The "NEW" Square Enix games arrived today

Just ordered some Square games on sale and they arrived today.

Each title looks like it came from a different facility. One had folded over corners. One had a wrinkled wrap with large holes here and there. One clearly has scrathes under the plastic. One has a seam going up the back. One has a seam going across the front.

They got rid of that sticker long ago didn't they?

I thougth that any game made after a certain date wouldn't have them.

  • These have been done this way for a long time. Final Fantasy, Anthology, Chrono Cross, etc. These games were intensely popular, and these releases are essentially player's copies, which I don't really think most would have a problem with. If you buy these games off Amazon, you'll get the same results. There's a reason they have been pumping these out for so cheap.
  • I was hesitant about buying games from their sale. Looks like it was warranted. Kind of crappy that they come looking like that.

Sale is over now. They were on sale for 50% off or $7.50 each "new" direct from Square Enix.

Not that big of an issue for us. We were sold out at our store and as long as the discs are mint we will be ok.

  • I ordered a bunch of these during the Square Enix sale as well. Fortunately for me, I was already aware of what I was going to get. But for the prices I paid, I had absolutely no issues with what they sent me.

I've ordered them them before and never had seals that look like this. This is a new low.

Not too bad man, FF titles will always sell.

  • Honestly, I'd still be happy. That price is bonkers for those games.
  • Game stores across the country all of the sudden have mint copies of green label Square PS1 games.
  • Wait! They had PS1 games still for sale? I bought a bunch of DS/3DS. I'd loved to have picked up some PS1 titles. I still need a few Greatest Hits titles to complete my set of all Square games for the PS1.

In all, I bought about 20 games.  Some to keep and others for grading.  I've never had anything graded and this seemed like a good starting lot.

They trot out a batch of these specific PS1 games every few months for about the same price.

  • ...I mean, they are new. They're not "new." They're not resealed or refurbished or anything like that. My understanding is that the discs are silver, too. Clearly just a very very low-budget, cost-saving final run of these games with the cheapest discs and cheapest packaging, probably right before they shut down the PS1 printing presses for good in the mid-2000s.

I've heard people mention these silvered versions.  Anyone know that once the shrinkwrap is removed, is there any way from the case to identify this variation.

I ask because I'm looking to collect all Squaresoft titles for the PS1, including variations.  For these titles, it looks like I'll need to get three variations-- the black label, the first-run Greatest Hits and these cheapos.  I'd like to know if there's a way to ID these without having to ask the sellers.

I believe the first run of the GH version still had Squaresoft on the cover, while these have Square-Enix.

Is it listed on the forums? I need to find a local shop to frequent.

On topic. I never had any issues with the product I got from their sales. Will have to be careful going forward.
  • I bought 1 of each of the PS1 games, and the Kingdom Hearts title for PS2 they had. Pretty disappointed in the condition of the wrap, but for like $7, Ill still send them off to VGA and put them on display.

They'll be mint, and those discs will be silver not black. And yeah no reprinted PS1 game has ever had the holoseal.

I first learned that when I rented FF-VII to switch Disc III with my copy.....How a rented copy was worse than mine I can't explain that.

It didn't match but ehhh Sephiroth had to die.

  • You guys really have no room for complaining. When I ordered some copies that were supposed to be factory sealed, they came in tube socks that were stapled closed.

Not sure but these all have Square Enix n the front. Older greatest hits still have the Squaresoft logo. You might try that.

I mean your name is Tubeway, they probably just thought you liked all your games packaged like that.

Dragonball Z GT Final Bout is one of the few exceptions. It might have a different cover but it's still technically a reprint and had the holoseal.

That doesn't surprise me, DBZ GT was the first "rare" reissue. Atari saw a demand and republished the game. It wasn't really a 'reprint' as the game had new art and a new publisher.  Later GameQuestDirect and Gamestop started capitalizing on the frenzied demand for rare games (like Rhapsody and Persona 2) and ordered new prints directly from Atlus. These didn't bother with hologram seals and were otherwise identical to their original releases.

  • All of these reprints are silver discs and they are contemporary printings. Ordered a case and the manufacture date was only about 2 months prior. There will be no end of reprints as long as they keep selling through their website.

If that is the case then why aren't the 2 most popular titles? They should be selling Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy Tactics.

Where did you see the manufacturing date? On the case, instructions or disc?
