Montana Special Election

I'm assuming he will be the first politician to assault someone, win the office, take the oath, and then get convicted?

Oh what strange Trumpian times we live in

  • I've no clue what you're talking about, alas, and thus am not able to follow it.
  • TLDR; local billionaire and former boss to many people I know, including my wife, is running for office for the 2nd time in a year, and decided to have a wrestling match hours before the ballots open

It was all over every news source since yesterday.

GOP candidate Greg Gianforte assaulted a reporter yesterday who was asking questions about the GOP healthcare bill. The reported recorded the audio of the encounter which you can listen to at the link: http://money.cnn.com/2017/05/24/media/montana-gop-greg-gianforte/index.html

Politics is officially professional wrestling now. I wouldn't be surprised if the assault actually improved Gaianforte's chances of getting elected.

  • I still don't get how you guys keep having people with zero political or even law background thinking they can run your country. It's... weird. I'll look up this story now; been busy so haven't read the news the past few days.

I heard the Rock could run for president next time... and believe it or not, I think he could be a decent candidate.

Elections are popularity contests, nothing new.  Ronald Regan was a movie star.

I always thought Regan was such a weird thing lol. Like... Is it THAT easy to just say "hey I wanna try out for president"? Do the parties just choose a face they think can win the election to get themselves seats or something? I don't really understand politics.
  • I definitely hadn't heard of this. Here news are still all about Brasilia burning since yesterday night.

Reagan was previously the governor of California and led an active political advocacy life, so he wasn't just a pretty face or some yahoo running for the Hell of it. He had the charisma, but he also had experience in politics and public service.

I'd like to think that Trump (a President with no prior political/military service) is going to be an aberration. I think his tenure will finally end the "we need a business man running this country!" mantra that's been repeated for thirty-or-so years.

Do most countries not require you to be a natural born citizen to hold the highest office?

  • From what I've heard, up to 70% of the state voted early so they voted before this choke-slam. I'm hoping that we don't get another hyper-masculine rich white guy in the House

We probably will. From henceforth, all politics will be done via bodyslams

I wonder how much Trump paid, as a sponsor, to get to have the upper-hand in that kind of wrestling match.

  • Everybody is lying to a degree, and everyone believes that what they say is the truth. We've become the Jerry Springer show government. I'm done watching.
  • Well, he won.

Guess if you don't like someone, just body slam them.
  • You broke my glasses... and you body slammed me...

  • I don't know how much of impact this news was ever going to have on the election results. Majority of the state had already voted absentee and Republicans have repeatedly shown they don't care what their candidates do or say as long as they are on their team. Remember when Trump said "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters." He was probably right.

Yeah, this exactly.  Most of the state had already voted. A majority of the state consists of rural populations and the house seat has been republican for over 20 years..... almost a shoe in.

  • That certainly plays into modern/mainstream campaigning.

And hey, Montana finally gets into the news.  Free press!
