I can't recall if I've messaged you this, or if I just thought about it. We're going on 3 months now and eBay is still, apparantly, giving you the runaround. I'ved used Kistarter for one project and I don't do Patreon. However, in this case, I'd gladly contribute some cash for your services. So far you've done everything out of your pocket. I'd gladly contribute to a revenue stream so that we can get the API flowing again.

Hey guys! I wish this was an option. Ebay does not charge or accept any form of payment for their API use. I have asked :-(. At this point eBay still says that they are reviewing their API's and anyone who is currently being reviewed has to wait until the review is complete. This is single handedly the most frustrating experience I have ever dealt with in my life. At this point my hands are tied and I am simply trying to find someone at eBay who has some decensy to look into our situation and give us access back.
They are about to overhaul their entire inventory system and search to a catalog approach. Its probably going to eff everything up. Ive seen samples of it with their grouped listing feature. It is literal ass. It is a carbon copy of amazon but feels like its a mess. Its like if amazon was an unorganized garage sale. Their catalog isnt accurate and it messes everything up.
Just checked out your site for the first time. Some questions, do you only look at eBay sales and not Amazon? Is there only data up until last year? Will you include prices for limited edition things like controllers, systems, or club Nintendo stuff? I was looking for an obscure Gundam char controller to see what you had it valued at but didn't see it come up.

Ebay only, Amazon doesnt matter. Data starts from when the website started recording (May 2016?) As long as an item sells and is listed as such special edition of an item, it seems to show up on the site. The Gundam controller pry hasnt sold on ebay in the past 2 years, and that may be why it isnt listed yet. I am just giving answers as a huge follower of GVN, and these answers are not those of Hogie, or anyone else directly involved.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info. Any reason why Amazon sales aren't counted? Is it just harder to track? Amazon has a massive market and I've seen other price chart sites include Amazon sales.

It is an absolute shit show indeed. All they had to do was continue to be the best auction site they could be and they would kill it. Instead they are trying to be something they are not.

Mainly due to volume. eBay is the largest market place for buying and selling video games, therefore it offers the most comprehensive data for observation. We could pull in Amazon sales, but in my experience, many listings do not include an image and or the description of the game is not to our standards for determining "completeness" of a game. It has been awhile since I have looked into it though.

Just a quick clarification on this, is it yes to collecting past 5 months of data, or yes that there will be a gap? I'm assuming the former.
As frustrating as its been just wanted to say I understand what you are dealing with here and my frustration is not directed towards you. Best of luck dealing with Ebay.
Once the ebay thing is sorted what sort of things could we see added?
I like that theres hardware accessories and variants of both, I imagine its going to be an expanding list as time goes on. I didn't see the Zelda 3ds xl or the sharp nes tv.

Have you thought about just creating a new API account and moving the IP of your domain so that you can continue to update GVN while this horrible long process continues to extend? Or just using a basic proxy or middleman box to gather the data?
GVN has always been my favorite and everyone keeps telling me to stop using it
Shouldn't really be using GVN for price checking at the moment. Its over 5 months out of date at this point.
That depends if you're buying or selling
And which market. Some markets are mature and non-volitile and 5 months is a very small sample period which would not skew prices more than a percentage or so. As an example, the nintendo test equipment/cartridge market has greatly exploded in the last year, so 5 months could mean 30-50% price variance. But for regular NES? Not very much. Also what time period it covers. For example pre/post tax season see's variance in prices and its normal for this to flucuate annually.

Yeah that's true. But you still never know for sure and will feel the need to check other sources.
For instance if some outside factor spikes the price of a game, like an AVGN video or a Hollywood movie like Rampage.

Is there good documentation of this effect? I've seen this same exact thing cause 10x + spikes in comic books, but not games?

Yeah you can see it by just viewing the price graph on Price Charting of affected games. For example look what's happening to Rampage on NES currently. Its nearly doubled in price over the past month since the movie came out. Same with Adventure on Atari 2600 because of Ready Player One.

Yep, there are many examples of this happening over the years, especially by YouTube reviewers and ocassionally someone trying to artificially drive up a price on purpose. They usually come down after a huge spike, but they never get back down to what they were at previously from what I've seen.

Yeah, Krazy Kreatures (I know this as I occasionally window shop for that one) went from under $10 to over $30. About six months to a year later it settled to $15-$20. That one is pretty condition dependent given AVE's garbage labels, but still a significant price movement.
With all this downtime waiting on eBay it would seem like this is a good time to work on some other updates for the collection tracker. I would love to see the ability to define your own set implemented soon.
No matter what happens, I am a huge fan of the GVN collection tracker. All of the teams hard work and dedication is evident in the great quality of the site.
I won't give up hope on Hoagie but after speaking directly with him and doing a bit of additional research, there really isn't anything Hoagie can do, or us. I think the API is a half-assed piece of BS that eBay doesn't care much about. If you need an increase in calls to their databases, you basically have to zip the code to your site up and send it to them. Thet then "verify" that it's optimized (in other words, it's not needlessly asking for a bunch of data) and then determine to give you the increase.
The thing is, it seems that the third-party that manages the API doesn't care, at all, about peoples projects. My gut tells me that eBay unloaded this on a third party so they wouldn't have to deal with irrate devs begging for an increase when no really good revenue stream presents itself. However, sites that seem to drive a LOT of traffic to eBy that converts to real sales are given extra access.
Definitely, GVN drums up business for eBay but, again, I'm guessing they are aware of PeiceCharting, so this is just competition for them. Plus, they may even be able to look at conversions to actual sales from PC and simply think it's not worth the effort and cost to allow a new tool like GVN to have extra access.
Of course, they aren't saying any of this. At the moment, there is no one at "eBay" that we can communicate with and this project is indefinitely stuck in limbo. An alternative I've considered is creating my own data exporter and seeing if I can highly scrutinize my data calls to see if I can get the data under the 5,000 calls-per-day limit. I think Hoagie's account is locked (though I might have misunderstood). If I can basically get all of the sales data for everything in the "Video Games" category, I'll freely share my queries with Hoagie or if his account is locked, basically dump the data and provide a pipeline for him to pull the raw data from my tool.
I didn't tell him this directly about my thoughts though, and he might not be interested if he thinks this could get him banned if eBay felt this was in breach of terms. I'd like to do this but I'm a pro developer who rarely has time for any of my coding side projects. This is a high priority for me because I selfishly want GVN back online, but I've had the idea on my mind for at least a few weeks now and I've not even had the time to fire up my dev tools and start stubbing out a shell application.
That said, there's just not much any of us can do unless someone else is a pretty solid dev and wants to try what I'm suggesting.
