For as long as I've signed up, I loved this place. So much so that it's been one of my favorite places to chat. I've made many friends here, and even helped with some cool game-making, which is neat.
The people who bash this site, are mostly these types of people: Ones who aren't in it for the hobby or don't even care, ones who are too envious and complain, and others who are just asshats to begin with. I've seen people come in guns-a-blazing acting out with no respect, get banned for doing so, then go whine on another forum or group that this place sucks.
I look at it like this: It's like a house. We're all guests here. Like with any home you're invited to, it's always best to be courteous, respectful and on your best behavior. You don't have to agree with what people may say or think, but you don't have to come in all drunk, kicking dirt on the carpet, pissing on the walls, all the while being a brat if you don't get your way.
Is there things here I don't agree with? Sure. Do I think this place is perfect? Not really. But I do respect it full-heartedly. Just like a guest at any house.
It didn't (edit - answering the OP question - and the responses are right - who cares what's said in the halls? we're not here to bash each other, we're here because we love NES!)

So THATS how a key works! man I've been wondering.
The most vocal people are generally banned members who still wish they were allowed here. Some of them even make alt accounts that we have to keep banning, yet publicly say they hate this place with a passion.
The other thing is just that spewing hate seems to be what's in these days. NES / SNES diehards hate on N64. Gamers hate on collectors. Loose guys hate on Sealed. Forums hate on Youtube, Youtube hates on forums. Etc. Those who continually spew hate typically don't have enough positive influences in their life, and that is the true shame.

It's just a stereotype, the whole site gets painted with this same brush.
Nowhere is perfect, but we've got a pretty great place here most of the time.
This is a big part of the problem. Some people talk about NA like we have a unified front of specific opinions on every topic. Yes, there are certain areas where most people agree or disagree on something, but we don't have membership cards, where in order to be a member or continue to be a member of NA, you believe in this or that, fullset versus non, loose vs CIB, etc etc etc. We have a variety of different people here with a variety of different interests. We have members who are still in high school up to people at retirement age. We have people who collect thousands of games, and people who mainly just want to play and have little to no collection.
I won't go on and on with example after example, but it boils down to the concept that we lots of different people here with many different viewpoints.
Also, one thing that I find very disappointing is that people only seem to point out or remember the negative. For example, we could have 100 threads in a period of a week. Let's say 99 of those are normal and nothing extraordinary. If just 1 of those is negative, or certain comments are made, somehow people extrapolate that and say "NA is xxxx" or "NA members are yyyyy," when they glossed over the other 99 threads where everything was fine and people made lots of interesting and/or positive contributions.
I can't control what has happened in the past, or even what happens on a daily basis. And I certainly can't control what other people think of us. But what I AM trying to be very cognizant of, and what I am really trying to work on, is making sure that we as a community do try to treat people with respect and not endorse or encourage overly arrogant or overly negative behavior. I can't stand the hate and judgment that jone referred to in his post, and I'm going to do everything I can to try to discourage that as we move forward.
Some people probably don't like NA for valid reasons. I don't think it's all 100% about jealousy or complete idiocy. But my goal is to ignore the criticisms that are ridiculous, and if people have actually valid concerns, to try to address those as they arise.

Sounds interesting. I guess the next question is how does actual lockpicking work
The only thing that stands out to me is how abrasive sometimes we can be on newer members. I know we get tired of seeing the same stuff over and over again, but that isn't the fault of new members. If a post annoys you, or you've seen it a million times, just ignore it. Why be mean to the person or make them feel bad? Just might scare them away and make them think we are bullies, and then they go run to other forums to generalize all of us.
And as far as saying it is just playful joking, you gotta remember that unfortunately when you are new to a group of people, playful joking can seem like you are being a jerk. Especially when it is multiple members piling on.
Exactly 100% this. I know when I first joined, while there were some actual arguments going on, a lot of what I was seeing as abrasiveness was classified as "playful" by longtime members, and I just couldn't see it. I kept coming back because of a distinct lack of other options to daily read about NES stuff and reasonably interact with other members (no serious arguing, everything not being a pissing/popularity contest, etc.) and eventually got used to the vibe but still see and experience some of that abrasiveness to this day.
The mod squad has changed a good bit since I first signed on, and, with no disrespect intended to older/existing mods/admins, I think that's done wonders for the site. I've seen several mods step down and a lot of new ones get added, but honestly there weren't nearly as many active mods when I first started visiting. I think there may have legitimately been some rough edges at that point and having a less active and/or less numerous mod team (people can't be everywhere all the time, can't see everything) may have contributed to some of the hard feelings that people express elsewhere about NA. However, I hung in there (ignoring or outright avoiding whatever got on my nerves) and have seen things almost completely turn around (I say almost due to there still being the occasional unnecessary piling on when somebody asks a "dumb" question legitimately, sometimes even by mods).
Based on the "rough patch" that I experienced when I first signed on (whether it was a true rough patch or just my interpretation due to not being familiar with a lot of the in jokes and "humor" at the time), I would say that to a certain extent some of the virtriol is earned. Maybe not intentionally, but a lot of the gags, in jokes, and general humor takes a while to process and if folks aren't able or willing to ride it out until they "get" it, who are we to say they're wrong when they say they had a bad time? This is a great place, but it's definitely not the easiest to walk into and stick around and I can't fault folks who can't immediately see the value in the community when "rejection" by that same community is more common than it should be.
As for the "looking down at people" comment several posts back, there are still quite a few posts/threads that essentially say "This isn't cheap, if you can't afford it go away" (usually "toned" in a "f**k off" kind of way). The perpetually defended NA "theme" of "people can do whatever they want with their money" seems to directly contradict this, but people still get judged and griped about if they complain about pricing, can't afford something, etc. Judgement of people who are deemed to be "unable to afford the hobby" look pretty harsh to an outside observer--there's definitely some disconnect between "let people do what they want" and "only do this if [we] deem that you can afford it." I know this disconnect still annoys me mightily and I'd say it gets to others as well, so while I'd say it's definitely unintentional, the "snooty" stigma (at least in regard to this particular common example) is earned. Not by everybody, but I've seen regular users as well as mods regularly jump in on these, so folks shouldn't be left scratching their heads as to how folks outside the community (or who quickly left) could feel this way.
With all that said, I'm not slamming NA, I still love coming here daily, but have to point out that everything isn't as wonderful and sunny as a lot of folks see it. The bad elements don't always roll off of folks' backs as they often do with our more seasoned and veteran members, so we should make sure that we're always able to see those issues as and before they arrive versus telling folks who've been affected by them that they don't exist, aren't justified in how they feel, etc. That just alienates folks even more and does a disservice to the generally accepting reputation of our community. (/soapbox)
I just completely ignore negativity for the most part and don't feed into it, if someone doesn't like NA, cool...This place fucking rocks and I have made a lot of good friends here on and off the forum.
I have been on lots of forums before and have never been able to "connect" like I have here.

Look at the little seams on each of the tumblers, that once they all line up it lets the cylinder turn.
There are at least a few different methods for doing that, and there are all sorts of actual lock-cylinder mechanisms that actually orient the tumblers in different ways to make them harder to defeat.
Judgement of people who are deemed to be "unable to afford the hobby" look pretty harsh to an outside observer--there's definitely some disconnect between "let people do what they want" and "only do this if [we] deem that you can afford it." You know... all this talk about being snooty and looking down on those that can't afford it reminds me of something that happened in a particular thread. I'm pretty lax about most things and am in the camp of 'spend money how you want to' and that extends to go buy that repro if you don't want to pay $1000 for a cart. I know that is a super controversial opinion around here, which is why I avoid such topics. So yeah, I don't care if people can't afford gems.
Anyway, so this person makes a thread saying they went to the thrift store. They bought some things and they saw some peripheral in box (for NES I think... don't remember what it was). They considered buying it but decided against it because it was $10 and they either didn't even have $10 or didn't want to spend their last $10. I made the comment that hey, if you've only got $10 and you're out trying to buy video games maybe you shouldn't collect. Not as a snooty, if you can't afford it GTFO but as if you only have $10 you need to be spending that money elsewhere. That's just concern about someone's well being. No one needs to get to that place. But then I got jumped on saying people like me and my comment are the reason why people hate NA. It annoyed the shit out of me. But again, I'm not trying to be hostile with people so I ignored it. And there IS a difference between if you can't pay your bills and you're potentially broke please don't collect for your own good opposed to fuck off you poor peasant.

I think this was a great point to bring up. I know that sometimes new members don't want to post as they are scared of this occuring to them and will just PM me (or others) with questions. I hope since these points have been said, that maybe we'll see some good vibes come back to the site about welcoming new people and understanding that everyone has different levels of knowledge about this hobby of ours and even though we may collectively be experts, people still need help with simple things and basic questions. Just point them in the right direction with a smiling heart people. This world is dark enough

EDIT: Also, prove me wrong that all that crap doesn't boil down to jealousy at some level. Who gives a shit what other people do with their money?
If all you've ever collected are Nintendo games, then I have a story for you.
A long time ago (late 90s/early 2000s), the TurboGrafx-16 and Neo Geo were fun to collect and play because they weren't expensive. Not quite as cheap as old Nintendo/Sega games at the time, but still cheap.
By the time the 2010s arrived, collectors had driven prices for TG16/NG games so high that not only were they no longer in gamer territory, but they had attracted eBay flippers and counterfeit producers (NG specifically). Thus began a perpetual cycle of price hikes. Bootleggers had to use cheaper NG games to make fakes, decreasing the quantity of cheaper titles and increasing the value of original games that could be proven as real, coveted as such by collectors.
The same thing is happening to Nintendo games. Don't encourage price hikes as a collector, preserve our favorite hobby.
And before the anti-gamer comments, don't forget that video games can be played. That's their most satisfying purpose.

Neo Geo pretty much summed up in a couple of sentences

That definitely hit NeoGeo earlier than TG; I recall still getting deals on Turbo stuff well into 2011. But I feel for anybody trying to get into that now, yikes.
I like how you ignore the part where collectors started the insane price hikes that sucked all the fun out of the hobby and eventually attracted predators like flippers and bootleggers, thus hurting themselves and any non-collectors in the hobby.
Of course, if you're not into Neo Geo, you probably don't know the full meaning of the words "flipping" and "bootlegging".
Gamers generally gravitate towards fun/popular titles, the only price hikes they're capable of are for good games. Even then, they're nothing compared to what collectors can pull off (Stadium Events anyone?).
Meh, just consider the source when you hear that stuff. A lot of it stems from butthurt that they don't have the awesome stuff some of the peeps here have.
Statements like this are why.
You're inside the bubble so of course you don't understand.
Oh, blow it out your ass already.
EDIT: Also, prove me wrong that all that crap doesn't boil down to jealousy at some level. Who gives a shit what other people do with their money?
You are inside the bubble of the collectard community mindset, which makes you unironically post things like this without the awareness of the actual facts or how such statments are viewed outside NA.
Proof: there are several communities that clown on NA with many members who in fact have full sets, CIB, etc, but have been in the hobby for decades, and think the modern collectard environment is cringeworthy, as well as its affect on the overall hobby is negative.
Or the fact that I don't give a fuck? Po-tay-to po-tah-to. I have the one full set I wanted, anything else is just gravy at this point.
And again, if you hate this place so much why are you here?
Is 7800 the only set you wanted to complete? I believe you told me Midnight Mutants was the game you got to complete that set. Actually got that one in the mail yesterday but haven't played yet. Sorry... I know, off topic of our hate thread, just curious.

I like how you ignore basic economics (and gynecology from other threads you've posted in lately).
And why wouldn't you avoid something that isn't fun any more? I see that mindset a lot more than I thought I would about people longing for the "good old days". NES is hot. So be on the fun side (selling) of it, or diversify? There are lots of different ways to adapt to change rather than the way you're going about it.
I was going to add "stinkin' Millennials" at the end, but I know several other people your age (well, physical age anyway) that don't act like you.
Judgement of people who are deemed to be "unable to afford the hobby" look pretty harsh to an outside observer--there's definitely some disconnect between "let people do what they want" and "only do this if [we] deem that you can afford it." Yep. Even when NES/SNES was way cheaper overall I figured that was the only set that really mattered to me as I had the most nostalgia for it. Plus it's a smaller set and there's only one game you might have to pay over $100 for.

This world is dark enough
bunch of whiny garbage babies.
Idk why, but I got reminded of this.
But I think there's drama like this in every community, just the natural way of things.
Also, that NWC wheel haha. I'll pm you
It didn't (edit - answering the OP question - and the responses are right - who cares what's said in the halls? we're not here to bash each other, we're here because we love NES!)
Play Metroid!
YOU play Metroid, I'm bitter.
I embrace Nintendoage and (most of) it's members to the fullest. This is the only forum I use, and I have used it constantly since I signed up.
I mention NA often on my buying/selling journeys and try to spread the word of this site like a Nintendoage Witness or something.
... I do think we chew up new members sometimes, though. Sometimes they deserve it, sometimes probably not.

These threads always go so well!

I like how you ignore the part where collectors started the insane price hikes that sucked all the fun out of the hobby and eventually attracted predators like flippers and bootleggers, thus hurting themselves and any non-collectors in the hobby.

Then again, the others are NeoGeo.com, Reddit, and the like, so maybe it's a matter of perspective.
Is 7800 the only set you wanted to complete? I believe you told me Midnight Mutants was the game you got to complete that set. Actually got that one in the mail yesterday but haven't played yet. Sorry... I know, off topic of our hate thread, just curious.
Yep. Even when NES/SNES was way cheaper overall I figured that was the only set that really mattered to me as I had the most nostalgia for it. Plus it's a smaller set and there's only one game you might have to pay over $100 for.
Now get back to hating me dammit!
