My brother convinced his company & helped develop a Nintendo Switch custom insert Pelican Case & it

Here's the link, it's $70 + shipping

Foam Only: http://www.thepelicanstore.com/1170nins-insert-only-1712.aspx

I might be biased since this is my brother who helped create/launch this foam and case but it is pretty rad. Having a Pelican case for the Switch is awesome.

I was able to tool around with the prototype foam builds as the project was coming together.

What's cool is actually the size, I expected it to be bulkier than it is when in reality it's pretty sleek and has a small footprint. I'm planning on keeping my Switch, 2 straps, my USB C cable, games, and ear buds in the case.

The Switch fits great in the foam and the case is great as usual from Pelican. I have one ordered, granted like I said I'm probably a bit biased but it's a rad case especially if you travel a ton.

Here's what my brother has to say about it:

"I work for a Pelican Case distributor/case maker/foam fabricator and wanted a case for my Switch. Based on the strength of console sales I was able to convince the owner that a custom interior for a Pelican case is a great idea.

The foam isn't glued in but fits snug and we are planning on doing multiple revisions as Nintendo inevitably comes out with new versions of the Switch. The foam is also sold separately if you already have the Pelican 1170 case.

We also want feedback! I'm personally hoping Nintendo makes a version of the Joycons with a D-Pad instead of an analog stick and I would love to add storage in the lid of the case for the extra Joycons.

If you're not familiar with Pelican cases, they are military-grade tough, water-tight cases. They also come with a lifetime warranty if you ever have the handle or latch break or even if the case cracks, you're covered."

  • This looks really awesome. The thing I've been concerned with for Switch cases is how the analog sticks will fare. I have felt each case design I've seen did not accommodate for the sticks, with no extra bit cut out for them to rest in if the case was smushed together or flipped over, where the Switch went to the opposite side of where it was supposed to be, would they be pushed in and potentially damaged?

Anyways, this is definitely the best looking case I've seen so far. I am very interested in getting one.
  • That is pretty sweet. My company uses custom Pelican cases as well and those things are tough. Steep price, though. It's nice.

I hear you about the sticks.  My brother posted this on Reddit and has been fielding questions, this came up and here is what he had to say:

"The lid foam is juuuuuust thick enough so the foam barely touches the tops of the analog sticks. You get almost no bounce with the Switch and accessories inside. I have been carrying my Switch in the prototype for the last 2 weeks, dropped it several times, threw it in my car, and it is solid."

Steep price but trust me when I say with the cost of the case, the cost of running the water jet cutting and the labor (while not intensive) to put in the insetrs they're selling them at a pretty small mark up.  If these cases sell they plan on releasing other sizes to accomadate the dock/pro controller/ etc.  It'll depend on how this one sells.

  • The price made me flinch but it is very cool!

Like I said, my company uses them too so I know about it well.  They're definitely some of the best you can buy.  Our stuff is meant to withstand being dropped down mountains.  I'm sure nothing is going to harm any Switch put in one of those things.

Yeah I hear you and totally get the double take on the price. The cool thing is though that Pelican's are complete lifetime garauntee and as Nintendo revises the Switch his company will be making new foam inserts in different configurations so if you want to update your case you can just buy the new foam.

Not to mention the after market right now for regular Switch cases is nuts, producers just didn't make enough.
  • Can I buy just the insert?

You can get this case for around 37 bucks on amazon. Not sure if the insert is worth 30+ dollars.

Awesome, well they might be turning out other cases depending on how these sell, and regardless if you're interested in this case or not any feedback you throw their way in what you'd want or how you think the insert could be improved, they're all ears right now if you want to hit them up.

EDIT: Right, of course you can get the case solo. Water jetting the foam, placing it in the case, packaging, not to mention R&D cause the price to be what it is.  I completely understand if this product is not in your price range, if you're interested in just the foam, hit the company up.  The more interest, the more likely they'd sell it solo.  I imagine if feedback is pretty positive and high they totally would especially now that they have the logistics of the foam all down.

I don't work there so I don't want to speak for the company, I'm just pimping what I think is a cool case that my brother helped put together.

Exactly what I wanted, already had the case.  Thanks.

Edit: 38$? Never mind, I'll Go ghetto tactical and just pluck and pull if I decide to do it.  It does remind me how custom foam inserts are VERY pricey though, so price is right.

I hear you, doesn't hurt to shoot the company a line and express your interest, you never know.

  • How about a deeper one that can hold the dock and Pro controller?

Great question.  It's totally been talked about trust me.  If this one sells, and it's currently the #1 post on r/Nintendo on Reddit, so I think it'll do pretty good, they'll look into expanding the line, specifically a case that holds the dock and pro controller.  It'll be a bit pricier but it is def something that is being considered!
  • That thing is badass.

Sorry but you're the second favourite kid now
  • I am not convinced this is a functional fully working case. I mean when I look into buying phones, I need to watch sledgehammers to phone screens, freezing phones, blending phones etc just to prove they are worth my time and money. All of these are real situations of course. So unless I see a car running over this case or dropping it from a plane into a pool of acid, I am not sold.

I am kidding of course.   That is one very nice case though. I would feel like a secret agent or something walking around with this. Very cool idea and project. I hope these sell like hot cakes.

Hahah, that is the best comment ever, we have 4 boys in our family, if this Switch case puts him(#4) over me(#2) I will sacrifice my spot!

  • Yeah, pelican cases are awesome.

We store our XRF analyzer in there. It's basically a portable radioactive gun that analyzes materials for their metal content and costs about $25,000 new...can't say enough how many times we dropped that case fearing the absolute worst (as in wearing a Geiger counter just to approach it since we don't *really* know how radioactive it is) only to find it not only completely unharmed, but sometimes damaging the floor where it landed

Title changes between janitor, to forklift operator, then metallurgist to chemist, and field rep to telemarketer, web designer to secretary, even warehouse manager to co owner.

The joys of being the son of a guy who owns a small company who doesn't know how to use a computer

It all boils down to scrap metal broker though. We buy and sell industrial scrap metals. Focusing right now a lot on lead right now since we can make a couple cents per pound and process as much as 15000 lbs a day. I sure miss working with silver though, then again I'm happy not to work with nitric acid anymore
  • Sweet, that's rad, sounds like a pretty damn interesting business

So if someone were to purchase this, how would they get the NES style one?

All you have to do is choose the "silver" case and the sticker comes with it.  The case will not come with the black latch my brother modded his latch personally.

Thanks everyone for the support!  My brother has had a lot of interest in the case and will be looking to expand the line eventually.  He plans on kicking off development of larger cases that hold the dock and pro controller as well.  He should be handling all of the customer service on these so if you have any questions, feel free to hit them up.  I can probably handle most questions about how it looks/feels/space/etc if anyone has questions.

It's funny, we were talking at dinner at my parents on Sunday and I mentioned I bet Kotaku or one of the other big gaming sites would probably post about the case since they all keep an eye on Reddit and Gaf (and clearly NA as seen in the past) for news.  Pretty awesome it actually happened!
