If your family is cared for, and you are putting away the right amount of cash for savings and retirement, you should not feel bad about spending a grand on yourself here and there.
this is so true, and so important. Not enough people take RETIREMENT into account. at some point youre gonna wanna stop working.
I've heard a few people say "my collection is my retirement fund" and to that i say why? why would you bank on selling something that you could sit all day and do for fun to fund hte portion of your life where you can sit all day and do stuff for fun?! you should be putting retirement first so you can play games during your retirement. and drugs. do alot of drugs. but only once you hit 80.
ok for real don't do drugs. or do. what do i look like wally the bear? I didn't found a gang dedicated to saying no.
I totally agree with Archs comment earlier. Now if your stash is bothering you my suggestion is A leave it be and keep adding to it or B say screw it and draw it out and treat the family to something awesome. ...or there is C send it to me and I'll lay waste to it rather swiftly on things I didn't know existed but can't possibly live without.
this thread is giving me some nasty deja vu, including use of the tern "squirreled away" and the figure of 1k. Weird.
As for my spending habits, if I've saved for a purchase, I don't feel iffy about it at all. It's one thing to impulse spend, but it's another to hold on to a little money left over from taking care of the necessities and when it finally adds up, letting it go.
I have three acccounts: Bills, Emergency, and "fun money". The last one isn't exactly what it says on the tin, since I sometimes spend " fun money" on investments, but making money is fun so technically...
I'm sure it's a different feeling with kids or even with a husband/wife who doesn't share your passion for the hobby. Good thing I'm staying away from kids. Hell with Disney World.
I only feel guilty when I spend a LOT of money in a short time span. If I buy a game here or there, I feel I deserve it because I work my ass off at 2 jobs and I should have some of that money for spending. But I feel bad when I spend like $300+ in a week.
I never feel guilty about a purchase but I personally feel like video games have become the next gold, and personally I think prices are way too expensive these days. Hell even 7 years ago Collecting Nes games felt like an affordable hobby but now a days things are much more expensive and it feels more like one would need some serious cash to complete a set. I have love for my collection. But I can't see spending tens of thousands of dollars on it at the moment to complete it especially when I have other goals in mind. I look at collecting games as a very long term goal and enjoy finding pieces for my collection for cheap, or trading others for the items I need. Collecting games today feels more like an investment "Even though I know it's not" especially when a game can cost as much as a car. What would I rather have, money tucked away for retirement, or buy some land here in Montana or have a 30k dollar game just sitting on my shelf. Well if I found a $30,000 game for cheap then I would feel fine about it but not so much if I had to actually shell out the cash for it at the moment. With all of that said, the great thing about money is the ability to earn more of it. Spending cash on that rare piece that you have been looking for forever and the fact that it may not show up again for a long ass time. Then by all means buy it.
Most of the money I've "blown" on collectibles from comics to Magic cards to pinball/arcade to video games has paid back equal and usually more when it came time to sell. I've regretted not buying something 100 times more than buying something. Big ticket in demand stuff is easy to sell if it comes to it.
Side note, is land in montana goin for a good price? I always imaged buying land there and starting up a lil place would lead to some lovely views. ya know cause the general perception of montana is that theres a ton of open land so I imagine that would be easy to do.
Not cheap but it's all about what kind of land, where you buy it at, and what it comes with. Does it have the water and mineral rights to the land you buying or not etc. I have aunts in Oregon who are looking at buying much cheaper land then I am looking at buying. But I wouldn't want to live in Oregon again. Montana is just so beautiful and I want a nice beautiful piece of property and I know I am gonna have to pay for it but I know it will be worth it to go hunting and four wheeling and have some recreational time on. I am looking at 20-60 or more acreas though, not like an acre or 2.

Property around Bozeman is too expensive you can find much better prices in other areas of Montana, plus I don't want to live around that area it's just growing way to fast with too many people. Nice property is gonna be costly anyway and I want to buy land to get away from people and someday build a home on.
I generally try not to spend big money on my collection. The most expensive purchase for me in years was the switch launch. I typically can't talk myself into spending hundreds of dollars on games monthly. Don't get me wrong, I totally want to but my money isn't funny enough to just drop it like that.

That all makes total sense. I bet montana is beautiful. I would be wanting at least 10 to 20 myself. plenty of room for some animals and a go kart track. haha.
Part of the reason I'm not married or have kids is I like my money more. If I made $200k a year it would be a different story. I have no guilt dropping a couple hundred on a game if I feel inclined to do so.
My biggest fear has always been child support. I've seen what my family and friends go through with that shit. My buddies ex wife had the nerve to go in front of a judge and tell him she needed more money she needs a new car. He was already paying $300 a week and she wanted more.
If your family is cared for, and you are putting away the right amount of cash for savings and retirement, you should not feel bad about spending a grand on yourself here and there.
This.
If your self + family things are squared away, and you have a passion to add to your collection, then I don't see the problem.
Life is WAY too short as others have said. You've got to do what makes you happy, and if building a game collection does just that... go for it IMO.
I know that I have trouble making large purchases. A grand at once on one item, I quiver at the thought! Yet, I could piddle it all away in a month on smaller crap that I could care less for down the road (PS2 games that I'll never play, something for a "deal," random junk thrift store finds, whatever). I hate when I do that. Spend big and boldly, knowing that it's actually what you want!
I don't have a family to support so take what I say with that in mind.
If you worked hard to save up that money, then go ahead and spend it on yourself. Maybe set aside a little bit to treat the wife and kids to a nice dinner or get them a little gift...just so you don't feel totally guilty.
Then again I've never dropped that much on games...I did drop that much on computer parts to build myself a new PC but...that was a BIG important and needed item. I didn't feel guilty...but I felt bad since I didn't want to spend that much! I'm a cheapskate and damn it took me a long time to save up that much...and it's taken even longer to get back to where I actually have a little bit saved up at the end of the month...so far two months after the build...still haven't managed to save any money...I really need to. But on SSI it's just not possible...I'm going to have to sell stuff to make some extra cash to set aside and NOT TOUCH EVEN FOR LRGs. LRGs is my weakness I know...and limited editions of games. Ugh. They cost so much and they just keep coming out...I can't keep up with it.
The OP reminds me of something that happened to me. When I was around 18 and still living at home with my folks, I didn't have any money saved or nothing, never really made enough for the money to matter much anyway so I spent it. This was around 2005 or so when HDTV was a thing and the 360 was out, so I decided I was gonna save up and buy a big new TV and the 360 to go with it. Well, it turns out it only took me a couple months to save a whole grand, I never knew how easy it was to save because I never tried (as I say I was living with parents so I had no expenditures to speak of)!
However, after I had saved a grand so quickly, I felt it would be silly to just blow it straight away. I never bought that TV or the 360, and kept saving and spending virtually nothing on myself, and by the time I left home I was set! This was about 10 years ago now, and of course now I am married with kids so saving is not so easy, lol, but I never forgot the lessons I learned and to this day I am a tightass mofo!
Yet, I could piddle it all away in a month on smaller crap that I could care less for down the road (PS2 games that I'll never play, something for a "deal," random junk thrift store finds, whatever).
yeah I used to be the same way. In hindsight, it makes way more sense to just spend a chunk on the one thing you want, and forget all that other crap nobody wants
When my son was born my priorities changed. I haven't bought anything for my collection since he was born. I picked up a homebrew here and there, and some other small stuff, but nothing I wouldn't spend on a weekend out with the guys. It isn't so much guilt as it is that our money, and perhaps more aptly my attention, has been diverted elsewhere.
It's been just the opposite of me. I hadn't really started collecting until my son was born. I didn't realize how much prices had gone up for NES games. I just assumed that all of them were cheap. So now I'm trying to buy all of them I can do that as my kid gets older we can both play them together.
I've squirreled away about $1K over the last few months. Now a thousand dollars may not seems like a lot of money to some of you but I'm not the kind of dude who can just blow $1K whenever he feels like it. I've got to save and budget that shit.
So now I've got this money and I can't pull the trigger on a collection purchase. I keep thinking about all the cool shit i could buy for my wife, or my daughters, or both. Or fuck, I could donate that money. I don't know, it sounds stupid, but I've had this cash ready to go for like 2 months and I can't bring myself to spend it.
It feels selfish. My wife has never spent a thousand dollars on herself. My daughters have never gotten a thousand dollars worth of...anything.
But it's not like I've neglected my family. Over the last 18 months I've spent close to $15K on vacations. But that's not exactly selfless, you know? I wanted to go on those vacations as much as they did.
I don't fucking know. Maybe I'm just being a pussy.
Anyone else have this problem?
I think 15k in vacations is way to much personally and my wife would think so also but we don't own a house yet.
Back to the question no guilt. I worked hard to have life were I can maybe spend 4 thousand in a month on gaming. I still get the bills paid just don't go out partying. This is my vice I guess but I don't see it that way really.

I agree $15K is a lot to spend on vacations. But keep in mind that was over 18 months. Also it's not like i dropped it all at once. It took several months of saving.
We've got 2 other trips we're taking this year and already have one trip paid for. We don't make a ton of money. My wife is just great about budgeting it.
Also we never touch our savings account for vacations or stupid collection purposes.

Lol savings aren't meant to be touched. I haven't spent 15 k on vacations my entire life and I did a little traveling went to Disney twice.
I've been working since 16 so I've just been working so long it adds up about to turn 28 next month. Plus finding good deals and flipping helps.
