You can get a bare bones everdrive from stone age gamer for a lot cheaper than their premium package. I got a Famicom version (for convenience and audio purposes) in a white shell with red screws, no labels, and a pre formatted 8gb sd for under $120 I believe. It compliments the AV Fami quite nicely. I do use it frequently, I speedrun so the save state is a must for practicing tough spots until I get the muscle memory down. And it is nice to have access to pretty much any game ever released, but I dont use it nearly as much as my NES paired with an og cart.
There's something about having an entire library in one cart that kind of cheapens the experience, for me at least. Totally my opinion, but I feel like it's a little overwhelming, too much too soon. At first, I found myself only playing games for about 20 minutes at a clip, and then just jumping to another title when I found a spot that was difficult to advance through as oppose to toughing it out and beating it.
I have a few hundred carts, and if there's something I want to play/own, I don't play it via everdrive. I wait until I can grab the physical cart, no matter how long it takes. It's a lot more rewarding this way, and I find I have a much better appreciation of the game. Plus I'm a purist and a nostalgia junkie, so for me there's nothing like holding an original cart. The artwork, the way it feels in my hands, even some kids name and old phone number in marker is sometimes appreciated. And the sound it makes when you slide that fucker into a front loader...it's an almost religious experience. Even cleaning them is fun for me. Simply amazing.
But yes, unfortunately you picked a hell of a time to get into the hobby. Gone are the days of walking into your favorite flea market on a Saturday morning, running to your favorite dealer, checking out the wall to wall, floor to ceiling display of $5 NES carts, next to the dragonball z import toys and the sign that says "Playstation mod chip - installation here!!!".
There's no honey holes left for games. Not consistently at least. You have to put the work in and get lucky. That's about all you can do.
But not everyones like me, if you're just starting out, go for the everdrive. Especially if you just want to play the games. You'll love it. See how it feels, and see if it becomes something you can see yourself doing for a while. This is definitely not an instant gratification hobby. You gotta put the work in, but if you do, you'll start making connections, know the where's and when's, etc.
Also, Famicom stuff is a lot cheaper, and for most popular titles, language is irrelevant.
Does the Everdrive play exactly the same as official carts? Even though it's playing on the official hardware, is there any lag?
I feel like buying the ED might cheapen the hobby too, but I've wasted enough in the past few years so an ED makes sense. Is there any good cover art for the Evedrive I can print out? Similar to the ones found on the coverproject website?

As long as the rom that you download is identical to the original, there will be no difference. As far as lag from cart to console, non-existent. That more so depends on the TV you're using. But that's a whole other subject entirely. Stick with a CRT if you're worried about lag. You can get a decent one for free, and a great one for cheap. Very cost efficient and still looks good.

Honestly IMO you have the right idea. I think a lot of new collectors would be better off in the long run if they make an Everdrive their first purchase. It can take hundreds of dollars getting a NES or SNES collection going with must-have titles. You see new people rolling through the community on a buying frenzy, get remorse & panic, then sell everything off on eBay for market price and leave the hobby. Buying an ED right from the start for your personal gaming needs and approaching real cart/CIB/sealed collecting in a controlled and measured way is much more sustainable.
I've had the NES and SNES for decades, it was only until a few years ago that I decided to buy universal game cases for them along with printing out their cover art. Started buying a few more games here and there during the past 5-10 years and added another 30 these past 2 years. I noticed that games have gotten so much more expensive the past few years though. I bought 100 universal game cases and that alone almost cost me ~$200Cad after currency conversion, taxies, shipping, and duties.
This is what the end result looks like. Cool but expensive.
Right here on NA! We buy and sell and trade all the time, and while I can't say you can expect to get stuff for free (I can actually, there is a thread for that!), you will typically find reasonable prices on here.
As Toxie stated though, don't expect them to be "cheap" by any means. You can typically get 10% or so off ebay averages, but the market value is still the market value, so expect to pay somewhere around there.
If reasonable prices means barely less than ebay then that really doesnt help him either. I dont see these great prices people like to say exist around here.
If they dont like ebay prices, they arent going to like NA prices much more lol
Nice! Where did you find these on coverproject? I couldn't find them.
The Shadowfox covers are in a different place. Not everything is "hosted" on the site. Often times you have to search the forums. The search function on the site works great, especially if you use quotation marks in your search. I frequent that site, so feel free to ask.

Wait 10 years and come back into the market...not joking. I think the time to collect is then. Prices will be down. Right now old games are "hot". Focus on something other then NES/SNES. Might I suggest Genesis? Some Genesis games are...insane but on a whole I find them cheaper then Nintendo and easier to find. Or heck go back to Atari! Atari 2600 carts are so damn cheap...there's only a handful of crazy priced ones.
If that's not your style...handhelds. I think that a lot of people skip handhelds for some reason...Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance...take your pick.
On the other end, you could go newer. Nintendo's name always means the price is going to hold to some degree. Go for PS3, PSP, Vita, Xbox, 360...those are often left alone by resellers and newer collectors because they go for Nintendo stuff...and older Nintendo stuff at that.
But if you're totally set on NES/SNES...try here. Trading could get you what you want. Or straight up buying them. This site seems to be slightly below FMV.
Didn't read the rest of the thread, so don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but local bidding war groups on facebook have been a decent success for me. Landed my first set of GC Component cables there for a steal. A few other decent lots, including a CIB Zelda LTTP for way under retail value.
I'd want to put this in a universal game case, so it doesn't have to be Shadowfox, which is slightly bigger I believe right?
Do you know of any other custom Everdrive cover arts that you can print off like that from Coverproject or anywhere else?
It will need to be resized in order to fit in a UGC, but since the dimensions are so close, that shouldn't be too difficult to do.
I was certain that there were other UGC cover options on The Cover Project, but I can't seem to find them. You could always make a request in the TCP request thread. Many people have covers saved on their computer that they haven't linked to the forums.
I still find cheap games from time to time but at a much slower pace than I used to. You basically gotta go to the thrift stores, scour Craigslist and even ebay 24/7 to even have a chance of finding something. The best ones nowadays are the ones where people overprice your average marios and zeldas but slip when trying to overprice rarer titles, but even these are starting to do some actual research.
Video games are now collectibles just like any others, and unfortunately not a niche thing like when I started anymore (I still miss NES games being 2 a pop... )

When every place the prices are expensive, that means it's the normal price. This is now an expensive hobby. I was fortunate to get in early. And there is no bubble.
Unless you can go back in time, nowhere. Prices are high, deal with it, or just get an Everdrive/Powerpak.
^ This. I'm just going to emulate 8-bit and 16-bit and use an everdrive/etc. I in fact just traded 90% of my SNES collection and 95% of my Genesis collection among other cartridge-based games for ~$1,650 worth of PS1 games, PS2 games, backwards compatible PS3+games, PS4 Pro+games, and a Nintendo Switch. And I don't regret it. I still made a profit 10x over but it is sad that the market is super inflated for cartridge-based stuff. Instead of spending an ass-ton of $$$ for NES/SNES/Genesis I have a wife, 3,000sq.ft. house to finish furnishing, an automobile hobby, 90's disc-based games and yearly vacations to save up for. Sucks being an adult. LOL

Anyone know where to find printable custom box cover art for the Everdrive N8? Similar to the one's on the coverproject?
The Cover Project has lots of different versions. What are you looking for exactly?
This is the one that I use. It's sized for a Shadowfox NES case.

The hobby is huge right now, and supply is limited, so prices have gone way up.
Yardsales and thrift stores are your best bet to catch someone who doesnt know what they have
Daria said it really well:
If you can't find an item below "overpriced" prehaps they're not over priced?

The pulse design is really for Famicom though.

You showed up a couple years too late, the only way you'll find games for cheap is if people are selling their games under market value.
Or don't go for a complete set.
