Why are video game collectors so whiny when it comes to price hikes?

  • We all just want to live that self entitled north American lifestyle. Oddly enough you don't see people getting butt hurt that they can't afford a Ferrari or a jet pack.

People just like to complain about something. If you're not complaining what the heck are you going to talk about?

Discuss.   I really don't know what it is about this group.   I suspect that its because it skews young and includes some collectors that don't see themselves as such (?) but man, if this place was a physical space I'd pick it up and move it next to a Kleenex factory and a Massengill plant.

There's no possibility of having a decent discussion when you start your thread off by calling people "whiny" and "man children."

actually i'd say it went pretty well!

First people DO read rare comics, some people enjoy that.    If I bought an action 1 tomorrow by some stroke of luck, I'd read it immediately.

I have to call "bullshit" on that one

Unless you are talking about some ass-condition copy.

A deteriorated copy is more likely to sustain further damage from handling than one in decent shape. I'd rather read a Fine or Very Good copy than one in Poor condition with pages that will crumble more no matter how careful you are. Mint might be another story, but that segment isn't my interest to begin with.

Yeah, that 2.0 to 6.0 kind of range are ideal readers, I used a 4.0 in my example for exactly that reason

Although, it all depends on the book as I'm sure you know.    An 0.5 can be a great reader candidate if it has supple pages, and a 2.0 might be a poor candidate for handling if it has brittle pages.
  • I'm a long time gamer and fairly new to "collecting" if you will, but I have the finances finally to be able to buy stuff up that I loved from my childhood. I have been amazed at how expensive games can get but for me I'm in it to buying games that I love so I can play them. I mean yea its nice to collect the boxes and manuals to have a full game so I can sit in on a shelf, but its still going to be taken out and played authentically.

If you think a game is priced too high then move on. As with any collecting, certain items are going to be high due to supply and demand and that's kind of the whole point of collecting anything isn't it? When you find some "gem" you shell out the money for it.
  • I enjoy witnessing the salt mine that happens when someone can't get a game. And instead of saving their money or looking elsewhere they come here to bitch about it. On the bright side it does give us something to laugh at.
  • I didnt bother to read all 4 pages but I think it comes down to a couple of things to me personally.

They're upset that the ones with the money have it easy. You can spent years looking for a game for the right price, finally find it, then someone comes across and says 'pff ill give you more', and there it goes (and also justifies their prices or even inflates them more). Its a fairness. And also these games can STILL be found for cheap if you look around. But too many small-time reseller chumps are making it harder, buying out everything just to resell it. They're not 'collectors' or own a store, they just know they can get a lot of money out of it (at times) and its disingenuous. Its not for them, its "Look at this Craigslist score! All for sale". I think that adds to it because usually those people arent the ones looking to cut a deal, but to squeeze every dime they can out of em. The more PROFIT that can me made from these games, the more problems its gonna cause. If no one can find them in garage sales for .50 cents anymore, I dont think people would care as much if the price of something is high, because you just cant find it anywhere. Its a complicated answer.
  • Sorry I am creating problems for you but if I see something I really want I am going to pay whatever I think it's worth to aquire it. I don't really do the whole resale thing as I think I'm screwing someone else out of having an item they would really appreciate.
  • I'm not 100% on this, I haven't been to any magic the gathering sites, but I'm fairly certain that that hobby is going through a similar situation. I saw some auctions and couldn't believe how much beta cards are going for. Even up to stronghold, it seems that prices have skyrocketed. Man, thats another lesson learned. Thanks mom and dad for needing that attic space so badly that you goodwilled my shit, cuz the empty bedroom I left you just wasn't enough. I had 4 of everything that mattered. Fuck. Anyway, I don't think it's just video games, it seems anything thats nostalgic to the 30-40 age group is peaking, it's just that time.

  • I think the responses so far have been too focused on the "whiny" poor/cheapass collector, who wants everything and feels entitled to own everything. Agreed, these are the whiny collectors who need to accept that anything desirable will come at a cost. Understanding market trends is the basic fundamental of any collecting hobby.

However, there is another type of "whiny" collector. The type that sees sellers going full silly with jacking prices up for common tripe, or sellers charging a bazillion dollars for something that is "rare".

There needs to be some common sense from both buyer and seller ends.
  • Prices are prices, it is what it is. However It's annoying when you have great sites that provide average market price for games based on sales and you can't even find these games at that price because sellers just make up a price they want. Yes they can do what they want and you have to wait for a deal but that doesn't make it any less annoying.

You are leaving out the collector's that have moved on from the console market and into pinball, art and arcade's.

Since those people are in 4,5 and even 6 figure's item's, they get upset when they see console collector's bring up price's and instead of easily ignoring said threads, some time's they like to throw out a few insults under the guise of discussion due to disgust of said topic's being brought up.

NA has had the same thread's remade over time since the beginning and instead of being civil some old timers get so sick of seeing the same thing happen again and decide to throw a few rock's instead of just letting people either get something off their chest or repeat a opinion they have to new user's.

I think we generally want a nice fun community here.
  • Everybody needs to vent now and then. When it overtakes the forums and is present constantly, it's tiring. And again, the same issues are faced by other hobbyists who don't seem to complain nearly as loudly. Yes this thread is a backlash vent on my part but it's also some genuine curiosity. Why so many tears from this group in particular? And I think we had a good discussion on that
  • Four or five threads over the course of two day's is not a take over, if it was a week straight, yeah it might be a take over.

As long as i have been here, i have not seen a real change in the mainstream's mind set. You have nothing to worry about, if anything we should stop with the blatant insults against people we do not agree with.
  • Mkay, well, you're entitled to your opinion.
  • The people who whine about price hikes should have to pay original retail price for ALL games, then.

Have fun buying Xenophobe, or Magic Johnson's Fast Break for $60-$80.

That's still cheaper than what NES games were new if you factor in inflation.

Haha.... good point! Then I need to adjust those prices!

Using the first online inflation calculator I found... I guess we're looking at $90-$120! This was from:

    http://www.bankofcanada.ca/rates/related/inflation-calculator/
  • Yeah, that's consistent with what I've seen. You got to remember in the 80s there was a ton of inflation every year. I remember buying the greatest video game of all time, Batman, in 1990 for $50. That'd be $95 today.

Super Mario Bros in 1985, if it was still around $50, would be $112 today.

Haha, jokes.... good god. Imagine paying $100+ plus for that hunk of junk? Yeesh.

Haha, well... we all have our "quirks".

I, for example, think of Little Mermaid as a platformer, haha.

    Hahaha, but aren't we all?

I mean, really. Not only do we collect old ass video games/pieces of paper & cardboard, but we go on the internet and talk about it!

That's my favourite type of weirdo, haha.

Again, just being silly. I don't think we're weirdos. If so, I would hate to be "normal".

People like all sorts of crazy shit. I like video games. At least it's not meth.
  • All I know is cheese prices have skyrocketed as a result of this thread.
  • There are games that I want that are very expensive, but I'm not chomping at the bit to get them nor complaining about how much they cost. I get all my games from the wild, so if I happen across a rarity for a cheap price, cool. If not, I'm not losing any sleep.

The fact that rising prices means less good finds in the wild, depending on where you live, and more competition for those finds that are left, are more reasons for this upswing of collector griping.

I really respect Bronty and i think it is beneath him to create the OP he did, if it was anyone else i would not even show up and respond to this topic.

Me and Bronty do not agree on a lot of thing's but we have had pretty good discussion's on the forums over the year's, one thing that has remained was us being civil.

That might not mean a thing to you but it does to me.

Either way i still think Bronty is a great guy and do consider him a friend, i can understand how he feel's about this topic and do not fault him for venting.
