You guys think we'll see another cart hit $1K

  • Sure, the half of the AES library that hasn't hit the 1k mark yet.

Does anyone think there will be a disc-based game that goes for over $1K?

Disc only?  Seval Disc based CIB have alreayd hit 1K+: Keio for Sega CD, Dynastic Hero for TG-CD.   NBA Elite 11 for PS3 is probably well over $1000 now.

I can't see any of those ever hitting 1K for a loose disc though.

  • No, if anything i expect a big box of some of the rare released snes games to show up and destroy some value.

I know there are lots of people that don't agree and would pay it but everyone has a price where they WONT pay it. $1000 is that price for me. The less carts that hit $1K the better IMO

This is the exact reason why I will never buy little Samson at it's current price. I'll trade some stuff for it, but shelling out a grand+ for just one game is nuts. I also don't go for full sets so it's not like I HAVE to have it. I really just want to play little Samson because it looks pretty fun but as for now it eludes me. That's okay though since I have more than enough games to keep me busy for the rest of my life.

That would be a more interesting discussion, games on non-Nintendo systems that go for over a grand.

Genesis Outback Joey is a 4 figure cart too.
  • Aerofighters has my vote. Hard-to-find and even harder-to-find in great condition. Plus, it's a two-player game that is quite enjoyable to play. I would not be surprised at all if it makes it to $1K. SNES is awesome in general and it is a fun and rare game that is not a competition cart.

    Edit: phrasing.

It's also ridiculously short. I picked up Aero Fighters for my set at a convention, and my friend who played it with me that night after getting it said "Well, that converted to about $20 per minute of game play."

Strangely, I ended up with a dupe of it...

  • That's because the dipshits that ported it to the US removed the second loop for some stupid reason. The original game, Sonic Wings, is the version to own if you actually give a crap about what you are playing. Of course, that's like 1% of the people buying these games, even people who supposedly "just want to play it". If you "just want to play it", why do you care about the $600, crippled version of the game?
  • I remember when 2k for stadium events was crazy because it's such a shit game

Carts going for close to 10k now... hindsight is 20/20
  • I could see Summer Carnival 92 Recca hit it if Famicom players become more readily available/ people are fed up with the crazy prices of the NES market.

Maybe NBA Elite 11 in a few years.   All it takes is a decent sized news story on cancelled games, and here come all the people with more money than sense.   I think then you would have somebody shell that out to just play it?

  • What licensed NES games are over the $1k mark, other then SE, LS, and F2? If it's just those three then I would say Bonk and Panic Restaurant. Otherwise Aero Fighters or one of the test carts for NES.

Licensed loose it's just SE and LS (F2 is about $700 right now.) If we count unlicensed, Cheetahmen II, two of the three Panesians (Hot Slots is ~$850) and Myriad 6-in-1 join the club.

  • Disc based games headed that direction:

    Sega Saturn:

    Panzer Dragon Saga

    Magic Knight Rayearth

    Sega CD:

    Keio

    PS2:

Rule of Rose (a ways to go) but definitely headed upwards

    PS1:

I can name a lot of games headed for 400-500 but nothing even close to 1000.
  • And personally, I am shocked how NES prices have risen. WTF, I just haven't followed prices for some time now and holy shit things just keep going up. Even stuff like Swamp Thing is now close to 200 for cart only. Seriously, WTF.

    Probably will not:

The big difference is that Sculptor's cut is just a piece of shit game, and really not that rare compared to some of the other stuff with potential to hit 1K. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if something playable like Worms Armageddon or Bomberman Second Attack overtakes Clayfigther in price at some point, just like Samson did to F2.

SC might not be nearly as playable as these other rare titles (Worms, BM 2nd), but it will always be, or will always be perceived as, the rarest title in the N64 set.  My guess is that alone means it will remain the most desirable and therefore the most expensive in the N64 set, and likely at some point reach $1000+.  There are likely still many N64 collectors to enter the hobby yet.

  • I noticed a bit of a jump in price for PAL Mr Gimmick lately. It's getting closer.

Is Rule of Rose not a mostly-hype machine like Earthbound or Dokapon Kingdom? I don't have much PS2 experience, but that game is ALL over Ebay and I've seen it locally multiple times (at high prices). It seems crazy compared to something like Keio or Flintstones 2 which I almost never see. I know copies for sale is not equal to rarity or value though.

    You actually enjoy Indy Ubisoft?

Maybe im the only one, but I really enjoy indy ubisoft. Beat it once. Its insanely rewarding. Beat it again. Its much easier when you know all of the potential pitfalls, but still insanely rewarding. It also covers the major scenes/story of the movie well to give it the nostalgia factor. I beat ubi over and over again, but taito hasnt kept my interest enough to play more than a level or two. And I gave it plenty of tries. Crazy to say as Im a huge taito fan, but its a good time! Helps a lot too to get the whip and then the gun.

Rule of Rose isn't going any higher unless one of the asshat youtube channels decree's it the best horror game in the history of gaming.

My three game exchanges sells them for $150 (One is CIB but is in ass condition and the other two are disc only) and with the more copies they have, the lower the price. I'm waiting until it hits $100 than I'll buy one. I can't see paying more than $100 for a game unless something like Dino Peak or Little Samson is involved otherwise thats taking the hobby down an unheathy road.

  • Panic Restaurant and Bonk are likely candidates IMO, although I'm a little skeptical. But then I never thought Samson would crack $1K, let alone before F2. However I see Cowboy Kid and Dragon Fighter at the same level as Bonk and PR in the near future, perhaps even Kid Klown

Too many people are just now getting into collecting, and others are just fininishing their collections. Obviously there are only so many Legit games out in the wild so prices continue to rise, meanwhile more bootlegs are made each day. Apply that to the Increasing amount of coverage classic games are getting from areas like social Media, TV and Youtube you have an "unsatisfied demand".

We will continue to go into these dark ages especially if more Indy developers continue to create popular "Retro Inspired" games like Shovel Knight and Undertale.

  • Kinda surprised that the Gold Zelda Game Boy Camera isn't $1K.

I'd be interested in what PS1 games you think could hit the $400 - 500 range. I've got all the expensive stuff already and don't see anything like Team Buddies, Tron Bonne, or Klonoa ever getting that high. If your talking about something like the assassin case for elemental gearbolt that's already well over 1000.

Yeah it's alright, Ive only played the ubisoft version of it. It's not like I shelled out 125$ like they're asking for it now which I would never ever pay. I play the young Indiana Jones chronicles more than anything. Cheap and fun and has quite some skill to beat.
  • Panic Restaurant cartridge will be flintstones level at some point and then one of those will be the next $1,000 game. Aero Fighters Snes has to get to the $1,000 mark at some point. Sega Genesis is hard to figure out. Maybe a nice condition cib Crusader of Centy.

I personally don't look at the assassin's case as anything more than a promo item. But the titles to name a few off the top of my head that have potential are:

(And I'm not predicting or suggesting they ever will hit 400 dollars, just speculating on the way things have gone)

    Psychic detective longbox
    Shadow tower
    Koudelka
    Rtype delta
    Klonoa
    Tail concerto

    To name a few

I could see R-type creeping in the $175 range as it starting to hit $100 pretty consistantly, but most of those games already saw a pretty good jump in the past year/year and a half, especially shadow tower.
