OTRAOTAKU's N64 Kiosk Restoration

I havent had time to post much yet. But I am super excited to have just picked up yet another kiosk. Almost a week ago and I'm Literally tearing into it to restore it. Everything is kinda dusty and the bottom is kinda rusty but I am going to try to make this 20yr old Bad boy shine like new again

LIGHTS,GAME,ACTION!:

So when I picked it up The Header light, console, TV were the only things powering up. The TIME board and everything related to it did not function but after a some quick soldering and help from a fellow member Dewisp02. He and I were able to determine that the culprit was the PSU for that board that was bad. (Whew!) Thankfully after replacing that Powersupply I was able to hear Mario tell me "Your time is up! Let someone else play God Damn it!"

(PICTURE OF BROKEN SOLDER CONNECTION TO AUDIO INPUT)

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SKIP MY BANTER THE QUESTIONS ARE IN "RED"

QUESTION G: What the heck is that Blue Metallic Plastic Grid for? (I asume it goes to the Maruqee Lamp somehow?)

QUESTION C: What is up with my Controller Mounts? The Two Controller Mounts on my unit are different colors. Also the Controller housing pieces are weird, Are they missing some parts or were these Bent Metal Pieces someone elses Temporary answer or are they different parts from two diferent Controller Revisions? (W/without rumble paks? etc.) The one black one had a destroyed N64 Logo on it, Ive pulled it off to clean and recondition it. I Will print Prototypical replacements later. Anyone happen to know anything about these pieces?  UPDATE: Mouting cages for the controllers on my unit are currently missing If you Have any to trade or sell let me know!

QUESTION M: So this Kiosk has a Timer to prevent Kids from sitting on it all day at a department store and Resets with an adjustment, I was wondering is there a possible setting for either the MIN or MAX combination of these setting would temporarily disable the TIMER feature? My unit also did not have that orange inside sticker for the Board controls, What are the dimensions on that sticker? While im printing Prototypical replacements I might as well make one for this one too. If anyone could chime in That would be great. If I were to guess looking at other units its about 1" by 7" inches?

QUESTION P: Oddly enough, Despite my "Demo" console being in pretty good condition The Power switch on my Demo Unit Console always remains "ON" even after Rocking it to the "OFF" position. Were these units designed with this in mind? or did someone just break the power switch? lol UPDATE: As suspected the rocker switch was just broken and was not intended to stay in the "ON" position.

QUESTION I:
Really fortunate to have picked up a kiosk with one of these original "Controls & Instructions Inserts"It is Magnetic and sticks to the Consoles Bezel. Does anyone know if these were made for any other games? Really Neat! I definitely plan on making a few custom ones to display my favorite games   UPDATE: Still not sure if any other inserts exist but I have already started a couple of "Custom" Instructional Demo Inserts will post pics soon

Great Concept!

QUESTION R: Im currently trying Apple Cider Vinegar to remove the rust (Theres alot!) I bought a spray bottle of Rutoleum GEL that is working better on the Vertical Rust spots and Stains. If there is anything better you can reccommend please do im all ears, even like a Buffer or Polish any ideas would be appreciated. What would you do/use? I also have to remove that Rubber Mat and re-adhere it to the Display once I clean up all of the rust underneath it. I was thinking about using 3M 98 Spray adhesive as I already have a Can, What do you guys think?

UPDATE: Ended up using a variety of products, But ultimately used a Paint Stripper and a Wirebrush attachment for my Drill. Used Rustoleum Metallic to patch up any voids, Shined/prepped with Penetrol Oill  and sealed with a Polyeurathane spray. The Mat is also now prepped and cleaned soaked in Apple Cider Vinegar to remove the rust and adhesive. Will post pics soon.

QUESTION Y: So Where can I get a Flux Capacitor? So I can build a time machine and just steal $#!*

  • Got some pictures up before cleaning it up.
  • Ah, I recognize that one, good job snagging it. Can't offer any advice, but good luck with it!
  • UPDATE/BUMP
  • Lots of great questions! I have the same kiosk that is in need of similar TLC; I'm interested to see what the community has to say. Definitely bookmaking this thread! (sorry I cannot offer any advice!)

Its alright, Im getting alot more questions PM to me than answers. lol

Im more than happy to help anyone else who needs dimensions or information on pieces that they are missing that I have in my possession

  • UPDATE: got some work done this week.

Very Excited to test a few metallic spray paints I had laying around the shop, I found that this Particular Rutoleum Metallic Spray paint Blends very well and was able to fill in Rust Removed areas on the spot. Tested it on the back first going to see how well it holds up after a few days and possibly use it on the bottom of the front. It is very hard to tell where this was applied on a smooth surface!

I pretty much removed all of the rust by now. I removed the N64 Mat and will Re-Apply it once everything is cleaned up.

Printed replacement labels for the Top of the Controller mounts. Still not sure what I am going to use to complete them though :/

Replaced the Ballast and got the Lower Lamp working underneath the console. Took apart the Header and cleaned the plastic.

  • Very nice job on cleaning up the kiosk. It's turning out great. Was wondering if you needed a key for yours as I have an extra. Also I have a spare NOS dome if anyone is in need of one to finish up theirs.
  • One of our members did contact me looking for a Dome, I'll PM you his information later. Unfortunately I can't use the key as the lock in my unit was destroyed.
  • Brittany Grashel had a NOS dome for sale, but not sure if it is still available.
  • It is still available.
  • Can you provide the info on the replacement ballast you used for the dome light? Mine needs replaced; I have not had the time to pull it and get the info off it.

Question C: Already sent you pics of both the expansion pak mount and the non-expansion pak mount.

Question P: My demo console's power switch as intended, so your switch is prolly broken. Easy fix though since you can solder.

Question R: You can mix cornstarch with 3-5% acetic acid (vinegar) to make a paste. It works well with rusty arcade parts, but you want to keep it "wet."

    Other Notes:

-Do you have the kickstand for the dome? Its on the left side. If not, I can send some pics of that for you.

-I just realized I am missing the bottom plastic cover with the vents that's below the dome assembly.

sounds good. I would love to see it go to someone who can use it.

Thanks Dewy   Good to know! Ill update theose fields once I fix the switch and No unfortunately I am missing quite a bit under the hood. Missing the Kickstand and the entire locking mechanism. yeah if you could send me some pics of the Kickstand that would be awesome! sick of holding that damn thing up anyways

    Ohhh! yeah... have to ask....

May I ask you for a big favor? if youre up for it... Could I "Pretty Please" borrow one of your controller cages so I could take it to a Fabrication shop and see if they copy it in some fashion, get some pieces (that are atleast somewhat prototypical) made for me?

Id love to stop by just to see your gameroom too! Maybe I could buy you dinner? or perhaps something else for your time?

Yes it is a 120v 22W Ballast I grabbed from Menards for like $5-$8?

This is the specs on the original.

  • UPDATE: So This is the Mat All washed up and cleaned with alcohol and dish soap after soaking in Apple Cider Vinegar over the weekend to remove the rust.

Just glued it back onto the frame this morning with 3M 98 spray adhesive. I Will see how it goes when I get home from work

When im happy with it installed back onto the unit. I will clean the residue off with alcohol and shine it with Castor Oil. Should look pretty nice when its all done.
  • Hey Otra or Dewi...or anyone else. Can you post or send me some pictures of what your TV is sitting on? From other pictures I see, mine don't look like the others!

The mobile page only showed this picture and not the others with it installed.. disregard the initial comment. haha For reference, that tray is sitting upside down. There is a lip on the front and notice the label is upside down.
  • UPDATE: I am officially done cleaning this baby up, Heres a Before and after of the Rust and damage Stripped, Cleaned up, Polished and sealed with the Mat reapplied.

I also have started working on CUSTOM Instructional inserts to place on the inside of the unit. I never did get "QUESTION I" Answered. Did they ever make any more of those official Inserts for this kiosk?

Anyways, Since I started making a few custom pieces I decided to Scan the original and Recreated the Mario 64 one I have if anyone wants to Snag it, youre more than welcome to use it to complete or restore your kiosk.

Added a picture to compare to the original at the bottom of this comment. I couldnt find the exact angle shots of mario and Bowser odd enough? They must have used CGI mario to capture different angles of the same 3D render for promotional materials. Im guessing oterwise it is Very Interesting

    ENJOY!
  • Thanks for the pics! Looks like someone just made the one I have out of wood, but they did a decent job of it, even put that hard plastic vinyl type siding around the edge of the wood.

Called T-molding if I am thinking correctly of what you're describing.

This look great! How did you remove the mat? I feel like that will be my biggest issue.

Removing the mat without damaging it is why I did not attempt to remove the minor rust my kiosk has. Now if it was as rusty as Otaku's (was), then I would have attempted it.

I guess I got pretty lucky as the Adhesive was starting to lose its "Hold" I just slowly pulled mine up inch by inch (Be careful not to tear it) you could also try putting the bottom in a large container like a baby pool and soaking it in Alcohol or some other product to will lift the adhesive. Just make sure its safe to use with Vinyl/Rubber and plastic in general as im sure an N64 Kiosk Mat would be near impossible to replace! o.O

Just make sure you use a Strong enough Adheisive to put it back on the first time. Cleaning off all of the old Adhessive Residue the first time is hard enough!

Yes, T-molding is what it is! I couldn't think of the word!

And Otrao it looks great! Awesome job!
  • Man, really excited to see the fully-assembled restoration. You're really putting a lot of heart and soul into it, it looks amazing.

Thanks guys, im in the process of Tearing it apart to put it in my gameroom. My buddy Dewisp02 let me borrow his Controller Mounts to get fabricated at a local Welding shop (still waiting to hear back on a quote   ) If anyone needs a controller mount made Please let me know I can put in an order for you. Should know by the end of the week how much it is going to cost per set.

Unfotunately the shop I am looking at wont be able to do a bulk discount in anything less than 100 pieces or I would as "Dewisp02" Suggested just have them run a dozen or so sets

    But anyways...

The restoration is going really well overall. I am impatient and cant wait for it to be installed in the gameroom

PM me what you're looking to have done. I'll see if we can do better than the quote you received!
