone. I can't get her to watch baseball, and I'm not as big of a fan of the cooking shows she likes watching as she is. The secret, however, is if one of the parties watching TV doesn't particularly like what the other is watching, try to make it fun for both of you. For example, she wouldn't watch sports at all before meeting me, but now she's willing to tune in to almost anything now that it's basically become "what stupid, pointless, and obvious thing will the announcer say next." Football and coach/sideline interviews are the best for this. On the flip side, she'll say how stupid people are during cooking shows and it makes it more fun for me.
Just came here to echo that Archer is awesome and a show that my wife and I both love to watch together.
Seriously, don't people have different tastes and such about what kind of houses and such they want? Why does most everyone on those shows want the same...old...thing??

I was just thinking this mentality applies to our hobby too. Spikes and hypes prove collectors are sheeple too.
Popcorn ceilings and carpeting just aren't "warm and inviting" anymore.
I would demand these things in my house i was searching for. Shag carpet specifically.
On a related note, why are people so obsessed with hardwood floors? Eveyone I know wants hardwood floors in their homes. I cant stand wood floors they constantly look dirty and dusty and most of the time people put an area rug on the wood floor anyway. So what was the point of getting wood floors if you just put a rug on it anyway??!!!
Hardwood floors are wanted for the same reason granite/marble countertops... wealth display.
My home growing up had hard wood floors. Originally covered by green 'astroturf' 70s carpet, but my parents ripped that up and finished the hard wood. The house was built in the early 60s when wood was the standard flooring, even with carpet on top.
Now, hard wood is super expensive and a display of wealth. It's why most 'hard wood' is just wood laminate.
