Star Wars collector robbed by friend for $200K of items

http://www.ranchoobiwan.org/sadnews/

Sounds like the same kinda deal, trusted person has access and lifts stuff on the sly. Wonder how often this really happens to people with big time collections.

Comments

  • I was reading about that yesterday on Jedi Temple Archives. Those Star Wars collectors are no joke. I guess this guy might be looking at some real jail time.
  • God damn collectors buying up all the old toys, driving up the price.

Toys are meant to be played with! If only we could stop new people from wanting to buy toys, we could keep them at 5$ each.

    /satire

But seriously, that is crazy. Mad props to the guy who bought all the shit, contacting the original guy probably knowing that he's never going to see his money again. Right across the golden gate from me too!
  • Man that son of a bitch is ice coe!
  • Everytime I see a story like this I am shocked. I just don't understand how anyone can do this to a friend.

There have been times that Ive given away expensive things to my friends because I want their collections to be just as great as they do.

Why wouldn't you want the best for your friends?
  • These are the kinds of stories that make me content that I have no friends.

  • Didn't read the article, but I don't talk value with friends. I just say I have a nice collection. When they ask what is the most expensive item I own I play dumb.

In all honesty, my first friend I ever made from when I was 3-4 years old and we are still friends now is the only friend I could ever trust with absolutely anything....Other than that, nope.

Heh - we let my wife's cousin stay for free in a house and he ripped us off for a bunch of stuff we had stored in the place.

    No good deed goes unpunished.

By my experience, once someone steals, they eventually are able to justify to themselves that they can steal from anyone, friend or family. There are all sorts out there, but I think less of a thief than I do a murderer, probably because there's seven billion of us so we could use a little paring down population-wise.

  • The assholes in this world, man. I've got a very tight group of friends and none of them would ever screw me over, but it pisses me off to see people get their trust taken advantage of and betrayed.
  • yeah, it's best to be tight lipped about valuables because if that person you told becomes desperate for money, then there is a good chance they may try and get it. There was a big shoe collector and I believe he posted pictures on Facebook and a so called friend saw it and killed him and stole the collection.
  • This is why I sold most of my really expensive games... Huge liability and I was unsuccessful at getting a satisfactory answer from any insurers. Between maintenance people, friends of friends, etc., I didn't want to have that on my mind. I still have some expensive games, but unless someone literally stole my whole collection I wouldn't be taking any major hit with exception of a very few items. Although if obviously still be pissed. Money ruins people... It's sad
  • It sucks, and it shows that the bloke wasn't a true friend.

I don't have a lot of friends, especially not where I am living now; however, I will always take quality over quantity, any day. The friends I have would give the shirt of their backs for me, and vice versa, so this sort of crap would never happen.

People that take advantage of others an their kindness suck. That is why I prefer cats to people.
  • Likewise, the guy that had bought the stuff is a class act, seemingly the type of person I would want to include in my circle of friends.

You can recover from lost goods, families are destroyed by murderers. Unless you've experienced life with a family member who was murdered, you'd rather have someone steal a video game instead. Speaking from personal experience, with both.

That is horrible. Life is precious and I am sorry to hear you say that. I can't imagine living it. The closest I've seen to this was when suicide tore up a family that I was close with,

I'm sure hearing something like this he would take it back. Perhaps if he has no experience with murder it is easier for him to justify. We all harbor feelings against others at times. Some even go so far as to entertain the idea of murder in their heads. While few see the after affects of murder first hand everyone has had some experience with betrayal.

  • Keep your friends close but your collections closer

Thank you for the sentiment. I don't normally like bringing it up just because I don't like burdening people with things like this, but I thought some perspective would help. I wasn't offended or anything like that (I don't think it came off as that way), but saying that you think less of someone who steals tangible items over someone who steals the future and life of another person, there seems to be a lack of understanding on the ripple effects on the families.

  • Adam, I'm sorry to hear that. I think the other Adam said it well.
  • This talk reminds me of Brandver3.

For those who haven't been around as long as others, Brandon was the first to discover a NES California Raisins prototype. He had the ROM dumped for free despite offers to purchase the cart undumped for thousands of dollars. He was an all around good guy who helped out other collectors with generous trades and sales.

His roommate later killed him , burned his body to cover up the crime and stole his games and anything else of value they could find. There was a memorial site created after he died. Thinking about all of this these past few days and re-reading the heart wrenching posts his mother made on Digital Press I visited the memorial site again today. 12 years later people are still posting there and grieving. As a parent I just wouldn't know what to do if I had to endure something like this.

RIP Brandon, you deserved better than this.

I remember MrMark and Beagle telling me about this a few years back. Totally heartbreaking.
