Need advice on storing/shelving Nintendo Power magazines

I have a collection of NPs about 200+ strong at this point. Great condition, most have posters, got them at a great price, very happy with them. But they are miserable to store and display. I had to move them from a higher shelf because I was afraid the weight would rip it out of the wall and crush all the games on the shelf below. If I remove more than one at a time, they fall over in stacks, and that can't be good for them- it certainly isn't easy to work with. Whenever I add more or rearrange them, I have to push them from one side and some issues will "squeeze" out.

Does anyone know the proper way to store magazines like this, so I can avoid these problems and adjust them easily when necessary?

You don't have to spend that much TBH if you look up guides online you can make your own out of stiff cardboard. If you want to protect them even more and don't take them out that often, you could try getting something like comic book plastic covers and those stiff boards they have in them as well. I know they make a magazine sized one...or used to. Can't remember the name of it though.

I'm going to try and get some of these holders for my own collection. Again not going to spend that much but I do want them to be pretty hefty.
  • magazine slipcovers might help with some of the preservation, although I know you're asking more about weight and such
  • Definitely would put slip covers, and depending on your amount of space proper shelving space could be made for them or you could go for Magazine boxs much like comic book boxes. They also sell plastic magazine Shelf organizers. With a collection like that you would need quite a few
  • When I lived at the old apartment, I had something very similar to the ones Astor linked to, designed for magazines. That is how I stored all of my magazines. They were quite cheap too, only about $3 USD each, made of plastic. Surely you can get cheaper ones back in the States than $20 a piece, right? But this would be my recommendation.
  • I have mine in magazine slip cover, and I just use the cardboard magazine holders from Ikea, they're like $3 for a 5 pack so theyre super cheap and work great! Eventually I want to get the offical nintendo power ones but these make great place holders until then.

The Ikea magazine covers are cool. You can even paint the wood ones if you want to customize the look.
  • Nintendo Power branded magazine holders exist as well if you want an authentic retro item. Of course that will cost more. Get those white ones and throw some stickers n them or something!

These are what i use and they work great. Best part is if you are good with drawing/markers, you can make really cool custom ones because they are just cardboard.

  • I really like this Ikea idea for NPower Mags. Mine are just in haphazard stacks so I really need to do something about it.

Also I wonder if anyone has an idea for something similar for comic books?

And does anyone remove the shipping address labels from their Nintendo Power magazines?

We call those "Princeton Files" at work. They come in plastic and metal, too.

You might try a local or university library to see if they have any they might give away. With many periodicals going electronic, they might have some empty ones in the back that they can't get rid of.

  • Fantastic suggestions! I'll look into those holders; I think they're exactly what I need.

Here's what I ended up putting mine in sleeves in a 3-ring binder a while ago:

In either case, gotta be cautious of which types of plastic you use.

  • I used the IKEA holders for a while, but stopped using them. I didn't like that I couldn't see which volume was which.

I also used slip covers to protect each issue but found them to be just too much.

I currently have my stash stored as you do, even some of the more valuable issues.

At the end of the day, these magazines were not made to stand the test of time. The idea of preserving them is neat, but to what end? They will most certainly last your lifetime so long as they aren't over exposed to the elements. If they are on a shelf, in a room, they'll likely make it.
  • I like that IKEA idea. I've got a ton of vintage magazines that are just sitting on the floor unprotected. I almost threw some out and sell the valuable ones but with this method I can at least keep some of them.

Any idea what the weight of each of these holders are full of NPs/EGMs/GamePros?

Usually 5-6lbs, depending on their material.

Nintendo power is cool and all, but show more pics of the supervision please!  That box looks pretty minty (For a supervision box).  I also don't reconize that diablo book, and that'll drive me nuts for a while.

Edit: Through the power of coffee, I think I remember that book.  Diablo one Prima guide, the non-ugly edition. I have the red "value edition" one, where the spine says "ONLY 9.99!" on it and the whole outside is ugly.  Still a nice gude though.

  • I keep all of mine in bags and top loaders. It may be expensive but 30 years from now, they will still look like I pulled them from the newstand. If you want to preserve these for the years to come, its the only way.

You can use the FLYTs for all sorts of things that would normally fall over; comic books, art books, RPG sourcebooks, magazines. I even have a couple that are cut down into 16-count CD holders; just need to modify one of the corners to make the fit.

  • Hey all! Long time no post!

FWIW, I use these. They run $7 each and are great because you can see the full spine of the magazine.
