Danger Will Robinson!

Colorado weather along the front range (the area close to the foothills/mountains) is odd - one area can get hit by rain, sleet or hail and you go a few blocks and there is little or nothing.  Up until today our house has always managed to dodge the bullet.

It had looked rather gloomy out (with predictions of scattered rain showers) so I put the Rav4 in the garage.  About a minute later it started hailing in ernest (if not the proverbial golfball size close enough that the difference was moot).  We lost five large skylights on the house and three small ones on two of  the outbuildings.  And some plastic gutters on at least one of the outbuildings got destroyed.

As soon as it stopped hailing I went to the hardware store to get some tarps (figuring there would be a run on them - as was indeed the case - I was the second person there getting them and six people came in for them while I was getting the ones I needed - while I was in the checkout line 7 more people came in and asked where the tarps were).

I didn't notice any real damage to the roof while I was putting the tarps over the skylights - but I wasn't focused on that while I got soaking wet.  And I am not a roofing person - the insurance company will be sending out an inspector to look at it.

It looks like replacing the skylights will be pretty easy - it looks like about $100 each for the large skylights if I do it myself - looks pretty easy from what I can tell.

So, like, how was your day?

  • Wow. That's crazy, Natty.

I've only been in hail that big once. I was pretty young, and it was a family vacation. The hail was bigger than a golf ball for sure, some pushed close to tennis ball size. Of course, all the kids were stunned by it, so my grandpa decides to go outside and grab some to bring in for us to look at. I still remembering him shouting, "Ow! Ow!" as he went around trying to find pieces that hadn't broken. It was insane!

Sorry about the skylights, but I'm glad to hear that the repairs shouldn't be too bad. Best of luck getting those fixed and having the insurance pay out.
  • Make sure to use only your local roofing companies for any work you get done. We get hail a few times a year out here and the scammers are always out in force for a couple weeks after. They will put business cards on your door and put their signs out around your neighborhood. The trick with skylights is making sure they don't leak. They fit under the shingles around so I would leave it up to pros if you've never installed them before. With the damage to skylights, water damage, possible damage to other shingles you may be able to get a good claim in on your insurance. Sometimes your local guys will work with you and bid the job a little high then do the whole job for what you get from your insurance after your deductible is taken out.
  • We've had snow, rain, wind, hail, 80° weather all within a span of a week. That's why I love it here.
  • The insurance adjustor was just here. We are getting new roofs on the house, garage, and the five outbuildings. Plus some new gutters, facia , a lot of trim, painting where needed and coverage for some of the yard lights (solar and low voltage) and pots. And of course the eight skylights. And the money I spent on the tarps to cover the skylights. And a new grill cover (a freestanding metal one). And a new garage door. Probably some other things I am forgetting.

My deductible is $1500 so I don't feel too bad about it all - the roof is at least 15 years old so replacing it is not as bad as it might seem (by my lights).

Exactly this.  I would definitely go local if for no other reason so they can make adjustments/repairs if something is wrong with how they do it.

I made the mistake of using one of the portable 'paintless dent repair' companies for my vehicle after hail rolled through.  They missed a bunch on the back, and when I called them out on it they claimed that those were "luggage dents".

  • On my phone i saw the thread title and knew exactly who made it lol

You and andy are probably the only people thats doable with.

Just thought id share that lol.
  • Yeah, that hail was pretty crazy. My dad lives about a mile from the Colorado Mills mall that is shut down until November for repairs. He is getting a new roof and siding for the house. I live about 5 miles north of him and we had your average pea sized hail with no damage at all.

Same here.   Although with Natty's threads, it's like sitting down for a nice scotch with one of your uncles.   With Andy, we all just think "Oh Andy..."

  • What an awesome and now-forgotten reference to Lost in Space in the thread title. Cheers Natty

What does it say about me that my favorite character on that show was Dr.  Smith?  The robot was cool too.
