How Much Real Work Do You Get Done in A Work Day?

So its been pretty slow at work. Drives me nuts when its slow..Trying to look busy or finding nonsense busy work to fill the time. In a normal day where there is actual work to be done i'm all about it! I get my shit done! But its days like this that really makes me want to seek out other options for work. I guess i shouldnt complain, i mean theres times when i literally get paid to sit here and play Switch or 3DS cuz there is just nothing to do. My work goes through ups and downs since a lot of our business is goverment contracts that don't always roll in.

Got me thinking though how much people slack off. Even when its busy here i catch people slackin and i'm guilty myself at times. So how much real work do you get done in a work day? To The Polls!!!

I'd say in a normal day when we're busy im in the 6-7 hour range. Don't do a lot of over time these days but i'm willing if there is work to be done!

  • Totally depends. Some days I'll put 8 hours in and tackle a few e-mails at home too. Other days I may get 4 hours of work or so in.
  • When i was at the hospital in the genetics lab, i worked an insane full 8-10 hours processing peoples tumors and getting them into the proper state for the doctors to analyze them. Both in the computer and in physical form via slides for a microscope. Basically your tumor is encased in a block of paraffin wax, and then you use a microtome to shave off tiny slices or "sections" of the tumor to be "stained" with chemicals and looked at with an electron microscope.

Then i got promoted to the directors assistant and i had like 2 hours a day doing his schedule and emails. It was torture but more money for less work. Biggest mistake.
  • I chose 8, because the 8+ option makes me feel bad.

I'm a really hard worker, in a field full of slackers.
  • I'm clocked in 8-10 hours a day. I'm technically doing work that entire time but part of my job is looking at data, pressing buttons, waiting for something to run, then collecting data again. There are lulls in me actively doing things but I'm technically doing my job the entire time.
  • About 15 minutes of actual work-
  • I'm currently pretty much the guy from office space but show up for the hours. I'll be hustling soon after years of actually working way too much when I was a Chef, a few years ago I changed careers and 98% of the time I try and only work about an hours or less a day. Bring on the hustle! Sometimes I literally just stare at the screen if I can't fuck around on NA. Quaze'll tell ya, it's been sweet, he usually plays binding of Isaac.
  • I have a private teaching job, so even tho I dont work nearly as much as most everyone else, when I do work its 100%.

I hear ya there. Im the back up tester in the test department so when the other guy is out i pop over there and its mind numbing! Some of the tests take like 20+ minutes and i gotta sit there and look for pass/fails and data, uhhgg. One of my least favorite things i do here. I like being more hands on. Most of the time im building cables or soldering circuit boards.

  • On the clock 12hrs a day and actual work i do comes in spurts as I work with the handicapped so it just boils down to really just hanging out and paid for it. It gets boring as hell sometimes with these hours and im on the ass end of a 22day stretch but I never thought I'd complain getting paid for punching shit into a computer and hand out meds and referee arguements. As I like staying busy but hell I have it made I am not gonna lie. Lol
  • Yeah, I am technically a technician in the repairs department of my company, but my specific station is mainly calibration. I do some hands on work. This morning I rebuilt 2 units for instance... but yeah, a lot of time it's washing, cleaning, testing, and math. Oh, and forms...
  • I sometimes stop and think about all the hours I have been paid for not working.....Then laugh my ass off.

Yeah, i sorta do a bit of everything. I've been here for almost 13 years now so i sorta know most everything we do or that needs to be done. My main title is just Manufacturing Assembler but i'm the assistant Test Tech, I'm back up in the stock room when she's gone, or if the shipping/receiving guy is gone i receive packages and enter them in the system, i do procedures/build guide and assemby drawings on pads for our circuit boards so i usually always have something to do but this year so far has been one the slowest i can remember. The engineers here have a ton of new products in the works so once some of those are finished we will pick up but definite lol these days!

  • If going to meetings count then I'm extremely productive. Too many damn meetings...
  • I could easily condense all of my daily work done within an hour.
  • If I'm answering this, apparently not enough! lol

I joined NA specifically because of how much downtime I have.

    Absolutely

"oh so you have a quick question slightly outside of the scope of the current meeting agenda? Let's take it offline, I'll throw something on your calendar"

    fuck.

  • Depends on the day. I work at a factory every day from 330-11 to pay the bills and do freelance design all morning (somedays more that others)

I don't consider the factory real work, its not advancing my career at all. The freelance stuff is the important part as I build my portfolio and work towards starting a real career.

So work in general 10-14 hours a day

REAL work 4-6 hours a day, sometimes more
  • 13 hours a day plus commute

Oh, they take that shit offline at your place?   Here they'll derail the fucking meeting for 45 minutes and then we still don't get the answers we need for the meeting topic.

As far as the OP's question, a lot of what I do involves testing that is hands off and just takes a while, hence my being on here.

  • I'm glad my meetings are limited aside from mandatory department meetings (10-15 minutes) and lunch meetings (one hour) every week. I did get out of an almost hour long meeting not long ago that just seemed so useless. We have meetings and training for the jobs we already do. Not recertification or anything like that, just 'We changed a line in the work instructions so now we're going to do 2 days of training 6 hours each to make sure you guys understand'. Thankfully, the last time we had one of those the person holding the training told me specifically I didn't have to go and they'd relay any information I may need.
  • 8 hrs, when you run a crew of 30 guys there is always something to do

Damn son, what do do? Kitchen?

  • I usually clock in for 6 hours during the week and 8-9 on weekends. An average work-week day I probably get 5 hours of actual work in, although in retail sometimes you pretty much have to stand around (cover for other people in case customers need help or something).

I instal/repair electro-mechanical signal equipment that prevents passenger trains from colliding. Their is a lot of shift work and train dodging, so its not very enjoyable. I drive 2 to 4 hours a day to get to work and home depending on where Im stationed. Its a long day.

  • I work 8hour days.

It takes me 20mins to drive to work 45mins to drive home. (Not included in 8hr day)

I get two 20minute breaks, and i spend 15 mins in the morning and 15 mins in the afternoon unpacking and cleaning up tools. So I guess I do 7hours of actual work?
  • Some days are busy and long, especially travel days. Other days (meetings aside) I could literally answer all e-mails from home within an hour. I've seen polls/stats before and it seems 4-6 hrs is usually about average.
  • I probably average 6 hours a day of what I call "work" which to me is balls out, trying to get stuff done work. The other 2 hours might be spent bs'ing with my boss or co-workers, sitting down in the clubhouse to drink a coke and watch college softball or baseball for half an hour, or just spending longer than necessary in the restroom watching Netflix. I was doing the same job at a previous employer but it was absolute panic all day everyday. Life is much easier at my current job but I do get bored considering what I was doing previously. And when I am working it's 2 or 3 levels below working in panic mode like before.

  • I will probably only do 30 minutes of work today, the rest will be listening to Zappa and doing various things on the internet.

Why you guys think my post count is so goddamn high? It's not my fault.
