Never knew there was an active GBA homebrew scene.

  • Some of my favorite titles on the system

    Frogger: Temple of the Frog

    Castlevania: Circle of the Moon

    Metroid: Fusion

    Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

    Astro Boy: Omega Factor

    Wario Land 4

    Minish Cap

    Drill Dozer

    Sonic Advance

    Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land

    Klonoa 2

I implore you to check out Frogger. It's a super fun hidden gem that nobody ever talks about.

I'd suggest to stick to games made for the system rather than ports, the Advance has a great library with tons of cheap good games to explore. Why shell out those extra dollars to play ports of games that are either A: Cheaper Elsewhere, or B: You already own on another console.

For the cost of the Classic Legend of Zelda port, you can get about 4 or 5 quality titles that you've never played.

    because portable?

What, do you take an NES, a tv and a Zelda cart with you on the bus?

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance gets my vote as the top game to play; simply awesome. Way better than the PS1 installment, and more interesting than Tactics Ogre (never have been able to get into that one). The GBA has a special place for me since it really got me back into gaming. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow is another must play, though admittedly it was the first in the series that I had played, but I still hold it to be the best. Circle of the Moon was pretty good too, or whatever was on the other side of the Double Pack. The Fire Emblems were good too, though I never finished them.

I have not gone back and replayed it since 2002(?), but GT Advance Racing was a great racing game back then. I am sure that it has not aged well.

As for imports, Magical Vacation is pretty decent. A different type of story telling, but that can be a good thing. Oriental Blue is on my list of ones to get to this year.

There are tons of worthwhile ports to play. Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls is at the top of my list. I'd also say Lunar, Phantasy Star Collection (only tried to play the first game on it), and Tales of Phantasia (kind of meh on replay) are all worth checking out.

Hmm, I apparently need to play more GBA! I probably bought the most games new for it than any other system, but did not get to many of them. Riviera, Yygdra, both Summon Nights, Super Robot something, CIMA, Rebelstar, Minnish Cap, the Metroids, and who knows what else. Too much to play!

I'll be the odd one out and say that I think Golden Sun is terrible  . Never playing that again, though maybe I'll play the next installment just to see...

And definitely watch out for fakes. I went to a rather high end neighborhood garage sale once and walked away with pirated Sponge Bob games and other shovelware  . They show up everywhere.

That would've been Harmony of Dissonance.  Which also is worth a mention if only for the

    PSP breh.

Can't justify dropping over $100 in ports of games I already own.

Way back in the early to mid 2000s. After RPG Maker that was probably my first attempt to learn how to do more than just drag and drop. Some fellow wrote a book called something like "How to Program for the GBA" but Nintendo blocked it for a number of years. You could find it for a while, then it would disappear, then it would be back, that kind of thing. It was eventually released free as an e-book several years later. The first advice in it was to go out and learn an entire programming language, C, so that became a bit daunting.

But yeah, they used to have forums, competitions, and releases, just like we do for the NES today. China used to sell programmable carts, and once those disappeared the scene seems to have withered with it. I think that the ROMs for most games were legitimately distributed too, but I have not really looked. Good Deal Games has a few carts for sale: http://www.gooddealgames.com/Publishing_Nintendo Gameboy Advance.html.

There have also been some unpublished titles that have been distributed by the devs or picked up by others to publish. Piko has published a few, though they were free for years. Not sure if they still are, or they have since tried to pull the ROMs.

  • I'll second Sigma Star Saga. Just an awesome game. Unrelated, but it's also one of my only CIB games.

The question is where should I go from here? What are the must haves for the system? Are reproductions that rampant?

    Any advice is appreciated

I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned these, but: Metroid Zero Mission and Gunstar Super Heroes. Zero Mission is my favorite GBA and Metroid game overall. Also, if you enjoyed the original Gunstar Heroes on Genesis, you need to try Gunstar Super Heroes.

Just recently aquired Gunstar Heroes, still need to play it. It has been burning a hole on my shelf for a little while now. Will definitely look into Super Heroes!
