I also enuoyed Castlevania - Aria of Sorrow, Circle of the Moon, and Harmony of Dissonance. [I enjoyed all 3 but my favorite was probably Aria of Sorrow]

    Kuru Kuru Kururin

    and Castlemaina too.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that

I also think the GBA F-Zero games are horrible, and probably why Nintendo thinks no one cares about the series. I actually can't think of a single good racing game on the GBA, at least not one that I ever played.

  • Must have GBA games:

    Boktai

    Fire emblem

    Fire emblem sacred stones

Mega man battle network series (all 6 games)

    Pokemon (all of them)

    Super Mario Bros 3

    Zelda link to the past

    Zelda nes classic series

There are plenty of other good games, but these are the must plays.

You do need to worry about fakes. They should be easy to spot though. If there isn't a two digit code imprinted somewhere on the front label, it's a fake. A super glossy label might also be a giveaway that a game is fake. Obviously the more popular games are more likely to be faked, but there are all sorts of fake GBA games out there. The Pokemon games have the biggest problem with fakes, probably followed by the final fantasy games. The Pokemon fakes are super easy to spot though since the label is almost always off, and you can usually tell by the back of the cart too if its fake or not.

I have Krazy Racers by Konami that I still need to play, but it probably isn't good. I just wanted it because Goemon. GBA definitely wouldn't be a system for racers. DS did pretty good in the racing category imo.

Appreciate the advice on how to spot them!

I'll add, for fakes, just take a good long look at the cart. A friend of mine bought a cart for the "game coy advance" we had a good laugh about it afterwards, but looking closely you should be able to spot something wrong. If you think something is wrong but can't put your finger on it, it's probably fake.

I'd add CIMA, both Golden Suns and both Sword Craft Story games.

"It's like a turnbased Shining Force but waaaay better than Beyond the Beyond.... uh... with Zelda puzzles." *two thums up*

Honest answer? Next time I really feel like playing one.

  • Wario Ware Inc!

Minish Cap is also in my top 3 Zelda games and Aria of Sorrow is probably the Castlevania closest to SotN in terms of style of play.
  • I'll add a few to this list not enough GBA love around here.... (which is a good thing; keep the speculators away until I get my set where I want it kthx). Anyways...

Sigma Star Saga (keep your eye out for this, very unique)

Car Battler Joe (another unique hybrid)

    Advance Guardian Heroes

    Gunstar Super Heroes

    Astroboy: Omega Factor

Boulder Dash EX (surprisingly fun update on classic game)

Drill Dozer (already mentioned but a damn great exclusive)

    Final Fantasy 1 + 2, 4, 5, 6 (all solid ports)

Ninja Five O (fantastic game, it's the Hagane of GBA)

    Pocky + Rocky w/Becky

Racing Gears Advance (fantastic uncommon racer)

Shining Force (must own tactical rpg)

Ogre Battle Let us cling together (ditto)

Wade Hixton's Counter Punch (closest thing to punch out on GBA)

Zelda Minish Cap (underrated Zelda game)

There's also a ton of great shooters + side scrollers if you're into those kinds of things. Too bad the library has 800+ kiddie games on it flooding it with crap.

I remember playing Wario Ware on the Wii. Fun game! Will definitely check it out. Definitely planning on getting all of the Castlemanias

Great post, thanks for the recommendations! Trust me the last thing ol Murray wants right now is a price spike

I honestly fucking "love" the first Golden Sun....

One of my favourite turn based RPGs.

Sounds like I need to play golden sun. I've been thinking of picking up pocky and rocky as well but it's pretty pricey.
  • I still need to grab a bunch of the Mega Man games (there's something like 10-20?) for the GBA, as well as several more uncommon/rares (before the speculators kill the market on them being relatively cheap in comparison to their rarities).

As an general statement there seems to be a bunch of relatively obscure and unknown platformer-type games for the system.

there's a bunch of licenced games even that are way better than they have any right to be. Lilo and Stitch is a metal slug-like run and gun (but cuter of course) Monster House is a kinda Zeldaish adventure game with Halloween characters. Jackie Chan Adventures is a half decent beat em up, I'm sure there's more out there

Well you've got 10 games in the battle network series alone, then you have the chip challenge game, mega man and bass, and the zero games. So yea probably close to 20. Anyone played yggdra union? Thoughts on that one?
  • Mario vs. Donkey Kong is a great little puzzle game.
  • Advance wars, final fantasy tactics, fire emblem, Mr driller, tales of phantasia, pokemon, mario, dk, castlevania, harvest moon, kirby, metroid, mega man
  • Tactics Ogre
  • Final Fantasy Tactics Advance gets my vote as the top game to play; simply awesome. Way better than the PS1 installment, and more interesting than Tactics Ogre (never have been able to get into that one). The GBA has a special place for me since it really got me back into gaming. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow is another must play, though admittedly it was the first in the series that I had played, but I still hold it to be the best. Circle of the Moon was pretty good too, or whatever was on the other side of the Double Pack. The Fire Emblems were good too, though I never finished them.

I have not gone back and replayed it since 2002(?), but GT Advance Racing was a great racing game back then. I am sure that it has not aged well.

As for imports, Magical Vacation is pretty decent. A different type of story telling, but that can be a good thing. Oriental Blue is on my list of ones to get to this year.

There are tons of worthwhile ports to play. Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls is at the top of my list. I'd also say Lunar, Phantasy Star Collection (only tried to play the first game on it), and Tales of Phantasia (kind of meh on replay) are all worth checking out.

Hmm, I apparently need to play more GBA! I probably bought the most games new for it than any other system, but did not get to many of them. Riviera, Yygdra, both Summon Nights, Super Robot something, CIMA, Rebelstar, Minnish Cap, the Metroids, and who knows what else. Too much to play!

I'll be the odd one out and say that I think Golden Sun is terrible  . Never playing that again, though maybe I'll play the next installment just to see...

And definitely watch out for fakes. I went to a rather high end neighborhood garage sale once and walked away with pirated Sponge Bob games and other shovelware  . They show up everywhere.

  • There's a PDF of the manual online. I'd consult it for the first couple missions

But basically every unit has a leader that gives it a bonus, each member of the unit can equip one item, with the right stats and reputation + good/evilness you can change classes of each person, etc
  • These have probably been mentioned, but I am a big fan of the Summon Night games.
  • Oh, and if you're into homebrews, the GBA had a really active scene once upon a time. Anguna, by Nathan Tolbert, is back in print (Piko), however, and it is a Zelda-like worth checking out.
