The elusive Hi-Score

Part of the charm in retro games are the simplistic graphics and play mechanics. Another main part would be the aspect of achieving high scores in each new gaming attempt. The best games not only hook you into their charm, but they make you play the games over and over again. Whether you're trying to reach the next level, whether you've completed the game for the umpteenth time, you just want to keep playing to reach that new Hi Score!

Forget to do your homework? Who cares, Hi scores are more important! Forget to go to sleep before midnight? Hi scores are more important than minor issues such as insomnia and brain dysfunction! Forget to eat and drink in between game time? Who cares if your life is at stake, when that Hi score is begging for you to reach, damnit!

2 main questions:

1. What are your favourite Hi Scoring games?

2. Have you ever achieved any top ranks in the Hi Score department for any particular game(s)?

  • Contra is an easy one, since you can just keep going after you beat it each time. Also some Atari games like pitfall and missile command, I used to be very very good at. However, I haven't come close to breaking records or anything.
  • I do have issues with insomnia sometimes, and I find playing a few rounds of Tetris helps a ton. Also really like balloon fight and dk jr. And a lot of Atari games
  • Galaga by a longshot, favorite arcade game, hope to get a cabinet some day, and my go to game if I want to break one of my high scores.
  • Not retro but "The Club" has an addicting scoring system that keeps me coming back to smash records.
  • Not quite retro, but in the last 1 year, I've been playing Defense Grid on Xbox 360 a fair amount. One of the levels I got extremely good on, ranking 10th amongst the global Hi Scores.

Tetrist and Galaga were also 2 past Hi Score game favorites of mine. In the modern era, I'm quite proud of achieving all the stars in both Mario Galaxy 1 and 2.
  • If you wanna talk modern (well, modernish) geometry wars is fantastic

Really??? I get Tetris effect if I play too much Tetris close to bedtime. That's just about the last game I would pick to help insomnia hahaha

  • My favorite game to get a high score is gyruss, doesn't matter if it's the NES version or the arcade cabinet.

haha fair enough. For me I can't sleep because I have too much shit on my mind. Focusing on these stupid blocks falling down the screen helps me clear my mind I think. I don't play particularly well those times though
  • Atari baby. For me, it's been Galaxian, Stampede, and River Raid. Oh... And Freeway. But Freeway made me cause damage to my Atari.   Also, I've got Galaga on 7800. It's lots of fun. Better than the NES version. I was also addicted to NES Donkey Kong for a while even though prior to that binging session (over weeks) I had hated the game.
  • I got to a point with Paperboy where I finished the game with the same score every time I beat it. Don't remember the number, but I'm not sure if it's possible to get any higher.
  • God bless you, sir. I don't have the patience for that shit.
