Remember how everyone called the original PlayStation "PSX" before Sony retconned it as "PSone?" Well, they later released a PS2-powered DVR that could play games, record television, and export to PSP. They called THAT the "PSX."
For the record, I never called the PS1 the PSX. I always thought that was a dumb name.
Sony originally hinted that they would be releasing a series of upgrades and expansions almost yearly, like we'd be on PS9 by 2004 and they would all be reverse compatible and upgradable to the next hardware level. I knew people who defended their purchase decision because their PlayStation would be a PlayStation 5 by the year 2000 and they wouldn't have to buy a new system.
So true, all are horrible choices in my opinion. The Gamecube and Xbox both sound like early alpha/beta codenames that would surely get changed later. Nope, they somehow stuck.
It's funny because the actual codenames for new consoles usually sound pretty cool (I strongly prefer the name "Nintendo NX" to "Nintendo Switch" for the most recent example), then they switch it to something that almost everyone universally agrees sounds stupid.
When the annoucement was first made over the final name of the Wii U (and probably the Wii as well) at some Nintendo corporate meeting, I'll bet half the smiling businessmen in the room were secretly cringing inside. They sound to me like console names decided upon by one man who everyone is afraid to offer any constructive criticism to lol.
I actually hated the NX name. Switch may not be my favorite console name, but it's a thousand times better than NX. I hated the Wii name when I first heard it, but after the marketing campaing for it, I began to understand it and like it better. However, the Wii U name was terrible. Xbox never bothered me, but I wasn't a fan of Xbox 360 and Xbox One has to be the number one dumbest console name ever given. Outside of the Master System, Sega probably has the best list of console names (including their portables). They sounded good back in the day, and they sound good now. The Jaguar was another cool console name. It's just too bad the system never really lived up to the name.
I was on board for the "Nintendo NX". I figured the X would mean "cross" meaning it's a hybrid that you can use in multiple configurations. I thought it was simple and smart, but the Switch isn't the worst name ever. I wholeheartedly agree with Sega console names being the best. The Genesis, 32X, Game Gear, Saturn, Dreamcast all sound pretty cool to me. Also always like the names "Panasonic Real 3DO" and "Turbografx 16".
No, the Wii U was definitely the worst name they could have picked. It sounds like an add-on to the Wii. Mind you, the name "Wii" wasn't much better either. I think the "Nintendo Revolution" would have been a way cooler name...but maybe that's just me.
Yes, precisely. Give it a name that makes it sound like a step forward! The Nintendo Revolution would be a great name, or even something like the Nintendo Future. They could have named it anything they wanted in the whole world, and somehow they settled on calling it the Wii U. Baffling. Is there a single person here who doesn't think that is an awful name?
Going back to the Switch name, actually just calling it the Nintendo Hybrid would have also been pretty cool imo.
Great another systems I'll never be able to get my hands on. Just what I needed.
Seriously what a crapfest. I'll probably never get a NES Classic now unless I want to pay out the ass via a god damn reseller (who's probably sitting on a pile of them...ugh). I see the same thing happening to this thing if it's true.
I didn't care about the NES mini, but the SNES mini might get a bite from me, especially to own an official USB SNES controller :9
Actually ... I may just buy the controller separate.
That' was my plan with the Nes Mini... it didn't work out. I've never even seen an extra controller for sale.
Yep. I planned to buy a bunch to refurb original NES controllers. Never saw a single one. Even compared to the NES CE itself, the stand-alone $10 MSRP controller was unobtanium. Also, it used the Wii/Wii U connector and compatibility (literally had the same electronics as a Wii Classic Controller Pro), so a I wouldn't assume that they're going with USB this time around either.
Really? I saw a whole rack of them and passed on it (mainly because I prefer four-to-six face buttons and two-to-four shoulder buttons). D'oh!
There has been no shortage of 3rd party knockoffs made to look exactly like the original. Even GameStop retail employees were directing people to a counterfeit on their own website which was listed as "NES Classic Edition Controller" with no picture of the packaging. The only tell was a tiny glimpse of the cord that showed it was white instead of black. You either saw some of these or a bunch of controllers were made for the final shipment. I was expecting to finally see controllers with the final US shipment because Australia finally saw controllers with their final shipment, but I can't get those inventory tracking websites to tell me anything about it.
That's interesting. This was legit though.
In fact it was right next to a stack of official NES Classic Minis.
That's exactly where they place the unlicensed knock offs.
In my opinion, these are basically counterfeits and I don't know why they aren't getting sued by Nintendo.
Cool. Hope this works out. I'm going to leave my Nes Classic with just the NES library on it then and hopefully the SNES mini gets cracked pretty fast so I can throw the library on that. Looking forward to this if true.
Nintendo, how about just go all in on the Switch this holiday season? Make sure it is marketed well and well stocked to get a good install base early on so that it will gain support and have some legs.
Don't want to see a repeat of the WiiU, where it tripped right out the gate and just limped along before being taken out behind the wood shed.
For any one in Canada that's close to an EB Games, the in store pre-orders are almost always a sure bet. Even if they have 8 units, most people typically aren't paying too much attention to pre-order days, so if you go just before open you're gonna get one. I got 95% of my amiibos that way, NES mini, BoTW Master Edition, etc. all without issue or wasting time camping out for hours. Unfortunately not everyone is going to be able to get out of work or live close enough to one to make this possible. Finding this stuff online these days is ridiculous with scripts and sites like Reddit watching these site's every move. As soon as this stuff is listed now it's gone within minutes, if that, scheduled or non-scheduled.
Scalpers have nothing to lose. You have at least 30 days to evaluate the market and can simply return the product if the market gets flooded. Nintendo is a scalpers wet dream these days. I'm also starting to wonder if Nintendo is signing deals with Walmart and Amzaon as they hold these items hostage behind their products. Walmart was bundling NES classics with TVs etc, and Amazon was restricting them to Prime members only. I think that practice should be illegal.

I'm a Prime member and there was never any chance of getting one from Amazon. You'd need to live in a major metropolitan area with the "Amazon Prime NOW" service.
Those forced bundles at Amazon and Walmart were from third-party sellers. Gamestop/EB/SoftwareEtc has been guilty of forced bundles for almost 20 years. I had a forced bundle when I bought my Gamecube at launch. They forced bundles with the GC Controller adapter for Wii U. They forced bundles for NES Classic Edition. It's ridiculous...

While I mostly agree with you, I was able to snag one from Amazon as a prime member. It's all about the timing and being quick to react. However, it sold out in minutes of course.
I read an article that stated because Nintendo hates giving their customers what they want and absolutely detest making money, they've already scrapped the SNES Classic and are working on a Wii Virtual console for the Switch.

Agree. I also got one from Amazon and ended up selling it to a member here.
Had to be a prime memeber and had to be lucky enough to catch it when i did.

Was it through Prime Now or regular stock?
Regular stock.
I've never seen regular inventory restricted to Prime only. What does that even look like? Prime Now is the only way I was aware of that they restricted things to Prime members only, and they were definitely restricting it to Prime Now at the very first restock.
They had them through regular Prime. I actually missed out once. I wasn't a Prime member and didn't want to sign up for Prime. While I was talking to my wife about it, it sold out. It was definitely just Prime and not the Now service.
I've never seen regular inventory restricted to Prime only. What does that even look like?
It just says Prime members only. When you go to checkout, i imagine you would get an error message or an offer to sign up for prime to get your item if you are not.
I always have prime, so to me it looked no different than any other item. But nothing anywhere about Prime Now or anything like that, and i live in NH, not a busy area.
Ebay scalpers rejoice! Nintendo can pretty well just shove this thing directly up their collective asses as far as I'm concerned. After their handling of the NES Classic I'll pass.
I agree. They can also shove the Switch and any other future products right up their asses directly behind the NES Classic.
I think that space is already too heavily occupied by their own head.
I don't know about that since their a company full of airheads where their brains should be.
I wasn't really a fan of the original. It was neat I suppose but I prefer the real thing. Besides it strikes me odd they cut production to the NES Classic so quickly.

It was never officially called that here.

My goal is to buy as many as possible and hook up NA users that can't get one at retail plus shipping.
The world needs more people like you, my friend.
