Oh the longbox madness

I've already posted this on PlayStationAge but I want to share with you guys too.  I've never really posted any pics of any significant portion of my collection before but I wanted to share this one.  I'm pretty proud of finally finishing it.

So, I've finally completed my PS1 longbox collection.  I've been slowly working on this collection for the past 2 years.  I'm proud to say it's finally completed.  I kind of stumbled into this subset.  I initially started out just picking up a few longbox titles that I had nostalgia for but I happened upon a lot that I consider my all time best score containing a PS1 console with cables, psychic detective, johnny bazookatone, space griffon, assault rigs, off-world interceptor, and about 15 jewel case and disc only games for a pittance.  After that it was off to the races.  In my journey I've made some awesome scores and also overpaid here and there.  All in all it was worth it.  I had such a good time collecting these.  I didn't go for the full variant set but rather the smaller 102 unique title set although I've got a few variants tucked away.

  • Nice D.

Didn't even know they had that on PlayStation
  • The set looks very nice, congrats! Something about the longbox PSX/Saturn games really does it for me, I can remember most of the adverts in EGM, Gamefan, and Gamepro. Too bad the format was dying by the time I owned the system.

  • That is a really nice looking collection of longboxes. It's funny how we perceive the value of things so differently over time. I remember back when I actually had the original PlayStation, all the dongbox titles were of the first wave of games released, and often the first iterations of titles like Toshinden or Ridge Racer. They felt "old", oversized, and kinda clunky compared to the newer jewel cases releases. I didn't like having them in my collection because they felt out of place.

But now, longboxes are the minority in the PS1 library, and as a collector, the size and extra space for more elaborate artwork is attractive, and I prefer them over the jewelcase versions.
  • It had to be a pain in the but to find so many of them without cracks or bad scratches. I didn't even realize they made that many before going to the jewel cases. I need to find some new long boxes to replace the ones I have but that's an adventure all by itself.
  • Well, on the plus side, you can always swap out the oversized jewel cases from random sports titles. But I think we've actually reached the point where all the cases of crap Sega CD titles like Madden whatever have been absorbed by the collector's market and even the least valuable titles are worth a little change.
  • Wow. Congrats. Always cool to see a set like this all together.
  • Congrats! I did this set maybe 4 or 5 years ago, but then parted it out and only kept my favorites (RE, Twisted, Tekken, etc.). The hardest for me were Starblade Alpha and Tecmo World Golf, was that true for you too?
  • Congrats!

What type of adhesive do you recommend using for the cardboard "labels" that start to peel?

I actually managed to come across both of those pretty early on, but I do keep my eyes open for those titles actually and you never see them.  Silverload was much more difficult for me.

  • Love the subset collecting. Nicely done OP!

Yeah back when I was doing it Silverload was $50 sealed all day long but I suppose it has dried up since.  How about Psychic Detective or Braindead 13?  Those were pretty uncommon then too.
  • Yup. They still are. Also Novastorm....thinking about it, that one was a pain.
  • Welcome to the club!  Now time for the variants

Here's my set.  Can't believe that was five years ago!

Yup.  Tecmo World Golf, Starblade Alpha, Psychic Detective, Braindead 13, Silverload.

Did you ever pick up the third variants for Tekken and Kings Field for your set?

    The jewel cases?

**Edit** Just looked up the set again and per Jason's updates it looks like there are insert variants.  Pretty cool!

yeah, I'd play with it all day.

    Great game
  • Wow that's pretty. I'm targeting about half of those myself, but its a lower priority right now
  • any sealeds you want to swap for CIBs? i'm going all sealed on this stupid set.
  • Wow! I've always wondered about a few of these games, like Psychic Detective, Philosoma, and Magic Carpet.

What's your favorites in the set?

Sorry, no sealed games.  That's quite a lofty goal.  How's that coming?  Some of those I don't know if I've ever even seen  sealed.  Starblade comes to mind.

Honestly, my favorites are probably the more popular titles you would expect.  Resident Evil was my first ps1 experience and still one of my faves on the system.  Warhawk and zoop also which I think was a criminally underrated puzzle game.

Philisoma is cool though I'm not real big on shooters (probably because I suck at them).  Psychic Detective confused the crap out of me.  Very weird stuff.  A lot of those FMV adventure games, just like on other systems, are crap.  But in context of the time at which they came out are a cool concept.  I haven't ever actually tried magic carpet.

Also, I'd give Disc World a shot.  It's pretty entertaining though I haven't made it super far.  Can't go wrong with eric idle voicing your main character.

  • Very cool. I thought about going for a full plastic/cardboard variant set someday.

Gotta love Sony for putting all the names on the spines the opposite direction, eh? lol
  • Before I switched my collecting focus, I was in pursuit of a complete sealed set.  I got very close and have a buddy who is in the final stretch.

I use to have Magic Carpet.  It was a very cool early Bullfrog title where you are doing some light base-building, while trying to fend off your rival magician and destroy his base.  There was also creatures like sand worms roaming each map to deal with, cool spells to earn(?).  Would recommend.

Great info, thanks. I'm a sucker for 90s FMV games and other such oddities. Discworld is definitely another one I've wondered about. Magic Carpet is nothing like I imagined, was picturing something more along the lines of Price of Persia 3D ... but with flying

Yeah I'm the same way, as I've been seeking out Sega CD and early PS1 games oddities lately.  And I'm gonna be all over that Night Trap reissue
