UHF

Maybe I'm drunk right now but this movie is great. It has it all! Flying Poodles, a seal being threatened, table saw mishaps, an homage to Raiders of the Lost Ark and Conan, fun with dirt! and Twinkie weiner sandwiches. Anyone else a fan of Wierd Al?

I dunno... some small yappy dog.

YAPPIES DOG TREATS!  You're dog will love that liver and tuna taste... with just a hint of cheese.

*seething anger* Dooon't yoooou knoooow... da Dewey Decimal System?!
  • I grew up on this and still love the movie (recently upgraded to the blu-ray). I still quote it to this day, any opportunity for "What's in the box! Nothing, absolutely nothing! You so stupid!"

Plus working in tech has given me enough opportunities to work in. "You get to drink from the firehose!"

Really wish Weird Al had done some other movies around that time.
  • Dear everyone,

    Go watch this movie.

  • I love that movie! The Wheel of Fish scene gets quoted pretty often with some of my friends.
  • I actually bought the Bluray a few months ago finally. I remember this movie was pretty much on tv in the tech room at my art school in the 90s on a loop.
  • Yes. I watched this so much growing up
  • A classic.
  • I saw it on THIS network (KSLA 12.2) back several years ago after my fiance and I returned from an East Texas winery. My fiance was totally juiced but I only had a glass or two that night because I had to drive home (the Texas highways were crawling with cops on the lookout for DWI, all the way until I hit the Louisiana state line), but I was paking a bunch of wine bottles and proceeded to drink a whole bottle by myself after I got home, and my mom wasn't thrilled. We tuned into THIS on DTV over the air and I remember surprisingly a lot considering I was drunk. My fiance passed out sleep about 35 minutes into it but my mom and I stayed up and watched the whole thing and I recall my mom saying it was the most cornball movie she'd ever seen. I may pick it up if I see it on bargain DVD or BluRay, but IMO it's not worth over 6 bucks. Walmart and Best Buy selling lots of $6 BluRay classics now.

As for Wierd Al's music, I consider much of it extremely lame and would rather just hear the originals.
  • I saw it all on UHF
  • "Welcome to Secrets (echos) of (echos) the universe (echos)." Love the movie.
  • To me, this was like when Carrot Top made Chairman of the Board. The movie overly caters to fit around his brand of comedy rather than just being a vehicle for him to branch out into comedic acting. Some of the parody videos within the film feel very shoehorned (such as the money for nothing parody). Also, I know the 80s was kind of a clueless time period so I don't judge it too harshly, but the casual racism of having gong sound effects whenever an Asian character appears on screen just makes the movie not age well.

    Oh brother!
  • Such a good movie, I was thinking about it the other day.
  • UHF and Strange Brew both got a lot of play in my house.
  • UHF is a fun film. I think I've seen it 27 times at least...

I'm a huge Weird Al fan. Al does quite a bit of original material, which always outshines the parodies on his albums. I've seen him in concert on each major tour since the "UHF - Music from the motion picture and other stuff" album came out. He puts on a great show. He's also one of the friendliest, most humble people I've ever had the fortune to meet. I'm presently working on a book proposal for one of his albums and am planning a massive retrospective for my blog in the upcoming months on Al. His song at the end of the Captain Underpants movie is completely original and well done.

I have the movie on VHS, DVD and Blu Ray. The DVD actually has a few features they omitted from the BD release and vice versa. Another great release to check out is the mocumentary, "The Compleat Al," which Shout Factory released around the same time as UHF.

Sorry, I think my inner nerd is showing. If anyone ever wants to talk Al, discuss concerts, rarities, etc, I'm just a PM away.

Also, I bought the new Squeezebox career retrospective box set on vinyl of all his work...

  • Al tends to show up in odd places including the Naked Gun series and doing the theme for Spyhard.
  • I didn't get to see this movie 'til the early 2000's, but I loved it!

"Hey! Hey, I know you! You're the guy that gave me that double dye Denver Mint penny! Thanks a lot, mister! That thing was worth a fortune!"

    Oh brother!

It's okay if you have a different opinion.

  • He was also in the movie "How to be a Latin Lover" earlier this year. Then there was that time he was on a game show in Japan...

It was also released on laserdisc - as were "the compleat al" and a collection of his music videos.

Contributed to the Transformers and Pokemon movies too.

Yes, but bringing out the 'casual racism' is a bit of a stretch.
