Can you explain why this is one of the more well-known copies, is there a story behind this copy?
It's been in collector hands for a long time. There are pics and discussion of it here way back.
Ah ok, was hoping there was some sort of cool story behind it about how (or why) the head got cut off.
If I had to guess, some kid defaced it because it was a sucky game. That kid probably moved on from NES long ago and has no idea the cart he defaced is worth so much. Kids only care about the good stuff. Crappy stuff is crap, so it makes sense only the sucky games get defaced...
If I was ten, I would doodle on a Dr Jeckle and Mr Hyde, but play the hell out of Mario 3 for instance.
It's so hard to guess a fair value on this. Would it be insulting to say this is in the $5000 range? I feel like it you're going to pay $7000+ you may as well just pay $$8000 - $9000 and find a mint condition cart.

I think this is 100% correct. The smoking gun is the fact that the leads on the chip look like they've barely ever been pushed into an NES. My guess is this thing's been played no more than 10 times in it's entire life time.
Off note, I am interested in this. Going to send a PM, but don't get your hopes up.
