Mine Storm II? Darius Alpha? BattleSphere? I'm not sure enough interest is there to bump loose copies up to $1000. They're rare but for niche collectors with deep pockets already, so those people probably want complete copies. I certainly don't think Sculptor's Cut is rare enough to ever hit $1000. Maybe with decades of inflation. An N64 Test Cart has traded hands at $1k+ right? Not theoretical value or declined offers, those are definitely already $1000+ right?

Trying to think of desirable homebrew too. What about 8-Bit Xmas 2008? $1000+? Maybe that's on the radar

That's already happened (twice I think?)

I think a Garage Cart will set you back that much now too.

  • I think it's interesting to note that the higher some games go the less possible buyers there are. For example I don't have Hagane and it's on my list to get but if it hits $1000 then I won't buy it. I know there are lots of people that don't agree and would pay it but everyone has a price where they WONT pay it. $1000 is that price for me. The less carts that hit $1K the better IMO
  • Silent Service

Oh, you meant $1K in value, not finding 1K of a single game?

Probably something like Aero Fighters or Hagane but I'd say it's unlikely

Well lets move down the line. What's the going rate on an 8-Bit Xmas 2009? How long before someone takes out a mortgage because they have to complete their Xmas set? I thought about Garage Cart but figured it was already stupid priced.

Desirable homebrew is great for spiking prices stupid high. Built in collector interest and super low print runs. I bet there's some Colecovision homebrew that could be mentioned in this thread.
  • Been collecting long enough to remember when Stadium Events could be had for under $1000. Even then you had collectors that would scoff at shelling out that much for a game that could be enjoyed for $1-$2 as World Class Track Meet. Playability is not as important in the big picture.

    Zombie Nation is not shitty!!

If Sneak N Peek didn't get a reissue as part of the 4 in 1, that would be my next bet (but not for a while).

8 Bit Xmas cart prices have all slid over the last year.  Not crashed, but definitely a dip.

Any reason you'd think Aero Fighters over Hagane? Seems like Hagane has the hype factor over Aero Fighters.

I paid less than $150 for my Hagane cart and I got Aero Fighters in a trade for a bunch of doubles. I don't care if either hits $1K. Just wanted to know the reasoning behind your guess.

Hagane already had it's massive spike and has pulled back repeatedly, Aero Fighters has been a more sustainable slow increase over time.  Aero Fighters is also significantly rarer.

I remember passing on sealed Haganes (plural) for $300 as recently as 2009, boy did I screw that one up.  There was even a VGA 85 OBO at $350 that lasted way too long then.

Yeah, maybe not "crashed" but I'd say "tanked".  Feels like those had peaked around late 2014/early 2015.  Many people going for a set then, no sellers.  Then plenty became available "for the right price" and demand has stagnanted.

Try collecting all of the Maddens, not a fun task.  Well when we're at 8bit Xmas 2030 the amount of people fully pursuing the set will diminish (as people sell out for their $1,000 cart) or stay the same at best.  Even someone new to the scene now will buy 8bit Xmas 2017 for retail, look at a 4 digit price tag on 2008 and shrug off the set.  Only ones doing the set are the ones who got in originally or bought into the hype.

  • Nah not really! I just play young Indiana Jones if I want to play fun factor
  • I actually bought the ubisoft Indiana on accident before I started going after the gems and whatnot. I thought it was the young Indiana Jones chronicles! How naive of me at 34 been playing Nintendo all my life and didn't know the difference from these two!
  • Ah, well, I hope you got Ubi Indy cheap. I hate that game with a passion. Probably the worst licensed NES game not made by THQ.
  • Sorry buddy I just disagree....

I like hearing things like Hagane has pulled back repeatedly.  Keep the drop coming!

  • But the again your talking to a guy who's playing Karnov as we speak hahaha!
  • Holly Jolly NES Mix, if only because I have one. Get that hype train going matt

Funny, I was literally just thinking about that last night.

Its actually a port of a PC game.  Funny enough the gameboy version is 'better' ,with cutscenes and stuff.

That one's up there, I'll give you that. But at least it doesn't look backported from a shitty Gameboy game.

Last Starfighter is in the mix, too.

To stay on topic, I think if prices trend ever upward for a few more years, we'll see some of the current $300-$500 games (Panic, PB2, BB2, etc) come close. Especially if people keep going for fullsets. The demand will just see to it.

Don't short sell it. It's Holly Jolly NES Mix 2016. The first year it was ever released. Sure to be the next 8-bit Xmas 2008 now.
  • Well I'm out for a bit I'm going fishing with the wife. Holler at y'all in a lil while!!!!!!!!!!!
  • How come nobody is mentioning the SNES Competition carts?
  • Musha or Defender of Centy for the Genesis? Probably only for CIB though.

Does anyone think there will be a disc-based game that goes for over $1K?
  • Because those are already in the ~$1000 range. That and some people claim that they "don't count" as part of the set.
