The Collection Change

  • Once. I'm still recovering trying to get back my favorite disc games
  • I was collecting solely NES games but collecting has really slowed down with the never ending price jumps.
  • A few times I have sold a lot of Gamecube games for N64 carts. Or Wii U games for SNES carts. Or GBA games for DS games. It depends, but I've shifted many of the games I care less about for ones I care more about. Focus and always has been SNES, N64 and DS whereas I've sacrificed NES, GameCube, GBA, Wii, Wii U, and PS1-3 games to get more SNES/N64/DS games. I am also collecting for the Switch but kind of buying those as they release and when I have money, not sacrificing my collection for them.
  • I made a similar decision this week. I'm selling off all my loose carts for NES, SNES and N64 to focus on collecting CIB games. Frees up a lot of space and helps keep the hobby in check.
  • I can say that I went wild and collected everything when I first started years ago. Wanted Everything under the sun. Collected everything I could find. Problem with that is it costs money. So i had to sell everything more than once.

NOOOOOOW I've narrowed down quite a bit. I only go for full sets of Sony systems. While Genesis, Dreamcast, and Nintendo from GameCube up [including handhelds] are just games i loved as a kid and want to play. Works out a lot better.

Also, budgeting and patience helps a ton.

Yeah thats what I did. Don't regret it at all

  • I'm collecting loose NES carts. Don't want a complete collection but still going for around 400 games. Never thought of collecting CIB stuff. There's something that doesn't sit right for me about buying boxes and manuals separately. If I was going CIB I'd want the cart, box and manual that came together originally. Even the dust sleeves.
  • I started out with a simple goal: every Zelda game CIB. I reached that goal in the Skyward Sword era. I then started focusing on CIB Final Fantasy games, specifically getting the collector's editions for those that had them. I never completed that goal as a bad breakup followed by lawyers and court costs for custody battle wiped me out, and I sold off a lot of the Zelda games. Still have all the FF games I bought, and I kept my favorite Zelda games, but have no interest in "complete sets" anymore, and am only looking for nice Zelda hacks to play on the AVS I pre-ordered.
  • i collect everything for every system. I have most of the systems hooked up, and eventually plan on having everything hooked up and accessible. I want to be able to have any game that someone might remember and want to play. It's also nice to watch my kids go from just dance, to mario maker, to call of duty, to mega man 2, to nba jam, and everything in between. Just because i didn't play it or don't know about it doesn't mean i shouldn't pick it up in case a friend or something is like "oh shit, i played NHL 2k3 back in the day".

The great thing about this type of collecting is that i don't have to drop a ton of money on games, because most people didn't play the expensive games anyway, and have no real attachment or desire to play them. If someone really cares i can emulate it. Also, i've been collecting for around 20 years so most of the popular games i was able to get on the cheap at some point or another. That being said, i was mostly collecting things on the cheap, so back then i wasn't trying to spend 10 bucks for a single NES game so i missed on a lot of games that ended up being stupid expensive anyway.
