Al's Music Video & Games burns down!

I just saw the fire not but half an hour ago as we drove past. There's nothing left...I'm thinking about all the games inside...ugh!

They had some rare games...

This was one of the only reasonably priced game stores left in the area, I can't believe it's gone. I doubt anything survived after the fire, smoke, water and the building falling down. He even had some cool old Nintendo signs and some promotional items. It's heartbreaking.

  • Wow... sorry to hear. Who knows, maybe they will have some games with melted plastic for sale like that Fire N Ice cart that sold on eBay as part of a fire damage lot some time ago.

How does a building not have sprinklers ot fire alarms? Wow...
  • Jeez man that sucks to hear. Hopefully they had insurance for this sort of thing at least.

"South King firefighters were dispatched to the fire about 4:20 a.m. Sunday"

    Hmmm....I wonder....

Well depending on how hot the fire was...idk what melting point games have...they had newer games as well. But again they probably got crushed from the roof collapsing and then there's all the water. It's probably a total wash.

You'd be surprised...people get lazy and stop making sure stuff works. It wasn't exactly an older building but...people ignore important shit like that.

Any game store with that much stuff would have insurance. But I doubt it's going to be rebuilt...losing that many games...there are two more Al's in WA that I know of but idk if they can take a huge loss like that. Which is part of the reason I'm so depressed. I found a lot of good games there and now I only have one game store left that has good prices. I'm trying not to think about how many games were lost...I haven't been in there for a few months so I didn't know what was currently in stock but usually they have an overflowing amount of games. I've even sold games to them...I bet some of my games were in the fire...

  • This sucks to hear. I've gotten some great stuff from that place over the years ... so sad. They were one of my favorites as they were a little more realistic on their prices. Bummer
  • It does indeed suck that there was some rare video game stuff gets engulfed in flames, however I feel for any of the business owners who were impacted by this no matter what they sell.

I'm glad nobody was at least hurt in this. Or at least, I HOPE nobody was injured.
  • When fire sales are done wrong, film at 11

In all seriousness, it does suck but lucky no loss of life.
  • Ugh, this must suck big time. My thoughts go to the owners of the shop and the other affected businesses

Definitely. Even with insurance I imagine that, especially for retro game stores, it's extremely difficult to rebound from this.

Fire is definitely my biggest fear. I can't imagine just losing everything in a matter of hours.

What fires have you seen? Flames can engulf a house in a matter of seconds/minutes. Either way, it is no laughing matter... it must suck to rebound from a house/business fire.

I just meant that fires can typically take awhile to put out once they have spread. So you're waiting all that time just to see what is even salvageable and what is completely lost.

    Ahhh ok.
  • That's sad.
  • I've been there many times and bought a ton of shit over the years from that shop, that really, really sucks.
  • Yeah as I and ZBomber mentioned, it's going to be damn hard to come back from this. Given that they had a massive amount of old games...that takes years of trade ins to build up. As I said earlier they have two others stores so if they really wanted to they could funnel the overflow from both stores into a new store to get it started again...but it sounds like a lot of work and a lot of time hoping you turn a profit.

Not only that, but the areas of the building that didn't have fire may suffer from massive water damage, or chemical extinguishers (electronics can't survive these due to immediate oxidation). Just sucks over all, ya know?

Hopefully nobody was injured (from the sounds of it, there wasn't).

It's incredibly sad that some people are more concerned with the business/profit side of things and "bouncing back" rather than the wellbeing of the owners and employees who may be out of jobs or loss of income that can affect their families. But yes, your gaming needs are more important. Sad.

Every articles been mentioning Subway...which is stupid. If you find the video someone shot of the fire super early on you'll see it started on the opposite end of the strip mall and spread to Subway. It's like these news places are dropping hints that the fire started at Subway. Subway was the only part of the building that still had it's sign and some of a wall when I saw it last.
  • And a new update, I guess I was wrong in saying the building wasn't that old...it was old, so old there were no fire alarms or sprinklers!! Jeez...I hope all those businesses sue whomever owned that building. :/

Didn't read the full thing since I saw it in real life...and watched early videos of it. Hrmp...even if the building was that old...it's such a dangerous thing to do that when you have two businesses that are resturaunts! They need fire alarms and sprinklers! idk how the building owner got away with that. Fishy as hell.

I would say fishy is correct. I am unsure how a building nowadays gets away with something like that. Maybe the law states something different for that area. You figure if there is a loophole to save money, some people will take it. If there isn't one in this case and they were supposed to, then you would imagine there would be a lawsuit.
  • I'm not familiar with the store, anyone have pix of the shop?

Google is your friend. Just Google Al's Music Federal Way and you'll see it.

They are grandfathered in, and code only requires an update if a full remodel is done.

Adding sprinklers and an FA system could be upwards of a few hundred thousand dollars, so most landlords would not drop the cash.
  • I am more worried about Mitch. He was "the guy" that ran that shop. Hooked me up soooo many times both in Tacoma and Federal Way. I just hope he isnt going to be affected to badly not having a job everyday. There is no way they need more than 1 employee at each store each day....so now he may be out of an income.
