I know I'm a terrible doom and stoner fan

I've always enjoyed individual Black Sabbath songs. Me being 30 and my brother 7 years older than me. He was always more in the times than I would have been so he introduced me. I had a passing love of Black Sabbath over the years. And once getting into doom and stoner metal I could hear how much they meant to the genres and how they created them. I had never, in my knowable years, listened to a full Black Sabbath album. I decided to on a whim tonight... Listening to Paranoid. Holy shit... basically every drum pattern or riff I've ever heard is on this album in some form. I always thought Black Sabbath probably should be my favorite band but always passed in favor of newer more extreme bands. But. God. Damn.

  • Gotta give props to the pioneers man. Same with Led Zeppelin.
  • I was actually saying to my wife why does anyone give a shit about Led Zeppelin after Black Sabbath.
  • Black Sabbath are way better than Zeppelin. Zeppelin stole a bunch of riffs, piss on them.

Sabbath had some awesome stuff, you gotta listen to the full albums for the lesser known stuff, it'll blow your mind.
  • Do you think their albums without Ozzy or Dio are worth listening to? Honestly haven't heard anything without those guys.
  • Listening to Sabbath without Ozzy is like Iron Maiden without Bruce. Not the same thang.

Dio is a better singer, though. But yeah... I get what you mean. I've heard a few Maiden songs without Bruce that are cool, but you wonder what may have been. Shit I need to listen to Sabbaths 13. God is Dead or whatever was fucking awesome.
  • Also, how the fuck are they more competent doom writers 50 years later? These guys are luck of the draw. No reason they should have worked so well.

Edit: I don't mean that negatively... just how the fuck did they do it?

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS.

Paranoid is like their biggest commercial/mainstream album, still amazing album, but do some digging. The lesser known shit will fucking, no exaggeration - Blow. Your. Mind.
  • And if you like dio, listen to some rainbow, too. It's the tits.
  • Ha, I will dig deeper... But coincidentally, this thread has reminded me how amazing Iron Maiden is. A conversation I had with my wife a while ago (knowing I liked doom and black metal) she was surprised I told her that Iron Maiden was amazing and I loved them.
  • For some context, we were at a thrift store and I had a stack of Maiden cds in my hand. I said I didn't want to spend money but should I buy these. She said 'I thought you hated Iron Maiden, I've never heard you listen to them' and I said 'No, i love them. I just don't have my cds up here' (I moved across the country).
  • Ive never heard you mention Maiden
  • sabbath is freaking awesome (with ozzy). Do yourself a favor and watch the BBC episode with the hour long concert from when they were starting out. I'll see if I can find and post it

You are comparing apples to oranges though lol One is a metal band and the other a folk/hard rock band. That is like comparing Pantera to pink floyd.

As for plaigarism, yeah there were some issues over the years. But all of my favorite songs by them are not the songs questioned for plaigarism. In fact the ones they did plaigarize i usually can't even listen to because i dislike them so much. Maybe that is why lol
  • 1970 Paris.   The first five minutes is warm up and clowning around but once they start playing it's lights out

ugh.. you know me more than most here and that hurts. Not that I'm a fake, but more that I haven't been straight forward about influences and what I love and I guess I legitimately never mention Maiden. As per my conversation with my wife... Powerslave is one of my favorite metal albums... And that album is why I conceded with Cghost(which you know) that album is one of the most metal albums ever.

Edit: I know this is a late edit... But I always make stupid jokes to my wife about minutes to midnight and I have to explain the scientific reason and then that I love the song 2 Minutes to Midnight by Iron Maiden.

    They are both great !

Because they are in two totally different genres of music lol

Imagine if we had Black Sabbath with Ozzy all this time throughout the years??? That is tough though because then we wouldn't have any of his solo stuff, and that means no Crazy Train, Bark at the moon, and the many other awesome songs he has.

Honestly, I'd concur with your metal to folk/rock band comparison. Never understood why Zeppelin was considered metal but elders always say that was metal to them. Despite the difference in bands like Sabbath

Yeah same here, every time i see someone say they are metal it confuses the shit out of me. Usually older people like you said.

I mean dyer maker sounds so metal right? Misty mountain hop, heavy as fuck right? lol

I think it is because the genre evolved so much over the years and heavy metal became something VERY different than some of the bands they classified as heavy metal back in the day.

Even then though, i don't see how they classifed Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath in the same genre as Zep back in the day.
  • Okay, you guys have now forced me to waste the next hour listening to Sabbath/Maiden/Priest and all that represents the pinnacle of metal. Been a while since I really let myself swim in it.

Oh yeah, forget imagining Ozzy with Sabbath all this time; they had a number of years to explore that at least.    What would have been awesome would have been more years with Rhoads; those guys were awesome together.   Here's one more favourite YouTube video, this time solo stuff with Rhoads with great guitar

  • Well, they did have some metal ass songs.   but general, zeppelin isn't metal to me.

Edit: Come on... Priest was metal as fuck. No reason to bring them in.

That live Randy Rhoads album was a big pinnacle of my childhood. I listened to it constantly playing SNES. Specifically F-Zero.

You have to put yourself in a world where beach boys and incense and peppermints  and happy together and stuff like that have been popular on the radio.    All of these bands were a much heavier sound than what people had been used to.   I agree that Zep has a folksier bent but they were relatively similar sounds coming from roughly the same place at the same time in the same way that Nirvana and Pearl Jam sound nothing alike but are both considered grunge because they were part of the same movement coming out of the same town

Rhoads was a genius. His classical approach to the genre literally blew my balls off when i first heard him. Zakk Wylde can't hold a candle to him IMO BUT they are also very different style players.

It is a real shame he died in a stupid plane accident.

Maybe i was ambiguous. I am saying priest ARE metal, same with Maiden and Sabbath.

Me too; I've listened to it more than any other album.   Countless, countless times    I'd have it on while I did homework or whatever from about grade 7 onward

Honestly, I totally get that. When I talk to guys 20+ years older than me they say the same stuff. And it's all about when they grew up and how they experienced it. My difference of opinion is always granted to hindsight. And I totally get that. I grew up with grindcore, then hearing Iron Maiden which was one of the best metal bands ever thinking 'what is this pussy shit?'. Time frame and hindsight entirely matters and I get it.

I'm only teasing you.  Anyone who is openly a Slipknot fan isn't worried about being true or kvlt, or any of that BS.  Not that LoL isn't both.

...I say that as someone who owns Whitechapel and As I Lay Dying shirts.  Becuase I don't care either.
