Is this my Donkey Kong 64 invoice or my banana controller invoice?

In the original ad for the Nintendo Power bundle that included the DK64 banana controller, Nintendo very clearly mentions two different bundles but only defines one: The Jungle Pak. I'm pretty sure that's what I ordered as I recall it being much more expensive than the typical subscription price at the time.

I sold my original DK64 controller 100% unused in early 2015. I never even took off the bag or twist tie. I did, however, keep a second one that I found used years later.

Now, I also recall ordering a copy of DK64 directly from Nintendo. I think it was because I already had an Expansion Pak. I called to complain that the game was not available new without the Expansion Pak and they suggested a "refurb" copy, which I highly suspect was brand new (too soon in the product's life for returns to filter through; probably labeled such to avoid competing with retail partners through direct sales). IIRC, it had a white rectangular label with red text across the back of the shell above the care label. I'm pretty sure I traded it off last year because I have other CIB copies.

Anyway, I was digging up my old Power Supplies catalogs recently when I found the manual and paperwork for that refurb copy in the same box. I also found an old invoice of mine for a "PAK, DK64 JUNGL" from Nintendo, again, in that same box. The price of $20.05 does not seem to reflect the "Jungle Pak" that included the controller, Player's Guide, and Nintendo Power subscription, but it also seems too cheap to be DK64 barely a month after it launched. Nintendo still called all of their games "Game Paks" back then, so "PAK" is not distinguishing enough. The date is just past when I should have reupped my subscription to avoid missing an issue, but I was often a bit late and had to get my last issue sent as a back issue. "JUNGL" may refer to the game being special edition yellow during a period when they would not have known that a gray version without the Expansion Pak might be in the cards, or it could even be a vestigial name in their system when the game might have had a subtitle or something, so I can't conclusively say that makes it my DK64 controller invoice.

Does anyone else have a DK64 controller invoice or a "refurb" game pak invoice that I can compare to?

  • Can't answer your question, but I was just wondering which NP that ad came from? I wouldn't mind getting one framed or something to sit next to my controller
  • That's a scan I found online, though the invoice/refurb docs pic is mine. I think it was in a few different issues if it wasn't a direct-mail promo. I recall it being on the inside of the front cover. Mine aren't organized but if I can find them I'll take a look at a few leading up to the February 2000 expiration date. It's probably Nov/Dec '99 since the controller and guide book don't show final designs and those issues were being laid out well before the publication month (guide ultimately had all the Kongs in a cart; controller ultimately shortened "Donkey Kong 64" to just "DK64").

After some thought I'm going to assume that the invoice is for the controller. At some point the typical guide plus subscription offer was $19.95, and $40-$19.95=the $20.05 price we see. Now I just need to look back and see when the typical subscription price bumped up to $21.95.
  • Man, $20.05 was a great deal considering that controllers were still $35 in stores. I wonder if they would have allowed me to increase the quantity at $20.05 each! I never found them for less than $30 until the N64 stuff was on clearance at a media store well after the GCN launched and even then I paid $25 each.
