How Important is the Hobby to you on a Scale of 1-10?

How important is the hobby to you, and where does it rank in your list of priorities?  



Hobby can mean whatever you want it to mean.  Whether it is collecting, gaming, reselling, yard sailing, browsing eBay, posting on forums, or looking at social media or youtube videos.  Consider that as a whole, how much time you spend doing it, and how important is that in the grand scheme of life?



Personally, I'd say it is about a 5 / 10 for me right now.  I'm in the middle of a busy year but as a married guy with kids there's only so much time for me to dedicate to it.  I've never been to a convention, never been into yard sales and even hunting online (my main method) is just something I do to kill time, not something I prioritize.  Same with gaming, I get addicted to an exciting new game like anyone else but can go weeks without playing anything at all.  Even when it comes to the collection, while I enjoy it dearly, I know that most of it is expendable if it got in the way of other life priorities.  



I've also noticed that it can come in waves.  While I'm a 5/10 right now, if I was actively completing a set, or if I just found some smoking deal, then those can motivate you to be more active.  On the flip side, if you're busy vacationing or stressed out at work, collecting may just be an afterthought.

    right now, id say around 7-8/10, as most of my expendable money goes into this hobby, and i spend a lot of time playing the games i buy.

    I'm going to go with a 3. I enjoy it and it's fun... but I'd be fine if I stopped right now. I'm really pushing hard on Atari at the moment because they're very easy to obtain and it's around the skill level that my 3 year old can pick up the controller and kind of get what's going on. So right now the collecting aspect isn't very strong but I do still get to enjoy it with my daughter from time to time and I try to put in at least a little bit of play time everyday to go for some high scores. But again, I could stop purchasing games right now and still be happy with what I've done.

    It's hard to gauge since money's not easy for me to come by and every day is different. I'm just as committed to it as my money allows me to be. lol

    I'm saying a 7. Not more important then responsiblities but I like to devote a certain of time each day to playing a game. It doesn't always happen but I search a lot online.

    If this is in terms of the video games hobby compared to other hobbies, I'd say 8/10, I don't have very many hobbies. I've always liked soldering things (consoles and LCD screens mostly), but that's been video game-centric.



    This may sound odd coming from a gamer, but I do actually collect something, older computer hardware. I like iMac/Power Mac computers and exotic PC computers. I prefer laptops over desktops due to lack of space.

    For a long time it was really high, just because I had no responsibilities and mostly disposable income. I would spend tons of time doing research, searching for deals, discussing with people etc. Now the priority is figuring out my career, I'm at that age where there is very little time for much else. This past month I've been working at least 60 hours a week, I will occasionally squeeze in some game time but its getting tougher and tougher.



    Only thing I really want right now is a powerpak, anything else I buy is just nice to have but certainly not necessary

    i'll go with 7 as well, i haven't even bought anything yet this year...

    i have some other priorities i like more atm.



    i won't restart with buying things until september,

    but i do keep track of offered items, YT videos / AVGN / forums / etc...

    just not really buying anything right now...

    down to a 1 for me nowadays.



    Wife, kid, house, bills, house projects, it's summer so it's pool season, and so much else going on I rarely think about games or collecting anymore.

    Man, wish I had a pool. Just have a 3 foot inflatable one for my daughter... who doesn't want to use it.

    It's probably at an 8 or a 9 at the moment, though I am hoping to burnout during the course of writing the book I am working on.



    The above may sound a bit odd, but for me, while I enjoy game collecting (and then sometimes sitting down and playing a game), I sometimes also wish that I woke up one day, simply not caring about the stuff anymore. I see so many people while out and about, many of whom surely were into these games as children or teens, and yet don't care much at all about it anymore, having moved onto other things. I sometimes wish I could let go in the same way, and if I had a chance to let my whole collection go in one fell swoop for a decent chunk of cash, I probably would.

    Right now, a 4 I think. I still check NA, but don't post as often. I still enjoy my collection, but it's just been collecting dust for a little while now.



    Simply have gotten back into current gen big time. It's cyclical, so I'll probably be back to NES after an affair with the PS4.

    I'd say 7. It'd likely be more like 5 if my current life situation allowed me to focus more on 'noisier' pursuits (e.g. guitar).

    I give myself a 5: The hobby interests me, but active collecting has taken a back seat. I'm not really hunting for anything in particular, and I've scaled back thrift store/yard sale hunting. Most of my collection is pretty much collecting dust right now, the only system I'm still working towards adding carts to is NES.

    I voted a 6. It is my only hobby and I love it but at the end of the day if I HAD to walk away from it I could (but it wouldn't be easy).

    I have 3 hobbies fishing video games and aquariums. I spread my time out between them. If the weather is bad I spend my time on video games or aquariums. If the weather is good I spend my time fishing. Video games are my least important hobby. If I had to choose I'd rather be outside on the water.

    What if you were playing a fishing game on a handheld while you're waiting for a bite out on a boat... that perhaps has an aquarium on it?

    I wish I could dedicate some time to music. I just can't. Probably haven't picked my guitar up in months. I've got an album that's been half finished for like 2 years now.

    Maybe a 6-7. I spend a lot of free time and money gaming and actively collecting but if my house burned down I'd be more likely to switch to emulators than collect it all over again.

    Collecting is probably a 6 for me right now. And that's only because I forced the PS2 set onto my radar. I feel compelled to finish it because I hate telling people I have 82.15% of the set. If I wasn't into PS2 right now, collecting would be like a 3. So many other things come first now. I have a wife, 2 kids, a huge house which means every issue becomes huge, hockey, and no shortage of things that I should be doing at any given moment. I'll still stop by to see a local sale or stop in a game store, but I'm not really going out of my way trying to find them like I did in the past.



    Gaming is a solid 1. I barely enjoy video games anymore. I sit down, pop in a classic or new game, but just lose interest within 20 minutes. I hope it becomes more important to me because I just finished my basement and it's very gaming oriented  .



    NA is probably a 3 for me. I check in a couple times a day and read through a thread or 2. Post randomly.

    I'd give it a solid 7. It's an important part of my life and I'd certainly miss it if it were gone but it is by no means top priority.

    I guess it depends how you look at it; I'd say I'm a 3/10 engagement wise right now, just not that interesting in any of my collections ATM, that said, I have spent enough time and money on them over the years that they are important to me. So... I am not engaged ATM but what I do have remains important to me.   I am more interested in toning down the collecting for a while and maybe buying a pinball table a year for the next little while to play on.
