Rumormill: SNES Mini entering production

Supposedly, the reason why NES mini production ended is due to the rumored upcoming SNES mini.

  • This is good for 2 people: those who don't own original consoles and actually want to play the games and those collectors/resellers wanting to score a quick easy buck. Ever drives existed for years. I don't see the appeal at all.
  • Won't this distract from their marketing push for the Switch this holiday? I'm not convinced
  • If true, launch day will be like:

  • My goal is to buy as many as possible and hook up NA users that can't get one at retail plus shipping.
  • Oh and this will tell a lot about nintendo as a company if they meet demand, or dole a few out so scalpers can corner the market.
  • There still has to be an ulterior motive. Logic dictates that you sell as many as you can of the first before moving on to the second. Perhaps they wanted to end it early because the longer it stayed on the market the more people would hack/mod it to play SNES games and the fewer would buy the SNES version.

They probably didn't want the press to react to the SNES Mini with "yeah, but why bother when your NES CE can play the same games?" If the answer to that is "because you can't get an NES CE," well, there you have it.

It still makes more sense to revise the NES CE to be less hackable and there's still absolutely no reason I can think of to not continue production of the controller.
  • I kind of didn't want them to do this... because now they're not going to meet demand...AGAIN. And I'm going to get pissed when I don't get one.... AGAIN. But unlike the NES Classic, I WILL end up paying a scalper triple the price. As a SNES lover I need this.
  • Ebay scalpers rejoice! Nintendo can pretty well just shove this thing directly up their collective asses as far as I'm concerned. After their handling of the NES Classic I'll pass.

add a 3rd: Collectors who like collecting Nintendo products.
  • Congrats to the 3 people that get one.

They bungled the NES Classic so bad, I honestly think it will hurt overall interest in an SNES version.
  • Nintendo can go F themselves, yup im salty as shit over the NES mini debacle.
  • I didn't care about the NES mini, but the SNES mini might get a bite from me, especially to own an official USB SNES controller :9

Actually ... I may just buy the controller separate.

And then flipping them for four hundred dollars.

On the plus side, if they do an N64 version, they may have a surplus.   #N64burn

That' was my plan with the Nes Mini... it didn't work out. I've never even seen an extra controller for sale.

Yep. I planned to buy a bunch to refurb original NES controllers. Never saw a single one. Even compared to the NES CE itself, the stand-alone $10 MSRP controller was unobtanium. Also, it used the Wii/Wii U connector and compatibility (literally had the same electronics as a Wii Classic Controller Pro), so a I wouldn't assume that they're going with USB this time around either.

Would there be merit to an "NA Users Seeking SNES Minis" thread, wherein people can sign up to be on a list of people looking to buy one? Then the kind souls like Wunderful over here who may be able to snag more than one can sell for like, $10 over retail plus shipping for their trouble? Or maybe even suggest that people put a bit of money towards the site, to pay it forward?

  • ^^^ lets see how many I can get first, if I can even get one and IF they end up being scarce. God I hope they just make enough for everyone its really stupid.

I agree. They can also shove the Switch and any other future products right up their asses directly behind the NES Classic.

Emulators have worked for me the last 20 years.....These really have 0 appeal to me to begin with.

    Piss on em.

I think that space is already too heavily occupied by their own head.

Really? I saw a whole rack of them and passed on it (mainly because I prefer four-to-six face buttons and two-to-four shoulder buttons). D'oh!
  • Add me to the list of people who would buy from someone on NA for a small markup for shipping.

There has been no shortage of 3rd party knockoffs made to look exactly like the original. Even GameStop retail employees were directing people to a counterfeit on their own website which was listed as "NES Classic Edition Controller" with no picture of the packaging. The only tell was a tiny glimpse of the cord that showed it was white instead of black. You either saw some of these or a bunch of controllers were made for the final shipment. I was expecting to finally see controllers with the final US shipment because Australia finally saw controllers with their final shipment, but I can't get those inventory tracking websites to tell me anything about it.

Edit: Also, considering that you mentioned USB for a future SNES version, the USB knockoffs of NES and SNES controllers have been all over for more than a decade and don't work with the NES CE either.

I think I remember doing this when Skyward Sword launched and was sold out everywhere. I picked up three of them at full retail price, sold them all...and THEN I got super lucky and picked up an entire case of them, and not only that got them at clearance price I think 6, or 8 of them? Sold them for Cost + Tax + Shipping.

I think the clearance price was a Target employee was buddy with a scalper and planted them there. I remember them being pretty well hidden still inside the shipping box.
  • I will go into this with the exact same mindset as the NES Mini.
    • I refuse to wait in line or camp out to get one
    • I refuse to pay more than MSRP for one
    • I refuse to pre-order one
If I can walk into a store on my lunch break and pickup one up for MSRP, I will buy it.  Otherwise, I won't own one.  That's how I was able to get my NES Mini.

Really, the only thing that bothers me about this is that there will inevitably be more complaining and spam posts about scalpers.  Honestly, I find the complaining to be much worse than the actual scalpers.  I can ignore the scalpers pretty easily.  I find it difficult to get away from the complaining.

That's interesting. This was legit though.

In fact it was right next to a stack of official NES Classic Minis.

  • Was this recent enough to have come with the final shipment?
