CIB or loose carts?

What do you prefer and why? I have no desire to collect CIB games. Even if I had the money I wouldn't collect them. They just don't do anything for me. Also, something sit right when it comes to buying boxes and manuals separately. If I was going for CIB stuff I'd want the set that came together originally including the dust sleeves. I do like manuals but rarely seek them out.

I'm right there with ya buddy! I have no desire to look at a boxed in nintendo game I should be playing on my system. But it is good to have manuals and Nes brand dust covers for your loose items. Just my opinion.....
  • I've switched to mainly buying CIB, as OP suggests, where all components must be there at once. For me, the N64's loose carts don't display too well, and I like the thrill of the hunt. It's the system that I have nostalgia for, so I can see how others may not agree with me.
  • I am primarily CIB. It's a sick and twisted habit that costs me more money than I really need to be spending. But I only collect games that I will play or that I have nostalgia as a kid so there's not many more I want. I'm almost at the end of what I want for NES and SNES.
  • Loose for me, If I cant play and enjoy them then I won't collect them.
  • I collect CIB.

To me, the packaging is just as much a part of the history as the ROM housed in the cart. I can play on an emulator if I just wanted the ROM. I like looking at the artwork, typography, and color choices. Sometimes it even inspires me in my own work

This for me, too. I was going for cart only, but it felt kinda hollow. Like... If all I care about is playing the game, I may as well just use an Everdrive or whatever.
  • Mostly cart only, but I do collect boxes when I can.
  • I started collecting only loose with the occasional manual but after 2-3 years, I reached the point where my shelf space was maxed out. My N64 set and my select SNES carts are in UGCs w/NTSC covers and most game discs are CIB so I decided NES is going to have to be complete to stay on the shelf.

yeah, if anything I felt like it was more a waste of money buying cart only
  • I'm a cart only guy and will pick up manuals I need if I see them for a good deal. I enjoy putting the better or higher valued games in UGCs and printing artwork, that to me is a lot of the fun. For lesser valued games I buy individual plastic cart protectors and stack them on my shelf that way like clear blocks with games inside lol.
  • i like CIB but my wallet and space in my house doesn't so i usually settle for loose. i only get CIB for certain games i like but hey if i had the money and space CIB would be preferred.
  • CIB 100% if I could but I have cart only of games I like to play but don't mean much to me and are more than a few dollars. Love the art work, nostalgic, and they display way nicer, especially 64 and handheld stuff.
  • Loose. I don't have any attachment to boxes, and don't want to spend extra. More for the CIB guys.
  • 99% CIB except for arcade boards. The other 1% I am hunting down the box or manual as we speak so I can get to 100%. I just prefer CIB, no specific reason other than they look good. Hell.......... I don't play the games as I don't have the time. They just sit there for me too look at.

    I expect reciprocity.

  • Just recently stepped through the looking glass into the madness that is CIB collecting.

For sure. It's just not my history. I don't know what I did with the boxes to my old games. Probably got thrown out after a handful of years. The artwork and stuff is cool, but I get that from arcade flyers and stuff like that hanging on my walls.

How? It saves the collector money in the long run, and if you prefer it then why not? It really boils down to how much CIB/loose carts relatively increase/decrease in value. I imagine it's pretty even but that's just a guess.

  • I collect everything except the box. The box is garbage to me.. It's kindof annoying actually because they can be tough to get rid of without the contents   You don't want to just throw them out, but shipping them is brutal and no one wants to buy just the box unless it's super nice condition so I basically end up with a pile of garbage condition boxes...

I will buy CIB games if it's for a game that's harder to find, I get a good deal and if the cart is NM, but I plan on selling all of the boxes that are worth anything. I sold my River City Ransom yesterday less than an hour after posting it. It was good but definitely had some ware and there was no manual.

I was mostly kidding. But to me there isn't any value (not talking monetary) in purchasing a cart only game, I can easily play it through other means. I feel like I'm getting my money's worth purchasing the complete package. Not to mention how easy it is to fall in a trap of buying a bunch of shelf filler because it's cheap, that shit adds up. Spending more on an individual game gives it more meaning to me and makes me more apprehensive of what I do buy.

I get that. I really just boils down to preference.

I couldn't agree more, personally speaking. The history element of cib/complete is very important and makes the collecting experience so much more fun and fulfilling for me. Artwork is huge too. For me, the packaging artwork is really a thrill to look at and appreciate.

of course   everyone likes what they like
  • I try to collect 100% complete SNES games. For me it's fun hunting down and then finding hard to find boxes/manuals/posters/etc. I also previously collected rare books where 90% of the value is in the dust jackets so collecting cart only felt really odd. I realize collecting this way means the chances of me ever being able complete the set are slim to none, but I guess that means I'll always have something to work towards.
