Cheapest way of having a "complete" NES SNES collection?

When I think about it I don't play my games as much as I'd like, yet I like collecting them. Not sure why. Maybe it's the cover art maybe it's because they look cool displayed in my room. Whatever it is I like it.

This is going to sound completely ridiculous, but why not do the following? Buy an Everdrive so you can actually play as many games as you like, but aside from that if you want a "full collection" why not print out every single NES or SNES cover art there is, slide them in a universal game case, display them in your room however you like, and DON'T buy the actual game?

If you genuinely enjoy the look of box cover arts, why not?

  • Sure why not? If it makes you happy go for it.

I think someone said before, they collect cib games but only play on an everdrive, and the boxes may as well be empty for all they care

    I like collecting though personally.
  • To each their own
  • Because that look of disappointment and confusion every single person that enters your game room is gonna give you when they pick up a "game".....yourself included
  • Because youd be taking up a huge chunk of wall space upon which you could put something cool.

  • you wouldnt have a game collection. Youd have a universal case collection. Thats fine, but thats not collecting games.

This is where we have gotten to now.....this is life now.

You say that as if the average NintendoAge user has real life friends who would be in that situation.

I'm pretty sure 90% of this site can be categorized as "forever alone". Yes, being married is another form of that. So many married guys on here with a "us vs them" relationship.

    lmao

I know I'm being ridiculous but the box art is awesome. Isn't it? It's like having 700 small posters.

If it feels empty just fill them up with paper hahaha.

Just look at them online. Not sure if this is looking for some validation, but you aren't going to really get many if any responses that are along the lines of "yeah I get what you are doing". Either collect the real thing or don't but filling your house with empty shells is dumb imo.

  • When you're done, print out a copy of the Mona Lisa on an inkjet and frame it! That'll show those snooty Louvre bastards what's what!
  • Yet another time where visiting this forum feels like some kind of pro-anorexia group validating each others mental illnesses.

    hahaha you guys are funny

I readily admit that my idea is ridiculous, but comparing the Mona Lisa to NES box art is ridiculous too. There's only 1 real Mona Lisa, and to have a replica of the Mona Lisa in your house screams pretentiousness more than anything else.

Having a copy of box art from a video game collection isn't as bad if you actually enjoy the box art itself, which I do.
  • UGCs are fine, just don't collect an entire set of repro carts and you'll be alright.

Edit - Then again the amount of money you invest in cases/covers you could buy a lot of games with, make those an afterthought.

  • So you'd take up space with empty cases...eh?

I mean if you have the room to waste and it makes you happy...go for it.

And in the complete opposite direction you have me...going for full CIB set and a playing copy set (housed in UGCs, game and manual only).

At the end of it all I think I might be a lazy ass and actually get an Everdrive...because fuck it lol.

Part of the reason I'm going for such an insane goal is because after I'm gone...I want the CIB set to be donated to a museum for posterity's sake. I believe in keeping physical media alive and safe for future generations...I think it's important. There are more important things then video games that should also be kept safe...but I'm doing my small part. I can't save massive monuments or cities...but old video games? That's possible even for me.

Maybe they just reeeeaally like the Mona Lisa. Don't kid yourself, your empty box display "collection" idea is waaaaaay more pretencious.

  • Rather than have a collection of sweet cart only games and a nice video setup, I think spending a couple grand on empty print out cases is totally reasonable.

Just think in 40 to 50 years time there's going to be a bunch of museums who can't give away CIB NES game sets cause of all the old nerds dying off and bequething them.

That would be a wonderful thing. I doubt it though...I've only heard a few collectors mention that they might do that when their time comes...most of these people will end up with children though. I don't think that's in the cards for me. I can't physically have them. I can adopt and I might just end up doing that at some point if I really want a kid...but a mini me isn't going to be possible. So the logical thing for me to do is to donate it to a museum. The loose set can go to my kid if I have one.

  • Don't kid yourself, your empty box display "collection" idea is waaaaaay more pretencious.

I dunno man...a dork gamer who grew up with Nintendo printing out some Nintendo pictures because he actually likes them is different than someone getting a reprint of something that just happens to be worth $800 million as well as the most famous painting ever so they can hang it up in their one-bedroom rental.

  • I'm surprised cart collectors don't print the box art on normal bond paper put it inside a box protector along with the cart.

Would also help as placeholders so you don't have to keep rearanging your games.

    Better than using Post-it's.
  • Just pick some of your favs and print them off poster size and frame them up nice. Just a wall full of Ironswords!!

Cute how you cut off the part where I suggested they might like the painting.

  • Sorry OP, but you're an idiot.

The proper way to do this is to load up a flash drive with each individual ROM and throw it inside the box. Bonus points for including NESticle in there too.
  • if all you are interested in is the art then just print them out on your computer at that point saves you money and space.
  • Just a thought -- and stepping aside from the thread a bit -- if one really enjoys game box art and wants to a potential way to display it, then a couple of digital wall frames that cycle through a JPG slideshow consisting of a collection of game box art would be an option. It's relatively affordable (a couple hundred bucks for the digital frames), it's immediately expandable (add new images whenever you want), and programmable (cycle speed, arrangement, matting, transitions, etc.). Maybe one frame for each game system platform. I could see having an NES frame and a SNES frame for example. It would solve the OPs conundrum, but would also be kind of a neat option for hardcore collectors to enjoy the art as well.
  • Actually, I have just had a legit idea... Game collection wallpaper!
