You guys think we'll see another cart hit $1K

We all know that prices have gone crazy the last couple years. Some games have seen huge jumps while others saw modest increases.

But few carts out there have ever hit the $1K mark.

Do you guys think we'll see any other cart-only games hit a thousand dollars?

Take Sculptor's Cut. Do you think that game has the right ratio of rarity and hype to ever cost $1K?

My immediate thought is no, but then I remember when I thought Little Samson hit its ceiling at $400....

  • I think the big N64 games will most likely crack 1k. Pretty small and cheap set to collect, down the road the heavy hitters will skyrocket.
  • I think aero fighters will come damn close... Honestly I think it'll surpass 1000 at some point in the distant future. Hagane is another... SNES is a power house and those games basically have everything going for them. Aero fighters would probably be approaching 1000 CAD for a mint cart.
  • Probably will hit 1K at some point:

    Panic Restaurant

    Bonk

    Aero Fighters

    Hagane

    Probably will not:

    Clayfighter SC

The big difference is that Sculptor's cut is just a piece of shit game, and really not that rare compared to some of the other stuff with potential to hit 1K. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if something playable like Worms Armageddon or Bomberman Second Attack overtakes Clayfigther in price at some point, just like Samson did to F2.

Didn't that happen due to authentic F2 carts from South America flooding the USA market?

Partly, but I still think even with all those extra carts Little Samson is still more common.  F2 just isn't as "cool" and doesn't have the hype+"hidden gem" nonsense attached to it.

the South American copies are usually in garbage condition. They'll obviously sell for less, which could bring the average down slightly?
  • looking back at it now. its hard to believe lil samson is at 1k. i remember thinking $500 was crazy and that was only a couple years ago. smh.

panic and bonk keep rising. so has bb2...
  • Zombie Nation is a good NES candidate. Currently worth over 100x its market value from 10 years ago, it's not unreasonable to assume it'll double in another 4-5. By that time it may not be the only one to eclipse $1000, as others have mentioned some good examples already.

Great NES example. I was trying to think of some, and this one's definitely a candidate. Is it really up 10x from 2007?

I was going to say Sculptor's Cut.

I remember buying my cartridge with a $10 bill and getting change in 2006. A few postings on Digitalpress around the same time where folks were afraid they were spending too much on sealed copies for $47.

  • I think Bonks Adventure. That game is awesome and definitely rare
  • I just don't see just don't see hagane or aero fighters ever going to 1000. Hagane had a very small window were copies were going for 800 for cart only but settled to 400
  • Aero fighters is moving up slowly
  • Y'all are going to think I'm crazy but I think dragon fighter and sword master both might hit the 1k mark one day.
  • Good question. I can definitely see some CIB disk games falling into that range as we move closer to them topping out, but it's harder to tell with cartridges because most (all?) of them have already had their big price spike. That said, I can see many factors pushing their values past 1k (inflation, more people becoming collectors, collectors having more spending $$$, decent rarity). Samson is interesting to me, because it seems like the game just kept gaining value while other NES games sort of topped out, causing it to overtake games that it was previously worth less than. Not only was it rare, but it is a fun game that had a good word of mouth around collectors and gamers alike. I don't actively collect N64, but I don't really see that same thing happening with the system, except maybe with Bomberman 64 due to it having a running series. Even then, I'm not sure there's enough rarity there to push it enough. I'm not really feeling any handheld cartridges topping 1k, due to most collectors/people wanting CIB. The Sega systems and Virtual Boy don't really have any games in striking distance, leaving us with the SNES and N64 as the most likely. If I had to make a guess, I'd say one of CFSC or Bomberman 64 making the cut for the N64 and one of Hagane or Aero Fighters topping it for the SNES.
  • Yeah Aero Fighters could be a good guess. From the other perspective though, will Samson be able to hold above $1k? I believe F2 did flirt with $1k off an on (when Mint) but it wasn't able to hold that price level. Most things bubble up then cool off as everyone tries to sell at that price.

On N64, no retail cart will ever be $1k. I'm very confident in that, not quite as rare as NES rares and not as in demand as NES / SNES. N64 is pretty polarizing, many people hate the 3D era, or some others go the PS1 route over N64. Cardboard adds a lot of value but cart only collecting isn't the same appeal as NES / SNES.

There are $1k+ N64 carts though, Zelda Majora's Mask Gray NFR and even Yoshi's NFR has flirted with that level. Just not retail stuff and Sculptor's Cut will never come close.
  • Is anyone aware of a comparable hobby where items have seen such a dramatic value increase in such a short period of time, and then maintained those prices? Like, excluding "fad" hobbies such as Beanie Babies.
  • Based on my interaction with collectors in the wild, you either love or can't stand the N64. I've had enough sh!t talk thrown my way in person to know that NES and SNES reign supreme when it comes to desirable Nintendo consoles.

The person that wants to go after Zelda Majora's Mask Grey NFR and Yoshi's NFR will be the type of person that also want's CIB in good to great shape. Because of that, I agree 100% with what you all have said about CFSC, Worms, and Bomberman 2nd Attack loose carts.

Nope, you're not crazy! I have been saying the same thing for a few years, that they are extremely tough to find, especially CIB.

I will also add Power Blade 2, Ubisoft Indiana Jones, Zombie Nation, and Cowboy Kid to the list. These all have nowhere to go but up.
  • Hagane for sure. Unsure how rare it truly is, but its certainly saught after and incredibly fun to play.

I dont own sculptor cut and refuse to pay the price because how bad the game is. I have no regret dropping hundreds on my hagane and aerofighter !
  • I have the ubisoft Indiana Jones loose of course. Powerblade 2 would be the only one I'm after. I've played cowboy kid and zombie nation both and was not impressed by either and honestly don't understand why such the high value. Alot of people say zombie nation is a rare game, I disagree. I just think it's highly sought after due to the nostalgia put on it by the YouTubers.
  • kid klown has jumped $200 in like a year

Any reason you'd think Aero Fighters over Hagane? Seems like Hagane has the hype factor over Aero Fighters.

I paid less than $150 for my Hagane cart and I got Aero Fighters in a trade for a bunch of doubles. I don't care if either hits $1K. Just wanted to know the reasoning behind your guess.

a game being fun doesn't have much to do with value. It's mostly just hype
  • We will see many

    many

    MANY

    carts hit $1k.

    And percieved (or actual) rarity
  • Besides popular stuff like NES games that might keep going up if this all continues (Panic Restaurant, etc.) I'm trying to think of of super desirable expensive carts.

Mine Storm II? Darius Alpha? BattleSphere? I'm not sure enough interest is there to bump loose copies up to $1000. They're rare but for niche collectors with deep pockets already, so those people probably want complete copies. I certainly don't think Sculptor's Cut is rare enough to ever hit $1000. Maybe with decades of inflation. An N64 Test Cart has traded hands at $1k+ right? Not theoretical value or declined offers, those are definitely already $1000+ right?

Trying to think of desirable homebrew too. What about 8-Bit Xmas 2008? $1000+? Maybe that's on the radar
  • I'm just a gamer at heart I guess, but I'm not going to shell out 450 to 600$ for a shitty game like Zombie Nation. I buy them to play them not buy them to say "ooh look at what I got!"
  • But hey to each their own..... I don't knock down anyone who scores a great find or a rare title for sure.
