Currency Art... or Just Defacing Currency.

Know a few collectors on here like to collect and are and others collect currency/bulllion so thought this would peek some of their interest. Bought this off eBay for a steal because it was poorly listed and unseen. Now it's nothing real crazy but thought it would generate some buzz or agian maybe not. The artist James Charles defaces US currency and sells them for a decent "buck." He has done several of these bills with each one different then the last never repeating a person. Defacement of currency is a violation of Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code. Whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months."

  • Banksy does that too
  • While I don't advocate for the defacement of our currency, I do have to admit that's both well done and hilarious. "Almighty dollars" hahahaha

Found it humorous as well and thought it was perfect for my office wall.

  • All i find is phone numbers and wheresgeroge.com stamped on dollas.
  • It's always nice when laws state the max sentence instead of the min...like, "hey, this is the worst that could happen!"
  • I remember going to the bars when I was younger and there would be a slew of dollar bills stapled to the wall that patrons had signed or drew little sketches on. I don't believe anyone actually went to jail over it. I think it's one of those laws thats more of a suggestion than something that's actually enforced. But... I'm Canadian...so my point is moose
  • I used to draw on $5 Bills all the time as a teen

I laughed way harder at that than I should have.

Ahhaha Bert I was just doing the same!  By the way I heard a story the other day about a moose escaping from a zoo and was terrorizing farmer's cattle.  One farmer was even quoting saying, "I heard my cattle crying in distress, when I went outside I couldnt believe what I saw. There was a moose shagging my cows doggy style."   Ahhh good ol' boys.  I believe it was in Canada somewhere.

HAHAHA! That story wouldn't suprise me one bit. Besides...a female moose IS called a cow...maybe he was just horny and confused. Happens to the best of us.
  • I've only heard of one person ever getting in trouble doing something to American money. That was a school teacher who was photo copying dollars for her class to recolor/redesign. This was like a preschool teacher...I think she got fined? No idea though...might have been a rumor.
  • People do this all the time. I wouldn't want to get caught doing, of course. Once it's back in circulation, how could anyone ever know who did it? With that said, I've seen some pretty impressive dollar bill art.

Photocopying money is s completely separate issue from this kind of defacement.

I STRONGLY suspect that the ONLY kinds of defacement that would get a person in serious legal trouble are:

    1) melting coins into ingots -- happened to people melting nickels a few years ago

    2) defacing paper money to look like a different denomination

They almost certainly don't care about money based artwork, and tons of people do it without getting into trouble.

  • I like the hipster Lincoln one that made the rounds on the interwebs.

Last time I saw one of those machines that squash a penny with different designs it had a plate of legal text explaining why it was not illegal.
  • It's probably illegal but they've got enough on their plate that chasing down folks making photocopies or defacing cash isn't a high priority.
  • Yeah, it's illegal, but I don't think it our government really cares.

U.S. money's just gross anyway. Somewhere I've heard that most older US bills (When they all used to be "greenbacks"... now only the ones are green in the back), may still have traces of coke laced in them, especially ones that were rolled and used as straws.

I just wish there wasn't so much money out there with blood stains on it. I'm dead serious, I've got one now with a few spots on it. The people who should be in jail are the ones who don't know how to fix their papercuts! lol

I don't know why, but this really made me think of this effect of exposing vinyl 45's to blacklight and what appears on them.

Could we start an online database of paper money that has gross substance residue or secret messages in invisible inks?
