Got invited to drop almost $1000 at a concert of a lifetime in California

One of my College buddies at CSU has two (2nd row!) tickets to see a fantastic concert in San Bernidino CA next week. Bands like Tool, Primus, and Clutch will be there. It sounds great. The person he was planning on taking dropped out last second so he invited me. He said that I could pay him back for the ticket once our financial aid refunds come in Fall semester. The ticket is $600 because it is right up there next to the stage. We will also be driving there and back and I'll just be splitting gas bill and paying for my food and buying whatever else I want. No hotel costs as he has a buddy down there who we would stay with. A perfectly fair offer on his part to give me a couple of months to pay back the ticket.

I'm also saving up for a car that I need before the Fall semester and $800-1000 will go a long way. So I turned him down. But then I started thinking that I could sell some of my game collection so I could ge the car and see the concert. But then again my collection *sigh*

Am I crazy to turn this chance down? What would you guys do? I'm a poor college student but I could definitely swing it if I wanted to because of my collection.

  • Yeah, man. Fuck that. Go have fun. Yolo and all that. XD
  • I saw tool and Primus twice earlier this year, absolutely f****** amazing. $600 seems nuts for even for second row comma but then again could be pretty cool depending on who else is there too.
  • You're being wise by turning it down. See these bands at other venues for a fraction of the price instead. Tool is great, but not $600 great. It's all what you value more, and sounds like you value your future more than a single epic night.
  • Also, Tool wears cement shoes. They don't move around a lot, and while it's a great time, their stage presence isn't the best. Would still see them again at $100 or less (I paid $60 for 3rd row center last time I saw them)
  • No concert is worth $600. Even if you were on the damn stage.

idk....if I could see a double bill Zeppelin/Pink Floyd show in their prime in the 70s, front row with a photo op (not even a full on meet and greet, just a posed photo op with each band) and autographs, I'd drop $600 in a heartbeat for that...

As far as modern shows, yes I agree, nothing is worth $600 (yet)
  • If the area by the stage is standing room only, then good luck if you decide to go, but it doesn't sound like you will. Standing room usually has people shoving and pushing etc all to.try to get closer to the stage and have a better view of the band.

Ticketmaster has cheaper seats at a fraction of the cost of the ones he is offering you. I am assuming the 1 ticket for these cheaper seats cover all 6 bands attending, so you would have to look into that if you want to go. You won't break the bank, but you would still be able to see the show and hopefully have a good time.
  • I would never pay $600 to see any concert or sporting event. I could easily afford that, but I'd feel sick spending that much for a concert especially in your case if I had to sell some of my stuff to get the money for it.

Of course you would. And I'd pay $600 to see The Beatles play their rooftop concert, but I think we have to use real world examples in this question.
  • I paid $200 for 4th row and drove from Texas to Florida to see the Lady Gaga Monster Ball Tour one time (Been to 4 of her concerts). It was totally worth it. Even danced with the girl next to me during Bad Romance. If it's a once in a lifetime experience then maybe think about it.
  • $40 a seat is pushing it for any concert. $60 is too much.

I've seen Tool in concert, they are just okay.

Save your money and watch the concert on YouTube.
  • Yup, as fun as it sounds, always gotta prioritize your needs first. Concert opportunities will always come around and amazing ones especially if you're willing to drive a bit. Stash that money for the car...if you're comfortable selling games for the event then perhaps...but that could contribute to a nicer car too  .
  • You will look back some day and wish you went to the concert...go while you can. Sell some games. Memories are more important.
  • 600? hell no, Only if John and George came back from the dead to have a Beatles reunion.
  • If you are selling, be smart about it. Contras, Mario's, earthbound, stuff that isn't going up. Then just buy them again when you have the money
  • Thanks for the input guys. I think it was right to turn it down. $600 is just too much money. I hope he can find somebody else to go with him or he's gonna have spent $1200 on two tickets plus all the gas to drive there and back. (I just don't know if he will find anyone who will dish out that money and that sucks.)

Looks like there Is a swap meet happening next weekend so I can go to that instead. Swap meets are always fun.

    Thanks again.

I was thinking that too which is why I'm having second thoughts. But I can always see tool or primus when they come to Denver for a fraction of the cost.

Yea I get it, then wait and see a cheaper concert.  Point of my post is that if it is between selling a couple games to fund your car and missing out on something you want to do to create a memory, sell the games and go do it.  But maybe in this case the tickets are overpriced and not worth it.

  • I've seen Tool twice live, once I was about 15 rows out, the other I was in the lower bowl. I actually enjoyed the lower bowl better, they don't have super high energy, they play pretty much to the sound of their album, so being second row out won't mean much. Instead of spending $600, you could spend $100 and sit further out. At the end of the day you still get to see them.
  • If it was Iron Maiden or MUSE i would.
  • I like things that are tangible - something I can hold on to and resell if need be. Spending alot of money on vacations and trips feel like a waste of money. My wife is the exact opposite. She doesn't feel a need for stuff and would rather spend disposable income on an experience. Depending on what side of the coin a person would be would probably decide how they would feel about the dilemma...
  • Not a concert kind of guy. If you were going to spend more than $100, you made the right decision in not going.

I was gonna say, go see Iron Maiden + Ghost for a fraction of the price instead

  • Doesn't Maynard have horrible stage fright?

If something like that included passes to meet your favorite band or something that never toured (or if you had the expendable cash) I would say do it, but it sounds like this would put you in a bit of a bind for no real good reason.
  • 600 bucks is way too much even if it included backstage passes. That'll pay for a lot of books for classes or retro gaming stuff.
  • Too much money, also being close to the stage doesn't really mean much, it is all about how it sounds.

I would like to see both Primus and Tool as well but those guys ain't dying anytime soon and I know you'd be able to see them both for 1/4 of that price.

I guess I can't talk too much I bought 2 tickets for King Crimson and 2 tickets for Anderson, Rabin and Wakeman (2nd Yes touring band at the moment).

That was $480CAD but I always buy 2 tickets and just ask someone to come with me, I know there will never be an issue with it.
  • I'm paying $40 to see Social Distortion in July. Yeah, I know, apples and oranges. But still, $600 is way too much.

Use it for loans or books, or games... or hell, that would buy a LOT of corn. Imagine what you could do with all that corn...
  • No interest in seeing Tool live -- love the older stuff, but I hear that Maynard is a complete asshole, and I don't want my memories of experience with that music destroyed by the chance of a shitty stage presence. Happy to watch old live clips online.

As for Primus, they will not disappoint. However, I'd highly recommend seeing them in a smaller, more intimate venue. It's not like Les will stand there and chat with you, but he plays off of smaller crowds really well and seeing him in a smaller venue in Maryland is an experience I'll never forget.

    Save your money.

And it may be even better seeing them in a smaller venue. I wanted to see BTNH for years. I missed three big venue shows for various reasons, the last being the concert was cancelled outright and they refunded our money. Finally got to see them in a very small venue and I was so glad I had missed out the first three times because I wouldn't have gone out of my way to get to that small venue. I dont think seeing them in a big venue would have been half as cool for a number of reasons, even if the seats had been right up front.
  • I have a guy at my work, he has a decent income and his wife has a good job too. He drives a modest car, has below average house but blows A LOT of money on vacations. He is a contractor like me and goes on vacations/mini vacations every month. Stays in very good hotels, eats at expensive places and etc. I looked at his pics sometimes and think may be he is right...screw materialistic stuff, experience is what defines us as people, memories are forever and the older you get the more regretful you become of stuff you didn't try or places you didn't go.
