What/Whose Patreons Are You Subscribed To?

I've been a patreon subscriber of NA since it was set up. I do watch a few youtube channels that have patreons but currently NA is the only one I give money to. I've watched LGR for years, but he is pulling in close to 5k a month on patreon alone, so I don't think he's hurting for my money. But someone like Lon.tv (tech review and such) has a much more modest $650 a month with much smaller donation tiers ($1, $5 levels)  and was thinking about donating. So which content creators do you support with money, and how do you decide if they are worthy?

Comments

  • None.

I will donate to the server/donation drive on NA when it happens though.
  • Just NA.

But I have thought about the gaming historian, love his stuff
  • Just NA, ever since I joined.
  • NA is the only one
  • Just NA. I do donate monthly to a podcast network I really enjoy though (Maximum Fun).
  • What is Patreon anyway?  Is that what the subscriber bar on people's icons means?
  • I backed a few on there but one has gone back to kickstarter so i just go with that whenever he has something up.

Yeah just a way to donate monthly, usually to someone who creates content like a YouTuber or podcaster. Also works well for supporting NA's upkeep costs.

And yeah, subscriber banners mean people are subscribed to the Patreon.

Oh, that's nice...I'll look into that, thank you.

  • I may be looking at it the wrong way, but it turns me off when I see people who don't have jobs try to get people to pay them every month so they can live a certain lifestyle. For things like website hosting I can see its purpose, but there's no way I'm giving money to little Billy so he can continue to do art every month while he sits around and plays video games.
  • Inrangetv and forgotten weapons. Pretty much the best gun YouTube channels online in my opinion.
  • Only NA. I enjoy this community/site very much and I gladly chip in what I can.
  • Nintendo Force magazine. Keeping the tradition of Nintendo Power alive!

I feel the same way. One of the reasons why I can't start one personally. I feel it as a form of e-begging in some instances, but that's not to say if utilized properly it can be used to help a creator out-- but it's just not for me.

My main excuse is that I'm too poor to support others that I want to support. And no, I won't get a patreon to help support a patreon. lol But I do find ways to help out when I can, like when I do a sale or an auction, I try to give a % as a donation to the site.

If you give me money every month, I will stream all of your games that I play!
  • Just NA figure its a small way to give back after getting all the deals and help over the years.
  • I absolutely hate monthly recurring bills, I don't even do Netflix at $10 a month. So Patreon is not for me.

Having said that, I'm glad to do donations here and there in times of need. Server fund, friends who need it, etc. I just don't want a monthly recurring commitment.
  • I think as long as the request is done in a tactful manner and not demanding, a Patreon is a great way for people to support, if they so choose. And that's the great thing about it - it is typically completely optional. Something I've noticed over the years is that people are quite entitled when it comes to content, especially over the internet. There is an expectation that everything should be free and that we have certain rights - on forums, social media, with content, etc. There is so much content out there - take a podcast for example. Even if it's something the creator enjoys, a good podcast takes a lot of dedication, time and effort, both outside of the podcasts and during. Yet there is this expectation and entitlement out there that is frustrating. Here it has been fine, but I've seen people react super negatively to the thought of a content creator offering a Patreon, which I find quite odd.

Every place I've ever seen it offered (that I personally frequent), it has been 100% optional and has been handled very tactfully. It doesn't matter to me what a developer or content creator does in their free time or how much money they have and what their resources are -- if they are doing something for a community, I think it's completely reasonable and appropriate for them to ask for support.
  • Just NA, I don't even notice the money so it's all good.
  • Whats a patreon? I guess i need to subscribe to NA's but im a cheap bitch! That goes for anyone else who hasnt either. Whats wrong with you? Its Nintnendo Age! Not Sega Age.. alright i went to far but Sega reference b4 i dip!
  • I put 100% of my mod paycheque into NA's Patreon

haha right on. This is exactly it for me. I am dumbfounded by these people who get shit given to them and then ask for money on top of it for talking about or playing games given to them. Honestly, I think Twitch is even worse. How people can drop hundreds of dollars to watch someone play a game it ridiculous to me. But to each their own. Not my money. AGDQ or stuff like that I get as it's for a good cause.

My answer is zero. Although I have donated to NA on several occasions since it actually serves a purpose.

  • I just signed up, never realized that my payment never went through. I just thought someone forgot to add my subscriber thing.

But I give no money to anything else because I don't like anything else.
