I wish people would separate morality from storm chasing.

Why do we need a big soap opera, or some huge disclaimer specifying that we possess basic empathy every time? Not to mention, that disclaimer is usually only said to assuage public misunderstanding of what storm chasing is anyway, typically with little positive results. So what if I like storms? Do I have to justify that interest to others? You could make the argument that my opinion would change if I actually lost someone to storms, but even if it did, that still doesn't make the blatant freaking out and show of self-righteousness by the masses justified, because more people believing something doesn't make it valid.

I'm probably the only person on NA that's actually passionate about weather except for one other guy I know that doesn't post here anymore, but this is a hot issue for me, and I wanted to see what you guys think. I feel like at least a couple people here should have something interesting to say about this.

  • I'm not saying we shouldn't have empathy, I'm saying that I'm not going to proclaim it to everyone whenever I chase just to appeal to the masses when the masses aren't even listening anyway. Unless you're a complete asshole, everyone has empathy. This doesn't even need to be said. I can't remember the last time I've seen any weather disaster that hasn't been publicized by an afterthought comment like "Oh, and we don't want anyone to die." Uh, no shit?

The people who dickwave morality into your face come off as thinking that chasers are evil or something, even though we're not. It's really, really annoying.
  • You da man.
  • Your sarcasm is appreciated, but I'm trying to have a legitimate discussion here. If I just wanted to dick-wave, I would've said so.

  • I mean, you probably have a better chance of dying in an auto accident than chasing a storm so I say go for it. Some times a guys gota chase a storm.
  • I don't know first hand what you are talking about, but I can only assume a lot of people find it in poor taste when you are getting excited about an event that is wrecking other peoples lives.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. The only purpose of them telling you that is to act like they are morally superior. How is that not annoying?

Glad you quickly edited this because that was a dumb ass comment.

  • Yeah, no offense, but your post in the past seemed like you were seeking attention and now they seems only to be starving for attention. Like, I'm even trying to figure out why this is a separate thread.

You aren't the only one passionate about storms, however, when people are losing families and homes, I could care less about how awesome a storm looks. You aren't a storm chaser...you are a person who likes to chase storms.

I edited it because I realized that I couldn't objectively call that kind of moral dick-waving as immoral. It's kind of amoral by definition.

I believe what smokinjoe24 is saying is that there's a major difference.

If you are chasing a storm with high tech equipment and instruments to track and analyze a storm to help notify people or get detailed information about a storm (to better help warn people) then you're a "storm chaser". I'm assuming there's a ton of data that these people get, analyze, and then use to furher predict storms and help people in heavily affected areas.

If your chasing a storm because you're trying to get "cool" pictures, then you're a dumbass and simply a person who likes to chase storms.

Also, didn't some person die not too long ago doing something like this? Just some random dude following a twister? ... In that case, what empire said. That dude got REKT by that tornader.

Personally, I think if you're not a professional like noted above, and you get hurt/die "chasing" said storm, then you're a dumbass and that qualifies you for the Darwin Awards.
  • I agree that if you intentionally put yourself in harm's way and then die, you deserved it. I hereby give everyone here permission to publicly defame me if I ever die that way. I do take the appropriate safety precautions when I chase, though... as much as I can, at least. But nature could still kill me.

And yes, I chase for thrills. And no I'm not sorry. Storms are awesome, and even if you work for an organization that specializes in storm chasing, you still can't remove that aspect of it from yourself. Let's not wiggle around an inherent human quality, here.
  • I also enjoy the rain.

    These things happen quickly.
  • People always think they're experts. Then they get their asses kicked.

I've seen your many threads on weather. You're in it for the wrong reasons, and it'll catch up to you. You don't know as much as you think you know. I'd worry more about renting your own apartment.

Also, isn't there some self-indulgent storm chasing forum you could hit up instead of a video game site?

  • Ok. I officially don't care if you die. Also
