To anyone that believes that NA is a terrible place with terrible people I always say the same thing. Come say hello to us at a convention like MGC, I suspect your mind would be changed in a hurry once you see how friendly, genuine and generous the folks here are in real person.
Case in point, Captainwarmonger-Dave is one of The Nicest humans you will meet in any walk of life.

I totally agree even though i never met him. And he even banned me at one point. Goes out of his way all the time for fellow collectors.
Judgement of people who are deemed to be "unable to afford the hobby" look pretty harsh to an outside observer--there's definitely some disconnect between "let people do what they want" and "only do this if [we] deem that you can afford it." I know this disconnect still annoys me mightily and I'd say it gets to others as well, so while I'd say it's definitely unintentional, the "snooty" stigma (at least in regard to this particular common example) is earned.

That's the thread I was talking about in a previous post. And I wouldn't say I railed on him for not paying with a credit card... but I did state that maybe you shouldn't go out collecting if you can't afford $10 items you had interest in. Maybe I didn't say 'Hey, looks like maybe you can't really afford to be able to spend a lot of money so maybe hold off, get a little savings, and then go crazy' but it's also pretty offensive to imply someone is poor. Collect within your means, yeah... but if $10 is a make or break you situation... That's kinda iffy, man. If I can't only afford to spend $20 or else I'm in shit creek or I've only got $20 in general, I'd probably think 'Some things are more important.' I still think that is different from some of the posts that are 'You can't buy Little Samson? Tough shit, it's not for you'. Not saying I give a damn about those posts, either. I could afford it, I choose not to. So it doesn't bother me.
Also, not saying you were saying me specifically when you made that comment. Just giving my viewpoint of my comments made.
I'd have to see the thread and the context, but based off what you are saying and quoting you here. It definitely was kind of unnecessary even though you didn't mean it.
Why say what you said? Maybe he didn't have the money at that exact moment but really wanted it. Or maybe he only has $10 a month to collect. That doesn't mean someone shouldn't collect or give up. You can make this work with whatever budget, your options are just limited.
Showing him the door could definitely be taken the wrong way. Especially depending on hows it's worded. Just my take on it.
"They considered buying it but decided against it because it was $10 and they either didn't even have $10 or didn't want to spend their last $10. I made the comment that hey, if you've only got $10 and you're out trying to buy video games maybe you shouldn't collect"

Trust me, I get you. And my intent saying something like that isn't 'Get out of the hobby/this board'. Just like I said in another post up there, if your last scrap of money is going towards a video game maybe you should think about it. And of course, no one is super long winded in their posts (Aside from a few members) everytime we post so yes, things can be misinterpreted. We're only doing it in a thread like this to clearly define intent. Some people are malicious when they say things like I said, mine wasn't malicious in intent. Things can always be misconstrued. Certain people read things differently. When I said it in that thread, I wasn't meaning it negatively and it didn't read negatively in my head. Clearly other members did find it so.

But don't think of that as the fella only has $20; his collecting budget is $20. Gotta think way bigger picture; we have peeps of all ages and economic situations here.
I agree with both you and darkchlyde. While you meant well and your full explanation makes sense, from the snippet in that thread it comes off as more harsh than you intended.
Although it is scary that people will spend their last $20 on games/any non-necessity.
Wheres all the usual members that spend a ton of time here yet pile on about how much we suck to other game forums?
We see you
Yeah, where's Guntz and pegboy?
I'm buying you Lasik for Christmas mang.
As for pegboy, I don't see him as anti-NA. He just has some very (overly?) strong feelings on several collecting subjects and I personally think he's been doing a better job of being less blunt as we've asked.
And I've considered that since, capt. Again, like in my previous post, different people read things differently. If that's what he meant, I misinterpreted. I didn't stick around in the thread to see if he clarified as it quickly became hostile when that wasn't the intent.

That is why though some things are either
1) Better left unsaid
2) Worded in a way where you know you won't be misconstrued
If you are ambigious or vague, how is somoene supposed to know what you are trying to get accross? There isn't a limit to how much you can write, and clarifying would take an extra sentence, maybe two.
Like Darkchylde said above, you clarifying now doesn't help because the member might have already gotten discouraged or bummed out from what you said and left. Intent can be easily displayed by choosing your words more carefully.
P.S. I am not specifcally talking about you, just in general about how we choose to word things so peopel can understand our true intent. This is the web with just text, which can make things tough to gauge.
Im not always fond of this forum. Lots of dick measuring/bragging and IMO useless collecting things that they're not gonna use, but thats just me. But I say for the great deals, info on interesting NES things and the people that beat their games and talk strategy. But since its place encompasses all things Nintendo, I gotta take what I dont like with what I do like.
And I get you, I totally do. I also understand you and capt aren't attacking me. I'm the one that opened up this conversation. True, doesn't help that person if they were discouraged. If I remember correctly, I made my one statement (that clearly came off as negative) and then other people kind of piled on that taking it in the direction I didn't mean. So I removed myself from the discussion. Could I have clarified? Sure. But as you guys said, damage was already done.

Yes, let's get this back on track and attack me instead.
Or at least someone that's a dick, that's fine too.
You state a lot of the "goodwill toward man" items that you (and some others, but not all) see as requirements in life (padded savings account, emergency fund, etc.) as fact.
The necessity of a decent emergency fund (or funcitonal equivalent, via savings/investments/etc) IS a fact.

It's crazy. This seems to be one of the friendlier gaming communities I hang around.
Then again, the others are NeoGeo.com, Reddit, and the like, so maybe it's a matter of perspective.
yes, this is it. NA is the very worst community, except for all the others.

When will the NintendoAGE hate bubble burst?
That can only be decided by Alekx

You'd probably need an army of javelin tossers or enough arrows to "black out the sky" with exploding tips to pop this bubble lol
