Ok. I'm back. And I'm gonna win!

I'm having trouble with a certain game boss right now. I've decided to walk away for a bit then when ready, take him on again.

I've done this so many times, but sometimes I win on my first attempt back. What took me ages to learn and master, I did with barely any effort. I remember when I needed to beat Mean Bean Machine on the Sega collection to get every Achievement. It was tough as hell, so I set up a saturday where I got ready to listen to a 3 hour podcast, and I was either going to win or the podcast would end and I would leave it for a month.

I beat it on the first try. Took 5 minutes.

Has this ever happened to any of you in a game? Coming back to a boss and walking over them like they were nothing? Maybe not a boss but a challenge or puzzle.

  • Oh for sure man, especially with 8 bit games where the pattern is really memorable.

For example, Dracula in Castlevania I....I fought him once and then came back and whooped his ass no problem, once you practice jumping over his projectiles it makes it easy.

Most difficult games are like that though, you know you are never going to beat the boss the first time it is just studying.
  • Yeah Castlevania.

I made it to Dracula for the first time and probably tried again and again for an hour or two and couldn't do it. I didn't come back to it for like a month or two and did it on my third try
  • yeah, usually I go to bed, wake up the next day and beat it first try

I think you are going through it in your subconscious over and over when sleeping or taking a break and when you come back not frustrated you beat it.
  • I remember ragequitting on the Guardian Legend one day on one of the later bosses. I came back to beat him the day after and he seemed like a pushover
  • Quite common. Rage quit, then return to beat it easily

Dude that bean machine achievement. I used to care a lot about achievements and that one was such a bitch. I had the rest of the game done but couldn't get it. I'm honestly not sure if I ever did. I rarely rage quit on stuff like that but I remember getting really frustrated.
  • I've had this type of thing happen to me a few times but the one in particular I remember happened on the Snow Fortress level of Jungle Strike on Genesis. There was one part towards the end of the level I kept getting creamed over and over. This actually went on for several months though. A few different times I said I'm going to turn this on a beat it today no matter what and got trashed anyway. Finally I reached the point where I was officially going to give up and use a code to skip the level and was just flying around the area I kept getting killed at when I happened across a radar station I had no idea was there and it was a little bit removed from the area. But that thing had been giving a huge defensive bonus to the enemies there. So I easily beat it from that point on. I had tried it so many times before with the radar station still working that I had gotten so good at it I could actually get what I needed from there while losing lives but would die on the verge of getting out.
  • Happens to me alot.

Last year I walked away from DK Tropical Freeze cause it was annoying me and I couldn't beat the last boss.

Come back to it after a 6 or 7 month break and BAM beat it in the first few tries...
  • That was me for Ninja Warriors on SNES. Tried probably 20 times to beat the final boss. Left the game paused for a week, came back and beet it within 10 minutes.
  • I consistently get my best scores in Tetris in the first 2 or 3 runs of a sitting. I have no idea why.
  • No-deathing Contra. Reset the game 30 times while dying in the Energy Zone or something, come back and do it first try.

Also, 3-starring circuits in Mario Kart. You need to finish 1st on all 4 races to get 3 stars. I'll finish 1st/1st/1st/ and then a last-second blue shell will make me come in 2nd on the last course. I'll repeat this for 2 hours, coming 2nd in at least one race. Put it down for the day, come back and 3-star it on the first try.
  • Mine was Bucky o Hare. I can not count how many times I rage quit on the last boss. But I did get good enough I was finally able to beat it with only a half life bar.
