Price increase for common games?

I was reading the thread about games hitting the 1k mark and it got me to thinking about the more common games. What do you think games like Rygar and Faxanadu will be going for in 5 years? Will any of the $30 games hit $100 in the near future?

nes games will fall back to $5 in five years when no one gives a shit anymore.

I want to believe this. But to be honest, I'm not sure I'll give a shit in five years, either.

  • Every time we go down this path the bubble burst is predicted. Going back 5 years ago people were saying the same thing. Now look at the market which everything worth a damn double and tripled in value. Now I'm not saying everything will continue on the same path but as of right now there are no indications it's going to stall out just yet. My guess is some of those $30 games will hit the $50 mark maybe even $60 but $100 is a stretch. Some $50 and $60 games are likely to rise up to the $100 mark.
  • So, the bubble will burst when people stop wondering when it's going to burst.
  • Can't see common $30-$40 games hitting 3 figures. It's too much of a jump. Unless there is a huge spike like a few years back or an anniversary of a certain series it's a long bow to draw.

A $60-$70 game, like Super Double Dragon, which tbf isn't common, for example has more potential to rise to 3 figures. (PAL prices)
  • Some common games will increase in value, and some will not.
  • Some people might disagree, but IMO we've already hit the peak for common NES games. Take a look at the VGPC charts for Contra, Mega Man 2, & SMB3:

    https://www.pricecharting.com/game/nes/contra

    https://www.pricecharting.com/game/nes/mega-man-2

    https://www.pricecharting.com/game/nes/super-mario-bros-3?q=super+mario+bros+3

Each game hit their all-time high a year ago and have lost a quarter or a third of their loose cart value since then. We've reached the point where most NES collectors/enthusiasts now own a copy of most common staple games and prices are slowly deflating to reflect that.

I think we're at the phase of NES collecting where:

    1. More collectors own/are selling the dirt common/staple NES games, so prices are slowly dropping on loose cart prices.

    2. Already high value titles (Little Samson, etc) are out of reach for most NES collectors, so prices have flat-lined.

    3. Collectors are looking to buy uncommon titles before they are priced out of reach, spiking the price of uncommon titles.

We're already seeing the effect of number three with games like Kid Clown. I think the battleground for the next couple of years is going to be the current $50-200 NES game market; people will be fighting to get their hands on uncommon titles before they spike.
  • ^^^ well said.. i been collecting and playing nes games for 30 years. And seen a huge change over the years, but the past 2 years have exploded!! There has been record high sales, and most importantly Volume!!

For example, i remmember when i was completing my nes loose set years ago, i would search for titles like, swamp thing, kid klown, casino kid 2, to mention a few.. and would see none or at times maybe 1 or 2. Today, you can almost see every game posted or if your patient find it sooner than later.

Thats one of the reasons for spike, availability, condition, and many new "collector..itis". yes thats a word. (Meaning i have to get it now).

Anyway, my 2 cents. Good conversations here. Look forward to see the market in incomimg years. Happy Hunting.
  • I've seen swamp thing on eBay rise in price at least 70 dollars in the past 6 months. That's just ridiculous.....

It's 2072 at the 71st annual MGC, the only vintage game show left at this point. It's full of a few old men wondering why no one new cares about their Nintendo tapes and wondering how they can get the kids interested in their 1980s childhood rather than their 2060s childhood. One old man leans over a table of entirely VGA graded games being treated as artifacts from another age to ask the dealer "Did... the bubble burst yet?".

Swamp Thing isn't really common. In fact, it's surprising it has only shot up recently.

  • I agree with you how it's hard to find at times.... I guess I better grab me a loose cart of it soon.
  • I would say anything marked R5 or 6 on the rarity scales (NA and elsewhere) that's affordable and you want it, get it now. Those are the games that have the most volatile value. Most R4s are common enough, IMO (some might spike, though) and most R7s are already at $100.

Stuff that's common and desirable, your Contras, Punch-Outs, and Zeldas, are pretty steady.

A lot of super commons have risen a few bucks, though.
  • I got all of those I'm into the gems list, I snagged up shatterhand and whomp em and and some other games recently
  • Gargoyles quest 2 was a good snag too
  • Guys... guys... use your god damn minds. Prices dont go up and stay up. No one will buy common shit for a lot because theyll have them already OR no one will care or theyll get back into circularion. I hate this games will always rise. Markets always crash (eventually) and stuff thats desirable will always hold value. Period. I wanna know who the morons are that are over spending on commons. And i tell you what, those are the first people to sell everything they have. Seen plenty of people recently go in hard then buy and everdrive and sell.

I've been hearing this for years. I'm still waiting for this crash so I can finish my collection.

I would say most people overspending on commons have/will never hear(d) of an everdrive. Again, people on this site truly overestimate the knowledge of the average gamer/collector etc. Hell, even if some bother to look on eBay they don't understand the difference between sold and unsold listings. I also find it funny how petty this hobby is. Someone who wants to play Goldeneye of SMB3 and buy a few games probably won't care that much if the games are $40 or $20. It's a one time purcahse for them... they're not sitting at home playing the markets on eBay all day wondering if they paid $10 too much.
  • Yea but those are solid titles that are always priced even. I think what people here are describing are games like Section Z, Goal or Top Gun 2
  • Why do we continue these types of threads lol

It's not anything specific to this particular hobby. I'm assuming the video game collecting community is comprised of the same sorts of individuals as any other collecting community: nostalgia collectors who could care less about a market, casual collectors with hard spending limits (which I think makes up the majority of every collecting community), serious collectors (who will seek out the rare finds, wait for best deals, and spend the big bucks), and then there are investors. Investors are a unique group in any hobby community; many times they're not even interested in the hobby beyond a potential source of revenue -- and, despite not being a good representative the respective fanbase, they often tend to be the most outspoken and intrusive.
  • THEY ARE ALL WORTH MONIES!!!!

Not sure about 'priced even' as SMB3 and GE have both gone up here locally. Those games were $5-$10 at most before the boom and now I see GE selling regularly for near $40 (which is way too much imo). If we're talking about the truly overproduced, crap games, then, no, I don't think they will ever increase in any significant way. You basically have to give away these games (same for common sports titles). They may be up to about $5 for simply being a NES game as the days of games for $1 or less is no longer a reality for any title.
  • Aside from stores im still seeing em around 15 give or take a few bucks

We had a mini-Atwood thread last week with the douche buyer he had to deal with.   Had a mod-hate thread a little before that; there's a couple "is this fake" threads floating about.

Just missing the anti-VGA thread and I'll fill my bingo card!

  • Prices are very slowly dropping for the Nes, and I believe they will continue to drop. Yes, some sought after games will rise slightly, but prices are dropping. I sold my entire collection and now have a modded Nes classic with all my Snes and Nes games. I think many others will be doing the same with Retropie/Nes classic. I think prices drops will continue to drop.
  • If a games price hasn't gone anywhere in the past 5 years, it probably never will. I'd be more worried about their CIB prices
