Best Order to watch Star Wars for the first time

  • Didn't Lucas tell Hayden to be robotic? I've always found the criticism of the acting strange in the prequels. Liam and Ewan are pretty good actors... do people think they just forgot how to act during Star Wars? That's how Lucas wants the Jedi to come off. That kid Anakin was definitely bad at acting, though.
  • If anyone needs advice on how to watch the De-specialized versions via a blu ray player PM me. I have helped/hooked up a few members on here and they were very happy to watch them that way. They truly have amazing video and sound quality.

Natalie Portman already had at least one Academy Award by that time.

  • I would like to add to my previous comment:

    Star Wars (Despecialized Edition)

The Empire Strikes Back (Despecialized Edition)

Return of the Jedi (Despecialized Edition)

I thought at least one of the Ewok movies was "so bad it's good", though, at least as a kid.

    Wilford Brimly makes it.

I remember there was an animated ewok movie my siblings and I watched as kids in the 90s that we rented all the time. Can't remember the name of it, but we thought it was awesome.

  • I'd say watch em in numerical order. Go from worst to best!

Pretty sure I'm thinking of "Battle for Endor". (could have been "Caravan of Courage", though -- don't remember which is which)

    It was live action.

Some family crashes their little ship on Endor and the parents are captured some some kind of giant.

The kids meet up with Wilford Brimly and his wierd little white Snarf-like pet.

    It's Rogue One, not rouge.

    Rouge is red makeup.

    Rogue means rebel.

Sorry. It just bothers me when people use malapropisms in their spelling or speech without seeming to know they're doing it. I'm a teacher--my students do it all the time--so it's kind of a gut reaction. (Worst offender, as I teach history, is cavalry and Calvary. I always have to tell my students, cavalry is mounted soldiers, and Calvary is where Jesus died. The army did not have 3,000 places where Jesus died charge the enemy.)

Anyway, again, I apologize for my little side rant.

Carry on. (And feel free to ignore me. Just wanted to get this off my chest.)

hahaha, that reminds me of the honest trailer!!

So fucking what? It is a fictional story, the important order is when they are told, not when they take place in their fictional time. They were intended to be watched in order of release, how could it be otherwise?

Not that you can't watch those produced so far in whatever order you want. But the whole idea of labeling them in chronological order by the time of the fiction always seem very silly to me. The first film produced in the series is the first episode, cause it is the first piece of narrative in the whole series.

One of Lucas' original inspirations for Star Wars was the old Flash Gordon adventure serials. Lucas wanted to give the audience a sense that they were being swept up into the middle of a larger story. This is one reason why A New Hope begins where it does, with the plans already stolen and the Princess' ship under attack (a narrative trope called in medias res). Although the first film did not originally have a subtitle or episode number (being simply titled Star Wars), when Empire Strikes Back was in development, Lucas decided to label them "episodically" and retroactively add the subtitle to the first film, to further enhance the feeling of the series as part of a grander saga. As far as I can tell, it was never intended to be a reference to the notion that he would later return to write the earlier episodes. It was simply to imply the epic span of his space adventure.
  • I typically suggest watching in order of release, if only so you're not spoiled on (or turned off by) the CG in the prequels, and the complete lack of such in the original trilogy.

I would think the opposite if you are going to watch the prequels at all to watch them first so you don't notice how bad the CG is compared to actual people / stunts / physical models

I also just saw Karate Kid for the first time Sunday night, so I can now appreciate the avatar!

Oh wow.....you just watched Karate Kid and you haven't watched all the star wars?! sorry I just need a sec to gather myself....

Ok, ready. The different orders there were just someone's version of the sequence to watch it. If you ask George Lucas he says start with episode 1 but that's terrible in my opinion as the biggest reveal in Star Wars history isn't a reveal anymore and you'd be like duh. The order it came out would be 4,5,6 then 1,2,3,7 and so on, which I think is what most do.

Karate Kid is amazing, one of the first live action movies I remember watching and I wanted to be the Karate Kid from then on. That score and soundtrack!!!! "you're the best around" "it's a cool, cool cool summer", watch part 2 and 3 now!! do not watch "the new karate kid" with the chick or the reboot with Jaden smith, they dishonour the originals and Miagi-do.

    Star Wars: Droids

  • There was animated Ewok stuff as well. I believe I've got all the Ewok stuff somewhere at home.
  • IV, V, VI, I, II, III, VII, (VIII), Rogue One

So basically the order they came out in. I don't think the prequels should be watched first unless you've seen all the movies already.
  • Speaking of the Droids cartoon, does anyone remember this guy? Wanna guess his name? It's Kybo Ren (sometimes Kybo Ren-cha). Sound a little familiar, doesn't it? You're welcome.

  • I don't like episodes 123 but if I was showing star wars to someone for the first time Id go chronological

    1 2 3 , rogue1, 4 5 6, 7.
  • 4 5 and 6 in that order, 1 - 3 are trash, 7 is meh.

If you took someone who was completely "in the dark" about Star Wars and show them the films in that order, it actually ruins several of the most important plot twists of Episodes IV, V and VI. Particularly concerning Darth Vader, Luke and Leia, Yoda, Obi-Wan and even some minor spoilers about the Emperor. It would cheat the viewer out of some of the most significant and memorable moments of Star Wars itself.

That's exactly the kind of confusion that these episode numbers cause. The 'natural' narrative order is the order of release, calling the original trilogy episodes IV, V, and VI doesn't provide anything interesting to it. We know what is the fictional chronology of events, we don't need the number tagged on the episodes like that to clarify the chronology of the story.

The thing is, the title of a movie (or sub-title, etc.) is not part of the fictional world of the story. The title of a narrative (be it a novel, a movie, a play, etc.) is something that is exterior to the story told, that belongs to 'our world'. The characters of Star Wars aren't aware that they are living the episode VI of their saga and that this episode is called The Return of the Jedi. In the same kind of thinking, episodes VI-V-VI aren't dependant of episodes I-II-III, it is the contrary, cause the latter have been written and directed in accordance to the original trilogy. The fictional chronology is an illusion, while the narrative chronology is the key component of the time in a story (even when a story is chronologically linear).
  • Best order = 4 5 6 7
  • In the order they were released.
  • IV, V, VI

Never was a big fan of the rest. The prequels were kinda meh, and the new one felt like a rehash of IV

    *escapes torches and pitchforks*
