42% of Americans believe that some benevolent cosmic superman invented people

But more than that, this superman created the limitless vastness of the universe just so we could float around and eat hotdogs and try to get the best financing options available in our respective credit classes.

  • I always thought Jason Lee rated the universe and then inserted himself into it as a human to film Mallrats.

My Name Is Earl was just a bonus.

Haha, right. I see. I was like... "It's James, but there's no turd?

To everyone else and the OP:

Let's not marginalize people because of their beliefs. Sure, you might not agree, but doesn't mean we need to mock them or call them "retards"... *coughs, Gloves. That's not cool, man.

That's part of the reason I stopped watching South Park. It's offensive for no reason other than being offensive.

But yeah, freedom of religion and beliefs is what America was based on, no? So... let's all practise a littler tolerance, shal we?

Now, do I agree with religious groups that push their agenda on others or condemn them for their beliefs or differences? No. That's ridiculous. That's not cool either.

But it's just as bad to be an athiest and do the same thing to others who don't believe the same thing you do.

100% agree with you. I'm an Atheist and live in the Bible Belt, talk about hate. People only want freedom of their own religious beliefs. I also love how around here different branches of Christians condemn the others, but that's a whole new topic.

Just think of how fun things are in the Islamic countries.   Religious freedom in most of them isn't even a concept.

    No doubt, no doubt.

I'm all for religious freedom, just don't push it on others, or condemn others for not agreeing.

I'm happy to live in a country that's (mostly) tolerant. Still some fucked up shit here, but people are (mostly) allowed to practise, or not practise, whatever religion (or non religion) they choose.

Exactly.   Plus if the numbers are correct, the OP is potentially marginalizing 42% of NA.

The other side of the coin is that we could argue that atheists are all idiots based on Pascal's Wager alone.

So let's be more tolerant all around, yes?   I have plenty of atheist friends and plenty of Christian ones (and I think a few Muslim ones?) and the only ones I'm not friends with are the pushy ones, no matter what their stance is.  I don't push my belief set on anyone, I expect the same courtesy.

I always thought that wager argument was Spinoza not Pascal.

I was trying to be funny not pushy. If you notice I didn't offer supporting arguments regarding my atheism.

Regarding the statistic, if you take into account Americans who believe that evolution was started and guided by God, then the number of creationists increases still.

True atheists account for ~20% of Americans

Could be.  I haven't checked the numbers because much like politics and sexuality, I really don't care.

And I'm just making sure this doesn't turn into a bash thread.   Your OP is light hearted enough, but some of the replies by others not so much.

Nah, Pascal's Wager is garbage because it's only referring to one specific Abrahamic god. Other gods do exist in theory.
