Does anybody ever wonder why AVGN has never been a member of NA?

Just thinking about it, I wonder if its because he's too busy with all of the work he does, or if he believes he's above us all and doesnt want to stoop to our level...

Maybe its a completely different reason, I dunno.

What do you guys think?

  • Probably because he is busy, and has a life apart from gaming. Also he probably checked it out and decided its not something he wants and since he hasnt even made a effort, he doesnt know its actually a great site and community,if he had joined he would probably stick around i think to some degree.
  • He's never been much of a video game collector. Mike Mattei did the majority of the collecting and after they got big people just sent stuff. He's more into movies than anything. The video games was a happy accident for him
  • Some people just aren't interested in forums. There's other avenues out there now to talk about your interests, like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc.

Also, there's a few members here who just hate on YouTube people when they get the chance, so I wouldn't blame him if that's the reason. Those few give us all a bad name.

Good idea! I'll have it up tonight. Their avatar will become AVGN's face.
  • I like to think of us as "ONE of the most prestigious gaming forums" as opposed to THE.
  • I could only imagine how much time editing, shooting
  • He does the Nerd vids, the Let's Plays, Monster Madness, other movie reviews, and god knows what else. I know Mike has taken over some of the stuff, but still that's a lot of videos each week.
  • He probably just doesn't care. Hell, do you think he even knows about the place?
  • You've seen his videos, right? How he talks about castlevania III being unbeatable, or all the errors me makes when talking about stuff in his monday videos. He doesn't look into games much, he just plays and collects them. So not much point in joining a forum.

That said, what makes you sure he hasn't joined?
  • I've thought of this before too.. James Rolfe was my gateway into retro gaming/collecting back in 2008. I owe him a lot, many many hours spent enjoying his work.

I know from watching an interview with Mike, he claimed James got hundrerds of his games from a single store sale for next to nothing. Store was called patch kids, or something like that? Idk it wasn't Canadian haha. I know he did do some online shopping for stuff, like some of the PAL exclusives and his SE. Along with some hard to find CD consoles, like a Jaguar CD, CDi and 3DO.

His collection isn't very particulate at all, I think he just gets what he finds and shelves it if it's a good price. If you've ever paid attention to individual games on his shelves, you'll know what I mean.

The one example I keep thinking of is this Dracula X box in his collection. It's really dusty just chilling in the background with some other random limp SNES boxes.  So to me, he either kept it from his childhood or got it next to nothing from golden day game hunting. I dont think he paid retail OR stayed up all night waiting to snipe an Ebay auction. To me it just looks so out of place. But anyways, I guess my point is that he isn't a die hard collector. As (most) collectors typically idolize those harder to find pieces IE not having it literally collect dust.

I think with rising prices/personal responsibilities, he took a step back and hasn't come back strong enough yet. IE Joining " the most prestigous gaming forum out there"

He's also mentioned a few times that it's too competitive, and prices are ridiculously high. He referenced the Penesian games in that example. And that was YEARS ago. So I dont expect him to come back, join NA and make an ISO to complete his unlicensed set. But that doesn't mean he can't come on and chit chat about collecting. So like Matttbep said, the forums probably aren't for him. I think he has his own forums on his website anyways.

  • As others have said I don't think he's a collector. He's more of a gamer/entertainer. He doesn't do what we do. He might have also tried already to join under a random name, saw he didn't like it and left. Or he's still here under a random name. If I was him I wouldn't bring attention to myself by calling myself AVGN or James or anything related to him. I'd have a totally random name.

Im always logged into all 3 sites.  Team Never Logoff!

  • I don't think he actually gives a shit about video games or collecting anymore, the AVGN is just a job to him, something he stumbled into and ran with it. His real passion is horror movies, not video games.

Yeah totally, I forgot to mention this. Guy will find any way he can to talk about classic horror films. He lives for that stuff

yeah, I doubt he cares, or even knows that it's worth anything. I remember in a video he mentioned having a near complete nes set except for a couple, but they showed his panic restaurant in another video and it's the pal one. I think you said it well with "he isn't very particulate with the collection" it's just a bunch of games he's acquired over the years that he talks about on YouTube
  • So did we bust out AVGN for being a fake? Nothing against him because as an entertainer, I have loved his videos from day 1, but I know some wannabe collectors in my town that think hes he end all be all when it comes to collecting.
  • That doesn't make him a fake, it just makes your friends uninformed
  • I'm still waiting for the day that he stops doing AVGN entirely. That'll be bittersweet.
  • If he has a collection he is still a collector, just not someone who is actively trying to get as many games as possible, or go after a complete set.

I like youre explaination.  It pretty much sums it up.  Except, I think Mike is the collector, and James is not.

I feel like it's a miracle it's still going on at all. Back in his hey day he was doing two per month, which is insane. And he's wanted to stop at least a few times already. Even if he did stop, there is plenty of great content to go back too. I will be sad too when the day comes however

AVGN is the professional wrestling of retro-gaming videos. Tongue-in-cheek entertainment that only fools believe is actually real.

Now James Rolfe himself isn't a fake. Like others have said, his real passion are movies and film-making. I've never heard him in any of his non-AVGN videos or interviews really describe himself as a video game collector. Mike Mattei OTOH is the video gaming collector/enthusiast of the pair and he does have an NA account.

  • I love watching James content over the years but I've always felt like AVGN got a little too much credit, maybe a lot of right-place-right-time. I always felt like he just took the premise of what Seanbaby had already done 5+ years earlier, changed "angry punk" to "angry nerd", and brought it to video form, something that wasn't possible for Seanbaby back in 2000. The furthest Seanbaby was able to get with his characters brand was a monthly column in EGM magazine. Seanbaby definitely instilled my love of embracing and shitting on terrible games, I learned about all of the worst NES games thanks to Seanbaby. By the time AVGN became a thing I honestly felt like I already knew too much to really get into his videos that much. I actually enjoy his stuff on movies way more and was never too surprised that movies are what he really loves.

It's almost like James is to Seanbaby as Oreo is to Hydrox. Hydrox was the one who was really first on the scene, but everyone in the world knows Oreo instead. Can't even find Hydrox anymore!
