I know I'm a terrible doom and stoner fan

  • I own Whitechapel and As I Lay Dying albums. Worst part of that is As I Lay Dying lying about their convictions with the band not being Christian and the vocalist trying to have his wife murdered. Ugh... at least Zao said none of the current members believe in a God and they were just making music.

Edit: And I'm absolutely certain no one here knows LoL is my band Lance of Longinus.
  • Now listen to the whole Sabotage album.

    P.S. UP THE IRONS!
  • Ahh yeah... Been listening to Sabbeth for many, many years from Ozzy through the Dio years, after that it went to shit. Used to be big into doom, death, black metal but I've went back to the 60s 70s rock (or whatever ya kids call it) where I liked it best.
  • Yeah I'm in the same boat... modern metal, in fairness what little I've listened to, seems to get caught up in this trap of trying to have the volume at 11 and the tempo at 100 beats per minute all the time and it just doesn't (imo) work. Changes in volume and tempo are like 50% of what makes music interesting to listen to.
  • There is a lot of zeppelin bashing in this thread. How dare you disrespect the gods of rock? Zeppelin is over the hills and far away (see what I did there?) above any other band in the same genre. Sure they plagarized, mostly from old 1930s folk music in terms of lyrics and a similar riff in stairway to heaven to that of another crappy song from a different group in the 60s. The stuff zeppelin stole they made 10 times better. The plagarism is blown out of proportion. Zeppelin laid the groundwork for the bands to come for better or for worse.

Opeth, Graveyard, Ghost, Mastodon, Red Fang, Agalloch, Deafhaven, might be the sort of stuff you're looking for

All the doom stuff is slow by nature too.

Loxx what do you think about Swallow the Sun?

  • I've tried several times to get into Swallow the Sun but they just don't do it for me. No real reason I can give, their music just doesn't click with me.
  • And in response to Bronty, I'm definitely in that camp of having everything over driven moving at a snail's pace and just a wall of sound that is suffocating. It just really gets me going. I know this isn't for everyone... well, really, it's not for many people at all but this is an example of my favorite band and the stuff I like when it comes to modern metal.

Too much melody or too fast?

Eternal Idol is almost listenable; if you don't want to dig I'd recommend "Glory Ride" and "Odin's Court / Valhalla" as the best examples of Tony Martin's involvement.

  • "If you come up with a great metal riff, you'll realize Black Sabbath already wrote it in some form" -Scott Ian.

Vah Halen is kinda the same. Their radio hits are good, but most of my favourite songs are 'b-side tracks'

Led Zeppelin are gods of rock. No doubt about it.  No way I would ever clasify them as metal though.

I remember sleeping outside on the sidewalk to get Black Sabbath tickets when they first reunited (must of been around 1998 I think).  What a show.

And everyone copies other artists in some way, shape, or form.  If you wanna get technical all of the bands mentioned hear ripped from the Beatles.  Yeah I said it.  Helter Skelter anyone?

Check out the article I linked earlier, it gets into that and it's a decent read

Really, I have no issue with their music. I listen to black metal and blackened doom so faster pace is no issue. And I love Opeth, and more specifically their later stuff. Plus, being a mark for 'blackgaze' I love melody in my music. There is just something I can't explain about Swallow the Sun. Their music doesn't strike a chord with me and I get very bored. Blugeoner/Hollow Viscus (IGN and my board) has tried to get me to like them for years. I honestly can't say why I don't like them.
  • Did anyone check out that Hell song I posted on the previous page?

Edit: I'm even wearing the shirt for that album! Of course the picture is sideways...

How do you feel about Deep Purple?  They had a lot of cross-pollination between memebers.  Born Again with Ian Gillan and Seventh Star with Glenn Hughes might be worth checking out then.

  • I honestly haven't listened to much Deep Purple, either. I watched James Rolfe's video the other day about his Black Sabbath playlist that links all the other associated bands. That was pretty interesting.

Skip Deep Purple and go straight to Rainbow.

Ha, I will dig deeper... But coincidentally, this thread has reminded me how amazing Iron Maiden is. A conversation I had with my wife a while ago (knowing I liked doom and black metal) she was surprised I told her that Iron Maiden was amazing and I loved them.

I saw this thread and was going to post about Maiden. Unbelievably talented group. My opinion is Maiden is head and shoulders above any other non-standard rock band.

I went to a concert back in the 2002 timeframe that was:

    1st Act:
  • Like others have mentioned, their b side tracks or non radio songs blow the piss out of the commercial stuff (What a surprise).
  • If you haven't already, listen to Ozzy Osbourne Randy Rhoads Tribute

Best live album of all time
  • Yep, I mentioned listening to that all the time as a kid while playing F-Zero. Haven't heard it in a while, though.

Best live album of all time

Pft that is for radiotards I could name 10 better live albums that make that look like ass.

I mean, if you just like listening to 4/4 time 4 1/2 minute long cookie cutter tunes, sure.

Oh no intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, guitar solo, chorus, outro......Every song is the same.

I almost fell asleep thinking about it.
