Super Mario Odyssey Box Art Revealed - Nintendo continues to give Westerner's the "evil eye" treatme

Nintendo appears to have released the box art for the new Mario Odyssey game in the last day or two.  Here it is:

Why does the hat have to have the American-style serious look?  Has there been anything at all in the trailers we've seen that the hat is nothing but fun?  Does the Mario game look like anything but fun and light-hearted in nature?  It just seems out of place to me.

If you aren't aware of what I'm talking about, here are a few more examples:

I updated it with an imgur link.  Should hopefully be working now.

    That worked.

Yeah I dunno why we have to have this disparity with our art. I believe it's largely that the happy Japanese art looks "girly" to many Americans.

What's funny is that this seems to be the PAL box art:

I think this version looks a lot better in matching the "tone" of the game, but perhaps the damsel in distress trope is more tired and looked down on in America than in Europe.

  • The snarkiness is part of the hat character if you watched the trailers. I see no problems here, not to mention Mario looks pretty jolly.
  • Racist!! Only 1 snippet of Mexican Mario covered by the RP rating!! What does that stand for, Racist Propaganda!?!? Someone rally the SJWs! This Nintendo injustice has to stop!!
  • The US often gets the shaft on box art. My avatar is a perfect example of that.

Ah yes, i agree! Episode 1 Pod Racer would have been way better with the Egyptian box art! Fuckin Lucas man..
  • I like it, personally. Only real thing that looks snarky/serious on the box art is the hat, everything else looks really happy and colorful. Someone also pointed out that the American box art resembles the box art on GTA games, which I found really funny once I found that out xD

  • What I don't understand is the black circles/highlights on character eyes in Nintendo games as of late. It's creepy.

Can't you see americans are trying to be edgy? Nintento of Japan thinks so anyways.

  • I've noticed that before but I would rather have the US art for that rachet and clank Japanese art is really creepy
  • I like our box art for once. Yes we got the "tude" look. But looks fine to me.
  • This is giving me an idea on a Photoshop art project. I kinda want to make "de-broodified" boxart by taking the American covers and fixing them up to how they might look in Japan.

    What do y'all think?

Go for it. Can't be nothing but gold

Simple answer, because it makes them look cooler and more appealing to the american audiences as the general audience is different here in the west than in the east. I guess I don't get the big deal, it looks fine to me.

Yeah. The hat forcefully possesses others to turn them into slaves against their will.

For Splatoon it's because they are supposed to be squids, and that's how they've always drawn squids. Remember how they first drew Bloober?

The Euro cover might be a custom one. Did a reverse image search on it and found this:

The typography is off a bit, but otherwise it is nicely done. What gives it away is that there's already a pegi code, the US oval seal (Versus Europe's round one) and the USA code near the barcode.

Haha, thanks. I agree that it does match the tone a bit.

Makes me wonder what the European cover will look like after it's all said and done. I want to guess that it might be similar to the US one, except no "tude"? Maybe? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

    Ah. Good catch!

I don’t know why someone would make that mockup.

Good question. If it's for the art aspect of it, it's pretty subjective since that's the way art is. hahaha

Maybe just for fun of it.

  • Aw, the PAL one is a mockup. Give me all the characters in wedding attire!
  • Not a fan of the angry look on the US cover, but if I don't like the cover art it isn't that big of a deal. I think the only time I really notice it is when I LOVE the cover, like BotW! That one is amazing!

I know that, the Inklings still look unsettling though, in a Japanese shapeshifter monster way.
  • North America likes to feel aggressive, gotta have that menacing box art to be more mantastic. I usually prefer the more colourful jp covers
  • Now I like my JP artwork over US but that Rachet & Clank looks creepy as fuck.
