Never sold on eBay, is it that bad?

I'm selling some stuff for my girlfriends family, some of it is decent, but I have no experience as a seller on eBay. What can I expect? Is it a pain in the ass to start as a new seller?

  • Ebay and paypal protect the buyer so much that I dont think there is much fear to buy from 0 feedback as a consumer. I just think ebay sucks for any seller
  • It's a mixed bag. I haven't had any issues selling, but I can also replace everything I've sold so far so that may be why I haven't had any issues.
  • I've had very few issues personally as a seller. I'm not a full time seller by any means, but I've done around $10k in sales overall, and have only had one person have an issue where the game arrived damaged. I refunded the shipping cost for them as a courtesy, as it was a cheap game, and they still left neutral feedback, even though it was clearly out of my hands.
  • I only sell a few things here and there, and the only problem I've ever had was that once for some reason, it sent the payment to a non-existent PayPal account instead of the PayPal that is linked to eBay. But other than that I've had no bullshit.
  • When you're just starting out, eBay will hold your money for a couple of weeks until you hit a sales threshold. eBay takes 10% of all your sales, on top of Paypal's fees. Most buyers on eBay are eager to screw you over using eBay's Buyer Protection.

If none of that bothers you, get selling on eBay today.

All true except i would replace most buyers with some buyers....i think ive had 1-2 buyers i suspected of foul play in over 1000 transactions

  • So how much do I have to sell before I get my money?
  • Be ready for ebay to kiss the buyer's butt so hard it'll be polished and you get the short end of the stick. A lot of folks I know gave up on ebay for high end items. I have a box of famicom games i need to mail off to my buddy to sell as a lot as he knows the system in and out.

You'll get your money for each sale, PayPal just holds the money until the item has been delivered.

As for the threshold for them not putting a hold at all? Not sure on that one. But it's not like they hold all your funds until you hit a certain amount.
  • Also a lot of alarmists ITT. I've been selling on eBay for many years. I've only had a handful of problems, and none were difficult to fairly resolve.

oh ok that's not too bad then
  • Make sure you take good picturrs of the items you are selling. Also, make sure to be very clear in your listings on what you are selling. Look at some listings and get ideas on how to format the description. A lot of options when listing so make sure you look at all the details carefully. Good luck!
  • You're in Canada, which is awful given your only option for tracked US mail is like $16. You may want to consider using it for every sale early on though. If the items you're going to sell would have their value grossly deflated by the $16 shipping, maybe just try to sell locally again.
  • You should also be aware of buyers asking for a partial refund. Some dishonest buyers may try this with you because they know you are a new seller. You can always put in your description that you don't do partial refunds.
  • make sure you have all your shipping preferences set in stone before you list something.
  • never let people barter with you, ask them to follow the ebay policies, if they don't like something don't bid ! a few dollars less is more important then the contant bs
  • Selling on eBay is great about 95% of the time. It's quick, easy and convenient for both the buyer and the seller. That 5% of the time you can get real assholes of buyers or sellers, if you are the buyer. But that is life, nothing is 100% guaranteed. I complain about eBay and how I should stop using it but I never actually stop because it really is the easiest way to sell.
  • Try selling something for under a hundred first. Nothing super cheap, just something to test the waters. But not under $20. Ebay is a great place to sell and buy, everyone is doing it.
  • I dont care for it, but sold tons of stuff since early 2000s.

Its not as bad as you think, but maybe different because you are in canada.

I have a whole box of shit I need to sell that im too lazy to
  • This room is a trap devusit by Satan! Go ahead dauntlessly make rapid progress!!!!
  • If people ask questions when you have pictured and disclosed everything clearly, generally they are your problem buyers. They are either picky or dumb. Avoid them. I block people like that
  • I've sold tons of stuff from comics to magic the gathering cards. Just be honest and make sure you have your preferences set properly, such as paypal only and what kind of shipping services you offer. I always ship with tracking and if the ticket is really high item $500 or more I'll only ship it with insurance, this allows for less bullshit from bad buyers. Also, package those goods like you were sending your child, but easily accessible, I had a buyer complain that it was packaged so well it took him 20 minutes to unwrap it, and he was probably right but the USPS seems to know when I ship graded comics and cracks a corner on a case 25% of the time, but not anymore, I'll be relaxing in my bubble wrap throne if you need me.
  • I've only sold maybe 10 things on eBay ever. 9 of those were fine. The last time I sold something (the new Star Wars Battlefront) the buyer filed a claim like 2 months later saying I never sent it. Luckily, they were dumb enough to leave positive feedback after receiving it, so eBay/Paypal sided with me, but I still had a hold placed on my account while they were looking into it. It really put me off from selling on there. I don't know how people that sell a lot of volume on there handle it since there are so many dishonest people out there.

You know there is a great marketplace right here on NA, and lots of Famicom collectors! Don't feel like eBay is your only option.

To the OP, I sold on eBay only one time. Waiting 21 days for payment to clear your account is such a pain, and it seems there are way too many people pulling scams so I stick to forum sales.

yeah that's why I've never some on eBay before, I'll sell any game stuff I have here.

However, these items aren't video games   there's some Zippo lighters that commemorate D-Day, they're actually worth a little bit. And some 90s NRFB Barbie's, not really worth much. Maybe worth selling as a lot
  • It's fine for the most part, but I'd start small and try to build your feedback.
