The Collection Change

  • I used to grab stuff for tons of consoles. Then before a move I realized it was just wasting space. Got rid of most of my 360 and Genesis games. Mostly stuck to NES and SNES. Currently I've moved on to Atari mostly for rediscoverly, simplicity so my daughter can play, and price. Already amassed a ton of games for super cheap. Slowly been getting rid of some SNES as it gets less use. I still like games on the console so I won't be completely purging. Just trimming the fat.
  • I changed from loose to cib nes. Still collect sets loose for snes, n64, and genesis. And solid games/first party for gamecube and wii. Have nearly a full wii u set.

But havent changed systems or anything. I wouldnt have ever collected it unless i wanted it. So nope havent sold and switched
  • Yes, every collection eventually undergoes the change at a certain age.

    You'll notice:

This is all perfectly natural and is the sign of a maturing video game collection.
  • I collected ninja turtles (toys, prototypes, comics, original art, everything) for close to 30 years. I eventually fell out of love with the collection. Liqidated a good chunk of it and financed my snesset and modt of my nes set. No regrets.

    haha I enjoyed that
  • Seem reasonable to me. I started out buying things for tons of consoles. Slowly I have rolled back to buying for a handful. That may turn into selling a few consoles as well.

It is nice that collecting is not set in stone. If you change interests there is no reason you cannot adjust.
  • The only thing that's changed for me has been adding a system, the GBA, to my collecting dossier (of NES/SNES/Genesis). I didn't have any nostalgia for it at all, but I've played roms of it in the past and enjoyed the games that I played so naturally segued into collecting for it.

It's a cartridge system with paper boxes + manuals (a dead breed of video games), has lots of great exclusives that can be played "Nintendo-intended legit" on DS's (or Gamecubes with the adapter), and hasn't spiked price-wise for most games (although all the name-brand Mega Man/Castlevania/Mario games are where you'd expect them to be). Plus they play fantastic on my Retron 5.
  • One thing I'm very happy to see over the last several years is a shift in mindset for most people here that they embrace the concept of different types of collections and different collecting goals. I can remember a time when people were rather silly about what other people 'should' collect or shouldn't, and I think over-time that has mostly dissipated. Granted, that has never been an opinion shared by everyone here by any means, but I just mean that I've seen less and less of that mentality over time, which is great.
  • I switch my focus on what I'm collecting but I don't really sell off full system collections when I do it. It kinda makes it easier for me because this week I may find some amazing deals on CiB N64 so I can focus on grabbing those while the price is good. Next month it may be CiB SNES that I find a deal on and so I'll focus on those while I can get a deal.

Obviously full sets are built slower this way but I feel like deals are easier to come by and I'm always looking for deals. I also won't regret selling games from any of my systems this way.
  • Started focusing on Genesis in the early 90s. I quickly came to my senses and continued my NES collection after a couple years.

Then I collected for NES and games I liked for whatever the current gen system was at the time. That run ended at Xbox 360 and now I exclusively collect NES with a heavy focus on homebrew.

    Your new avatar is cool
  • Hell I started collecting ps1 then exploded to just about anything

Now my focus is more on misprints then getting games I don't have sense my site was created. Although I will still buy games

I know this guy and he is for sure a homebrew collecting machine. He's part of the reason homebrew is alive and well. Shit, this guy has hooked me up with some sweet games over the years and got me back into NES.

On a side note....... his new avatar is shitty! #gobacktooldavatar
  • I only collect for the NES these days but I used to collect for a lot more consoles but have sold out all of my none NES items numerous times to help fund the NES collection.
  • I've been jumping from system and system very regularly for the past few years.

Although, I'm now at a point where I'm not buying everything, and instead getting games on each system I have that fit the criteria of being either the best sellers on the system or games that I like.

I have a list for most systems (most since with all the older stuff, I'm hard pressed to even find shitty sports games,) so I can jump from system to system whenever I want.

For the past month or so, I have been right into DS, getting all the games that I have been interested in CIB. I'm going back to Hawaii in about a month and a half, where I will be hopefully getting an NTSC 3DS, so I will likely have a kick with that for a while, too.

Collecting like this is such a breath of fresh air for me since I know that what I'm getting is going to be good. That and I try to keep to focusing on only looking out for about a dozen or so games at one time. That way I won't accumulate mass amounts of games, either.
  • I've bought, sold, and re-sold more NES/SNES/Genesis stuff than I can count...numerous times. My collection has since been condensed down to only my most favorite, must-have games.

Do what makes you happy! Everyone finds fulfillment in this hobby in their own way.
  • Everyone collects differently, do whatever makes you happy. Collecting is very much an individual thing, that's what's so fun about the community, seeing how everyone else does their thing.

    Fuzzy Bunny noticed Fluffy Bunny....
  • Started with NES loose in the early days then decided hell why not go CIB ......then I kept rolling from there until recently where I promised myself after I pick up the last few SNES items I need that's it! (Although I've told myself that numerous times)

I have list of things I want to do with my collection when I retire (find baggies for NES games, clean a few carts, a couple missing posters, Upgrade a few items) but to answer your question.... habits change and goals change..... at least mine have and it gave me a great appreciate for collecting for different systems.
  • So i went thru this about 7 years ago. I was down to around 20 nes to complete loose set. I was also going for snes at same time. Decided to sell all my other consoles, i guess sacrifice for nes. I did very well selling and found some good deals on boxes so, what the heck went for cib nes, and just completed a few weeks ago. Flintstones 2 manual being the last manual needed. Was a lomg journey. Dont regret it!!

Awesome i did same thing. Looking for similar items, baggues, inserts, box upgrades and try to get them as close as possible. What tool or site did you use for list of items in nes games?

I used Wizards page on Game FAQs when I got started and probably opened another 150 or so sealed games I had since I never planned to sell them that wasn't on his list. I have an excel sheet I can shoot you in a month or so once I finish compiling everything which should be over 500 licensed enteries.

I do have a list of all posters, inserts, maps etc

  • Good discussion and insight here boys and girls. Although I wasn't seeking advice, all of your responses gave me some things to really consider.
  • I started around 6 years ago and had original thought it would be neat to have a full NES set. In my area stuff back then was pretty easy to come by so I just started keeping other stuff I was finding and still selling enough to keep even. As I was building up the NES set I decided to go ahead and do N64 too because I was finding a lot of it locally and NES was slowing down a little. Then I had amassed a pretty good chunk of SNES and though what the hell, why not. Over the past 6 years I've been able to stay pretty true to my original goals. I've never really changed goals but just started/added new ones. Now I'm sitting at 764/768 on NES, 298/298 on N64, 720/723 on SNES, and 378/568 on GameCube. I'll eventually finish NES and SNES for good but have shifted towards finishing GameCube now, it shouldn't be to bad its all common stuff left now. It's all comes down to how you like to collect. If your no longer content or enjoy collecting NES and want to do something else I'd give yourself some time before you let it all go because you may regret it after to start getting into something else.
  • The closest thing to "shifting away" from certain collecting I've ever done I guess was cutting down on NES/SNES and going to Sega.  For years I was actively searching out primarily retro Nintendo games, not trying to complete the sets but just get all the games I ever personally wanted but never got.  I have since reached that point, although every so often I find new games to add and I'll just pick those up if I can.  But yeah, I have switched to actively searching for Sega Genesis/Sega CD/Sega Saturn as my primary focus.

Other than that, I have a few times in the past wondered if I should get rid of a grouping of games in my collection I maybe don't really want, to trade up to something I do want.  N64 was one such collection of games.  I've only got about 40 or so N64 games and I'm not terribly attached to them.  Haven't gone forward with that yet though, as I'm worried I will regret parting with them.  One idea I have is I was thinking to pack them all up and leave them at my parents house for a while to first see if I'd miss them if they were gone.  Might do that soon.
  • Never

    I started with two rules:

    1. Collect only games that I want to play

    2. Only CIB games that come in plastic cases (Cart and Manual only for NES/SNES/N64/GB/GBC/GBA) aka no cardboard boxes

Sometimes I will have a game and sell it because its not worth keeping in my collection but I've never made any huge changes.
  • I have not changed my collecting goals but I have added different goals over time. I knew for a long time that I wanted a loose NES set and I was able to finish up the near-complete licensed set a couple of years ago. I also want to finish the NES PAL exclusive set and the unlicensed set, at least most of it. I have since added a nice Famicom exclusive collection, and SNES, N64, and GB games that look fun. I will probably get more into NES manual collecting down the road but I'm not sure what else I'm interested in.

My question is how many times / how often have you changed up your collection?

I just did something like this.  I just traded 90% of all of my SNES, Genesis, Intellivision, and about 30% of my GameBoy collection for; a PS4 Pro, a PS3 (backwards compatible w/PS1 and PS2), several RPGs on all Sony systems, and a Nintendo Switch.  I figured I could get more use out of the disc-based systems and solve two problems in one that I had.  It costs me more space to store cartridge-based games than disc cases and I didn't want to buy a PS4, PS3, or Switch with my own money.  I think I've moved from a collecting to just collect mindset to collecting to play.  SNES, Genesis, and etc are perfectly emulated so I'm not really missing much there.  I'll be looking to trade more cartridge-based stuff for even more disc-based this year or next.

My advice is if you're ok with it and will have little remorse then go for it!  Especially if you desire SNES more than the NES/N64--which you should since it was/is the best console ever.     Do what makes you happy!  Life's too short...
